eVER WONDER WHY CHERRY IS THE MOST USED FLAVOR OF COUGH SYRUPS???
That's easy..The bark of the cherry tree is one of the best known cures for a cough and cold! There are a lot of old time remedies that are oh so simple to make and use.Many years ago the medical field convinced us all that these remedies were no good,obsoulete,and we bought in.Making the pharmacutical companies very rich.While at the same time ,filling our bodies withsometimes,very lethal,meds.All the side effects and scares.Most of the home cures have none of these.
It is up to each person to decide if natural healing is for you and your family.But if i can use natural meds for my family and me,sounds good and safe..Iwas raised with cures and poultices that my grandma made.I have used these on my family from time to time.For me this is a good option.
Try some for your self..if it helps,well,,the choice is your's.Use them,learn more,or run down to the local pharmacy and give them your money..But what if that drug co. is closed due too...let's say ..a hurricane,torando destroyed it,flooding,any type of disaster..or maybe you just can't get a ride.This will not stop you from being sick,or maybe a loved one,maybe your child..It is not a bad idea to get some knowledge about some of these before you need them.
As with anything else i must say''try these recipes at your own risk,not responsible for accidents,etc.''////
I do use these and trying to learn more and more.They do work for me and millions of others.Just do you a quick Google search for,old fashioned remedies.you will find many many more...And if you have a tried and true cure,please let me know....
god bless and merry christmas everyone.

| Respiratory Infection Blend |
- Tea tree ............. 8 drops
- Lavender ............. 5 drops
- Ravensara .............1 drop
- Niaouli ...............1 drop
- Carrier Oil .......... 1 ounce
Massage over infected area ( chest, throat, or sinus) 3 times a day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A FEW OF MINE!
my grandma used to use snuff. so any time one of us kids were bitten by a bee,wasp,hornet stc,she'd tale a little of her snuff from her mouth(yep) .had to be wet. and smear it on the sting.in no time it felt better.I have found it also works with wet tobacco.break a peice of your cigerette off,or tobacco,wet it quickly and place on sting.it will quickly reduce swelling.now for a warning,,,for a moment after placing this ,it stings bad,but very quickly subsides.It is drawing the poision out.
~~~~~~~AND ANOTHER....
Vicks Vapor Rub: Taken internally for sore throat and cough. Applied externally if "your chest sounds a little tight". Applied under the nose for sniffles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~AND ANOTHER
For chest colds, etc. fry up a pan of onions which and place the fried onions in an old pillowcase,CLEAN CLOTH,ETC. folding the excess around the onions to make a poultice for the chest or back! IT WARMS YOU UP IMMEDIATLY.it will cause you to begin sweating,but will break a fever and congetion.BE very careful with this so you will not burn the person you are trying to help.i have used this over and over..from adults to children.it works.i have seen my hubby so congested he could hardly breathe and this worked in leass than an hour.ALSO have done on kids and grands.they will begin coughing up the fleme from their chest.
JUST A QUICK NOTE,DONT WAIT TOO LONG TO TRY THIS OR YOU WILL DEVELOP PHNUMONIA..THIS COULD KILL YOU.SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATLY IF YOU SUSPECT THIS,...
this one works as well----c take a meduim onion and put a little over a cup of water and sugar cook until the onion until soft and drink as hot as you can stand it and go to bed you may get sick but that is the congestion coming out !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~and another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hot whiskey with lots of lemon (yea some of you like this one huh?)-cut a lemon and squeeze in cup.heat up 1/2 cup whiskey ,keeping warm enough you can sip without burning you.this will sometimes make you drowsy.I have found it best to be relaxed and settle back while sipping this.recommended for adults only. it also works like this....
rock candy (crystallized sugar)(like peppermint etc.) dissolved in rye whiskey! great for sore throat or coughs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~and another
get a boiler that you will not use for anything else,get a couple spoonfuls of vicks salve and place in it .fill boiler half full on medium heat.As the water heats up the house will fill with the smell of vicks! this is great for all ages when you do not have a humidifier!can do as often as necc.
~~~~~~~~~~and another
sometimes this will help with colic...in a baby!if your baby has colic just get into a hot bath with the baby. Both of you will relax and the colic will quickly disappear... this will work if your little one just has temp. case of colic...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~another
find an orange tree, pick some leaves off of it, wash them, make a tea of them by boiling them in water which also sterilizes the tea, and add a little sugar or Karo syrup to taste, and give it to the baby. It is all natural so it won't hurt baby..THIS IS GREAT FOR GAS PAINS IN BABY!
MAKE SURE THE TREE HAS NOT BEEN SPRAYED!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ANOTHER~~~~~~~~~~
If you feel a pimple coming up, rub in a little toothpaste and it practically disappears overnight.
ANOTHER~~~~~~~~~~~~
Castor oil-- YUKKY BUT WORKS!
Take 1/2 tsp. full //works well on constipation...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~another
2 tablespoons of Epsom Salts to a glass of water for constipation. btw-- it is still listed on the box as a relief for constipation.
~~~~~~~~and another!!!!
Castoria; A dark, herbal remedy thatreally does not taste bad. good for coughs ,feeling under the weather.i can't really remember what all it was good for! lol..you can usually still find this at the drug store///
~~~~~~~~and another!!!!!
Pine Tar: Puncture and/or severe wounds were dressed with pine tar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~more!!!!
i use kerosene to pour on and clean cuts and punctures to prevent lockjaw, and prevent infection.i have stepped on a long nail,pulled it out and it was rusty as well.poured kerosene over it and an hour later i forgot i had done it! this works very well..if you have no kerosene,you can also use paint thinner!
and don't forget LYSOL!!!this stuff works well...clean scratches,small cuts etc. with it!
for burns i use aloe vera plant! this is great and can be used safely on all ages!!!!!!
from here on down are recipes and ideas i found online...i hope you enjoy learning all these ! and yes ,,i really use these!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
here is a remedy for colic i found online...the ingrediants are simple,not harmful and if this works for you ,great! it certainly would be worth a try if you have been up at night for weeks with a sick,colicky baby!
take a quart size jar and put 6 ounces of eagle brand milk and 3 ounces of karo syrup in the jar then fill the rest of the jar with boiling water and stir it up real good. give a 2 ounce bottle around noon then another around 6 o clock that night, It is very sweet but babies like it and it does stop colic.
another i found online for colic---..
Pure Olive Oil works great for babies with colic. Give them a teaspoon full, and in 15-20 minutes, they are quiet. It not only coats the stomach, but it helps when they use the rest room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | ..>
Camphor is a strong remedy,and very inexpensive,but should be used wisely, and Only When Needed. In any condition where there is coldness of the body, a common cold, a cold stomach, influenza - THIS indicates the use of camphor. The oil is a very useful ingredient in inhalations for coughs, colds and difficulties in breathing. Applied externally camphor numbs the peripheral nerve endings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Horehound Candy is used to help stop cough when you have Croup, it helps sooth the throat so you dont cough so much.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Catnip relieves colds and fevers by inducting perspiration and helps the body to regain it's balance by its calming effect. Catnip tea is good for curing headaches.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lavender oil is an effective antiseptic. A lavender massage on the chest and lymph nodes is relaxing and helps kill germs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WILLOW BARK
To relieve arthritic, back, and muscle aches and pains, a suggested dosage is 225 mg of white willow bark four times daily. It is hard to judge the amount of salicin in the bark, a bark tea can normally be taken 3 to 4 times daily, tincture doses start a 2 ml three times daily.

The Asthma Remedy
Asthma is a serious (if not frightening) disorder in which the airway becomes inflamed, resulting in wheezing, loss of breath, and tightness in the chest. About 15 million people in the U.S. suffer with asthma and there are more than half a million hospitalizations resulting from this disorder.
The prevalence of asthma has been increasing for every age group affected. Children have the highest increase; over the last ten years the rate of asthma in children has increased by over 90%. Parents with asthmatic children will know that the quickest remedy for an asthma attack comes from medication, but there are times when a child's inhaler is not available.
There are two natural ways to treat an asthma attack which relate to the soothing effect that warm liquid has on bronchial tubes. First, try some hot soup which can soothe the bonchials. However, the second remedy can be more effective since it includes a warm liquid with an additional ingredient: caffeine. Coffee or tea, with caffeine, can open airways similar to the way inhalers do, so try this during an asthma episode if no medication is available.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Head Lice Cure
Mom and dad, if you're tired of "nit picking," then pay attention. About ten million people in America are afflicted with head lice and their eggs, or "nits." The head louse lives in human hair fairly close to the scalp where it feeds on human blood. Female lice lay about 10 eggs per day and the babies, or nits, hang-on to strands of hair with amazing tenacity.
Getting rid of head lice is a three-step process. You must kill all the live lice, check for and remove all the nits by combing and manual nit picking, and you must do a thorough job of cleaning the infested person's belongings and home environment.
Doctor Lawrence Schachner of the University of Miami School of Medicine has found what he believes is the best, fastest natural remedy for head lice yet: petroleum jelly. This cure works not by poisoning the lice (like the prescription drugs available), but by smothering them.
Dr. Schachner recommends slathering petroleum jelly on your child's scalp and hair in the evening before bed. Then put a shower cap on the child and let him sleep the night with the cap on. By morning, the lice and knits are smothered. The down side? Children must do repeated shampoos to remove the petroleum jelly, so their hair may look oily for a while.
Happy Saturday everyone!We celebrated Thanksgiving today so the whole family could be together..all was there but 1 i am afraid..don't have a clue why rita couldn't come..
but we had a great time as well as cody and cierra were able to be there and john as well ..we were happy to include there would be 3 new ones with us next year God willing...
ok...on to my blog...i am a firm believer in being able to take care of yourself in most any time and trouble.it just takes a little know how and preparation(when u know it's coming). All it takes to look at tv a few times a week and listen to the news to know that something really bad is fixing to happen to us in this land we call the u.s.a...OK...now i know i just lost a few...BUT ..what if i ,as well as many,many more are right????????? are you prepared ? could you take care of your family for a while??? what if electricity were gone tomorrow?can you keep your family ,or yourself for that matter,warm? would you have any food to eat?do you have a ''safe place'' to go too?would you have food for the babies,kids,elderly????if the answer to any of these are NO,then you may want to think about it anyway....BECAUSE, my friend ,when it happens,if it does,it will be too late to try and do something safe...
The economical future is not looking good at all...ANY OF IT! gas prices rising daily(and no hurricane to blame it on this year),housing market has all but stopped,very little building going on....people are having to offer incentives(freebies) to potential home buyers..GUYS this is not good..you know i'd like to think that all is good in the ole usa,but it isnt..will we fall into a depression like stage? don't know...will we be attacked by our enemies?don't know....all the above..dont know...but i do know that something is about to happen before this is getting better.a lot of people are preparing for a really bad situation..really bad...there are survival retreats going up all over in secluded areas...stock piling food..guys this is scary..and if this happens there are a lot of people who are going to be homeless and foodless very quickly..can you imagine how fast looters will be out? can you imagine how quickly nice people will turn when their family is starving????
I have hopes that it will not last long,and i hope it is in spring,,at least people can stay warm and find something to eat if you are near rural areas...these areas will be saturated with people trying to do just that...Are you prepared to be able to help anyone???even yourself????i plan to be....and i hope you can too,
on that note,,over the years i have tried to be frugal and live off the land when ever possible.i do live in a rural area where i grew up..i enjoy the wild fruits and berries in spring ,summer and fall..i enjoy gardening and making them last as long as possible.i enjoy hunting,as a food source,not sport.i have raised livestock for pets and food...i enjoy canned goods,homemade jellies and the like and we have a fireplace that is our main heat supply.in times of hurricanes and ice storms in past it has also been used to cook and light by....
i have also learned how to make a solar oven(sooo easy ,) and working on a hot water heater..;) hey if you can save ,,,,SAVE!!!! i also like going green as much a possible helping our inviroment....i will add some of the things that are available online for you ,and then do your own search....would love to have your imput and thoughts on the usa in the near future...AND please dont write and call names...i assure you i am not crazy....lol...nor do i let this bother me all the time..i trust god...so i know he will help me...BUT god also gave me a brain to use as well...and i do try that as much as possible...be prepared folks,,and then if nothing happens...GREAT! call it a good experiance and go camping and impress your friends...;) ....BUT IF IT DOES.....AT LEAST YOU ARE NOT CAUGHT OFFGUARD....
BELOW I WILL ADD SOME OF THE TEXT AND YOU CAN GO AND READ MORE IF INTERESTED,thanks to all i borrowed from....
Pine needles can be easily brewed into tea which contains many nutrients and vitamins. Pine cones can be roasted over a fire (you did start a fire already, right?) to open the cone and access the seeds inside. In a longer term situation…those same seeds can also be ground into a type of course flour. One can also east the inner bark of Pine trees if nothing else is available. And that's just the common Pine tree, which grows almost everywhere! Speaking of Tree bark: remember that Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) was originally derived from teas made from the inner bark of the Willow tree. Anyway, you get the point. A little study on the matter can go a long way toward making you self sufficient as far as food is concerned, by enabling you to supplement your dry-stores (you do have food stores, right?) with fresh greens providing vitamins and nutrients year round.
, there are many Americans today who have the means to protect themselves, and yet constantly look to someone or something else to"take care of them". WE MUST TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO PROTECT OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES! ORGANIC STORABLE FOOD IS A VITAL PART OF THAT PROTECTION! The recent series of Hurricanes, Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Floods, and Volcanic Eruptions ARE NATURE'S WAKE UP CALLS! Our Food Supply is being increasingly contaminated.The Government recently warned pregnant women to eat fish sparingly because of the high risk to the unborn of mercury poisoning! Mad Cow Disease is not only a concern in beef. There are reports that Prions have been found in non organic fertilizer which contains bone meal from slaughtered cattle! In addition, we are, at this time in the worst DEBT BUBBLE in our Nation's history. There have been only two massive DEBT BUBBLES in the last 100 years in the U.S.A. The first DEBT BUBBLE is better known as THE GREAT DEPRESSION. The second DEBT BUBBLE is TODAY! The first DEBT BUBBLE resulted in massive Economic Dislocations, Loss of Property, and DISRUPTION OF THE FOOD SUPPLY WITH BREAD LINES AND FOOD SHORTAGES! In many ways, the fundamental ECONOMIC NUMBERS are worse now than they were then! For more information on the current DEBT BUBBLE, call Whitehurst international at 1-888-892-6238. Many people are not yet fully aware of how closely linked the price and supply of FOOD is to the price and supply of OIL. As the price of OIL soars, everything from growing FOOD to transporting FOOD is being affected. The consequences are alarming! Linda Runyon welcomes you to her site! Its purpose is to help you begin to seek your own free life, should you wish to do so. Bear in mind, however, that the process of living and eating free (and deliciously!) does not happen overnight. Linda found this out after years of existence in the Adirondack wilderness.
It would be after a time of struggle and hardship, and experimenting with tastes, textures and plant availability, that Linda would become an accomplished and expert preparer of savory edible wild foods, such as tasty malva wraps, crabgrass muffins or pine needle tea.
Her story as an environmentarian (one who eats from the environment) begins when, as a child of the Adirondack wilderness, Linda discovered that wild clover, yarrow, and wintergreen were really good to eat! As she grew, so grew her knowledge of the abundant wild flora in her beloved mountains.
I have just signed a national petition opposing the U.N. "Law of the Sea" treaty that if ratified by the Senate would threaten our nation's sovereignty. Additionally, it places the United States under an international authority, subjects our nation to direct taxation by the United Nations and could hamper our military. A vote to ratify the treaty is expected before the end of the month. This is a crucial issue that truly needs your immediate attention. Mod Mum is the maker of this beautiful sling that I am wearing in the photo to your right. It is a reversible sling with blue and brown dots on one side and solid brown on the other. If you are wearing different outfits or you having a festive mood one day, then this is the sling to choose. Slings are great babywearing tools because they are simple to put on, secure, and reasonably priced.
If you have never worn baby before, or if you are pregnant thinking about becoming a babywearing Mama, then you definitely need to have a classic reversible sling in your collection. I keep a sling in the car, the diaper bag, and by the computer in my home. Whenever the bean becomes fuzzy it is so easy to just pop him into the sling and keep on working. Babies love the closeness they feel while being worn. Slings are great for infants because they can lay close to your heartbeat as well as provide easy access to nursing for the mothers.
Now onto the good part. Mod Mum would like to giveaway a sling of your choice to one lucky reader of the Domestic Diva.
Here is how to enter to win your very own Mod Mum sling:
1. Place this button in your sidebar so others can enter the contest as well.
happy friday!
RICOTTA CHEESE
1 and a Half gallon pan 1 gallon whole milk 1/4 cup of vinegar Fine cotton cloth (or clean pillow case) colandar Directions: The easiest cheese fo all to make is a ricotta. Take one gallon of whole milk and heat to 200 degrees F. If you don't have the thermometer, just wait until the first few bubbles that indicate boiling (212F) is starting. The stir in 1/4 cup of vinegar. Stir briskly to mix and then remove from heat. Cover and let sit 15 minutes or so. A thick curd should have risen from the milk. It will float to the top. Line a colander with a piece of well washed old sheeting or other fine cotton yard goods. Pour the "ricotta in process" into the colander saving the whey --the clearish left over liquid. If the whey is still cloudy return it to the cook pot and add another 1/4 cup of vinegar. Heat to 200 degrees and wait for more curd to form. Let site 15 minute covered and pour this into the colander.
Use in any recipe that calls for ricotta or cottage cheese.
Soap Making... The Way We Used To Do It
This page reflects one axiom of the true pioneer spirit found in an active little lady who intimately knew those times: use everything and don't throw anything away. Anything can be used for something.
The following information and recipes are told by Mabel Mertz (born 1912).
this story borrowed from http://waltonfeed.com/old/soap/soapold.html
http://waltonfeed.com/
email them @ mark@waltonfeed.com ..
Basic Instructions
As we had no money to buy fat with when I was a girl, we made our own by rendering it when we killed an animal. We cut off the fat, cleaned it up, then cut it up finely with a knife. Then we put it in our big pots and cooked it until all that remained was the cracklings floating in the boiling fat. We drained off as much fat as we could, poured it into pails, and stored it in the root cellar. We used this to make pies, and to cook with. We put the cracklings away for another day when we would make soap out of them. The cracklings still had a lot of fat in them. In fact, the main reason we cooked the soap was to dissolve, or disintegrate the cracklings into the soap. On the day we made soap, we took the cracklings and put them in our big copper kettle. As they were heating on the stove, we added our lye, sprinkling the crystals on top of the cracklings. Then we added the water and started stirring it. We boiled this mixture until the cracklings disappeared. If there was any little pieces of meat in the cracklings they wouldn't dissolve and we had to take them out with a wooden spoon, or lift them out on the end of our stirring stick. We continued to stir and boil it, checking it every 20 minutes or so to see if it was done. We did this by taking a spoon full out and pouring it on a plate. We knew it was done when it hardened to the consistency of soft cream cheese after it cooled. Sometimes there was streaks of water running through it. If this happened we knew it needed more water. We poured more water in, boiled it some more, then tried it again. If it ran off the stirring stick like water, we knew it had too much lye and needed more water. We knew it was right when it left a creamy layer on the stick. We didn't have any recipes in the early days when I first learned how to make soap. After a bit of the mixture had cooled, I put it on the end of my tongue. If it's bite was just right I knew I had the lye/fat ratio correct. When the soap had finished cooking, we poured it out of the kettle, sometimes as much as 4 inches deep into a small galvanized tub. The soap didn't set up really hard immediately. I waited until the next morning to tip the tub upside down, knock the soap out of it, and cut it up into bar sized pieces. Then I sat the bars outside on a board to continue drying. It wasn't too many days before it was ready to use. To store it, we threw it into a box. Sometimes we wasn't get to the soap making right away and the cracklings went rancid. This wasn't matter, however, as during the soap making process the lye cleaned them right up, and the soap that came from them was just as nice smelling as if we had used fresh cracklings. Home made soap makes great pre-wash. Get the clothes damp and rub the soap bar on the bad spots. It works as well as the expensive stuff from the store. I've seen dozens of soap making recipes. But let me tell you, as an old soap making expert, I haven't seen any better soap made than the soap haven't manufactured with the three simple ingredients: fat, lye, and water.
Never Fail Soap
- 5 lbs cracklings
- 1 gal soft water
- 1 can lye (1 lb.) (This recipe lye heavy. Use 10.6 oz. lye)
See the above information to see how long to boil it. Remove from heat and stir until thick. Perfume it if you like and pour it into molds if you prefer, in the wash tub it does a good job of cleaning soiled clothes.
Home Made Soap
- 9 lbs fat
- 1/4 lb. borax (optional)
- 1/4 lb. rosin (this makes the soap softer, but again optional)
- 2 small cans Gillette Lye (This recipe lye heavy. Use 19 oz. lye)
- 5 Quarts water
Boil together for 2 or 2 1/2 hours
Set for three days, then put in tight wood box lined with newspapers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic Hand Soap
- 1/2 oz or 14gm lye
- 1/4 cup cold water
- 1/2 cup lukewarm fat
- 1 T. lemon juice (optional)
In a plastic container, gently stir lye into cold water with wooden spoon. Slowly add lukewarm fat. Continue to stir until slightly thickened. Add lemon juice, stirring to mix thoroughly. Pour mixture into plastic molds. Cover with plastic wrap and leave for 24 hours. Remove soap from molds and allow to air-dry for 14 days. Yield: 1 - 2 medium bars.
Basic Perfumed Hand Soap (This recipe makes nice soap)
- 5 cups rain or soft water
- 1/2 cup powdered borax
- 11.6 oz. lye
- 11 cups fat (lye calculated for lard. See lye to fat table.)
Add at trace...
- 1 oz. strawberry dye
- 2 oz. lanolin
- 3 oz. glycerin
- 3 T finely ground oatmeal
- 4 tsp. aromatic Rose Geranium
Follow basic directions.
Soap from Home made Fat Drippings
- 3 quarts fat drippings
- 12.7 oz. lye
- 4 1/2 quarts cold rain or soft water
- 3 tsp. borax
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 T. sugar
- 1/4 cup ammonia
Thoroughly clean fats by boiling in equal amount of water. Place kettle in a cold place to firm fat. Cut fat from kettle sides. Pour off water and waste. Scrape off excess wastes from bottom of lard cake. Clean kettle and replace lard cakes, melt over low heat. Dissolve lye in 1 quart cold water and let stand until cool, then add melted fat slowly. Stir constantly. Mix other ingredients together and add to first mixture. Stir until the mixture is thick and honey colored. Pour into pan lined with a clean white cloth. Before soap becomes hard, mark pieces into cakes or form into balls. When hard, store to allow further air-drying.
Basic Granulated Laundry Soap
- 2 1/2 quarts rain water
- 2 quarts grease, strained, melted and hot
- 1 can lye (probably 1 lb.)
- 3 T borax
Mix water, borax, and lye. Add strained grease slowly. Remove from heat and leave in pot. Stir often during the first day. Allow two weeks to cure, stirring occasionally.
Laundry Soap: Recipe II
- 5 lbs. grease
- 1/2 cup ammonia
- 1 oz. sassafras oil
- 3 quarts rain water
- 1/2 cup borax
- 1 can lye (probably 1 lb.)
- 1/2 cup coal oil
Melt lye in cold water. Dissolve borax and add lye to mixture. Melt grease and add ammonia, then coal oil. Add to lye mixture. Stir until mixture congeals then put into milk cartons or leave in enamel pan. Cut into bars 24-48 hours later.
Basic Shampoo
- 1 bar basic soap
- 4 quarts rain water
- 2 slightly beaten eggs
- 1 tsp. powdered borax
- 1 oz. bay rum
Dissolve soap in boiling water. Let cool. Add eggs, borax and bay rum. Stir to mix thoroughly
Oatmeal Cream Almond Bath Salt Recipe
You can increase the salts along with the ingredients by doubling or tripling all of the ingredients for when you want to make bath salts as gifts or when you are stocking up on your favorites.
This recipe is meant to make enough bath salts for three baths, using 1/2 cup of bath salts in each tub of water. If you like to have your tub filled to almost the brim, you might like to use a little more salt in your tub of hot water to get the same bath salt sensations.
- 1 cup of large sea salts
- 1/2 cup white fine sea salt
- 1/2 tablespoon of sweet almond oil
- Add 5 drops of your favorite essential oils.
Mix well until there are no clumps in the mixture.
- Add one cup of powdered milk to the bath salt mixture and repeat the mixing motion.
- Add 1/2 cup of uncooked, unsweetened whole oats.
Repeat the mixing motion.
Mix the bath salts well, using a plastic or wood spoon. Avoid using metal if you can.
Option: Add three drops of your favorite coloring to the bath salt mixture. Mix the coloring through the salt mixture.
Relax and Enjoy! | ..>
Before the Europeans arrived in North America, many indigenous tribes revered the coyote for its intelligence and mischievous nature. But European settlers considered coyotes "pests," a view that unfortunately lingers today. The coyote remains one of the most persecuted and misunderstood animals in the United States. This brochure discusses the problems with lethal "control"; describes types of coyote encounters; how to keep coyotes at a distance; how to keep your companion animals safe; and how to safeguard other animals.
Essential oils can be added to any of these if you like.
Bath salts 1 cup epsom salts 1 cup sea salt (look in salt section of your grocery store. I buy mine at Walmart Supercenter for 1.24) 1/2 cup baking soda (If you can't find sea salt then use 1 1/2 cups baking soda) Add 1/2 cup to running bath water.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Milk bath 1/2 cup powdered buttermilk 1/2 cup powdered milk (If you don't have the buttermilk use 1 cup) 1 TB cornstarch Use 1/2 cup in running bath water. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Special milk bath 1 1/2 cups sea salt 1 cup epsom salts 1 cup powdered milk Use 1/2 cup. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For a nighttime facial cream 1/2 cup olive oil (cheap kind works great) 1/4 apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup water. Mix in a bottle. May have to shake before each use. I reused a plastic corn syrup bottle, tied a ribbon around it, and it looks really nice. Just put small amount in hand or on cotton ball. Apply like any moisturizer. Your skin will glow in the morning!
Olive oil can be used to remove makeup, for sore cracked nipples due to breastfeeding (will not hurt babe), on your belly for stretch marks, or to shave with.
Use a small amount of baking soda, ground oatmeal, or cornmeal mixed with cleanser or olive oil for a scrubbing treatment for face or body.
Use small amount honey or yogurt for soothing facial treatment.
Orange Salt Scrub 2/3 cup fine sea salt 1/3 cup olive oil 1/3 cup liquid bath soap (I have used baby shampoo and ivory dishwashing liquid) 1 TBS orange zest 1 tsp orange essential oil (could use lemon zest and oil instead) Mix in jar with lid. Scoop out amount and use on body or feet. Best used in shower, but BE CAREFUL shower will be slick! Do not use on face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buttermilk Bath
This gentle bath will leave your skin soft and silky. Buttermilk is high in fat and lactic acid, and both help soften and hydrate skin. Make an extra portion of this because people of all ages can benefit from this rich, relaxing natural bath. You may want to package this in a decorative glass jar or a cellophane envelope to give as gifts to friends.
- 1/4 cup dry buttermilk (or dry milk)
- 1/4 cup Nonfat Dry Milk
- 1 Tbsp. Cornstarch
- 1/8 tsp. essential oil of your choice, depending on your mood. (lavender is relaxing)
Mix together all the ingredients with a wire whisk and pour into a airtight jar or re-sealable plastic bag.
Directions for use: Pour 1/4 of the buttermilk bath powder in tub as you add hot water .
(makes 1/2 cup, enough for 2 baths)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do It Yourself Bath Salts
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 1 cup Sea salt
- 1/2 cup Baking soda
- Fragrance optional, 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. essential or Fragrance Oils as desired
Combine all ingredients with wire wisk. If your salt is a large crystal type, grind your salt first in a food processor until it is finely grained.
Store in a large zip-lock bag
Directions for use: Use about 1/3 cup per bath
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cleansing Body Polish
- 1/2 cup fine sea salt
- 1/4 cup Jojoba Oil or other body oils(olive oil works fine)
- 1/4 cup handcrafted soap( finely grated)
- 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. essential or Fragrance Oil
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix thoroughly. store in a small plastic jar that you can keep in the shower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vinegar Hair Rinse
- 1/2 tsp. of vinegar
- 1 cup of water
After shampooing, apply the vinegar rinse. You may rinse it all out if you want, or leave the rinse on your hair. Leaving the vinegar rinse on your hair will help to prevent tangles. Vinegar helps to restore your pH balance and helps prevent an itchy scalp. Once your hair dries it will not smell like vinegar. Most people like to use the vinegar rinse 1 to 2 times a week. You can experiment adding infused herbs, a few drops of honey or essential oils to your vinegar rinse.

I make the Gelatin. 1 tsp. unflavoured gelatin (Knox), 1 tbsp. Aloe Vera Gel (Lilly of the Desert), 1 cup of boiled water. Mix well and put in a spray bottle. Store in the Fridge. To use run under hot water. Style hair and spray on gelatin spray. To finish spray with sugar water. 1 tsbp. of sugar, 1/4 cup of hot water. Stir well and the add Aloe Vera Gel (Lilly of the Desert) so it makes a 1/3 cup of mixture. Will hold style very well and is very good conditioner for the hair. I have had breast cancer and my scalp is very sensitive. I have no problems with this. Holds through dampness, rain and wind.

 | ..>..> ingreidients2 lemons(yellow) 2 limes(green) 1 orange 3 tablespoons of sugar 1 tablespoon of elmers glue 1 cup of 70% rubbing alcohol 3 cups of water 1/2 a tablespoon of castor oil take as much juice out of all three fruits and drain as much possible. Take rubbing alcohol and glue and mix well.Bring to a boil. Once boiling add water and sugar and stir until very well mixed. Bring to boil again because most likely water will stop boiling once you pour in water and sugar.After brought to a boil let cool to a lukewarm temperature and pour in castor oil. This mix will definitely keep your hair very shiny. I use it on my daughter's hair veryday and always have and we do not use any other products becasue i think that they damage the hair. This will make your hair less likely to develop split ends which is great and will keep the hair form becoming dry. Hair will not become oily, i promise, so dont worry about the castor oil. The alcohol is also good for the hair because it helps keep the emolients form the lemon,lime, and orange in. If sprayed sparingly will dry in about 10 mins and will have good hold with out over harding,. If saturated into hair this can be used as a type of gel-spray to style hair and then can be hairdryed to water style you need. Hope yall enjoy it. Please leave comments. Your welcome. -Marylou

Bath Salt:
You will need:
- 1/2 cup rock salt
- Skin safe essential oils
- Funnel
Combine rock salt with ten drops of essential oil. Use funnel to pour salt mixture into bottle; cork bottle tightly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fragrant Bath Tea Bags:
For tea bags, you will need:
- chamomile blossoms
- 1/4" wide flat gold trim
- 1/2" squares of gold tulle and sheer organza
- Dried mint leaves for invigorating bath tea or dried lavender for soothing bath tea
Using equal parts, mix chamomile blossoms with mint leaves or lavender. For each tea bag, center one square of organza over one square of tulle. Place 1/4 cup of desired tea mixture in center of squares. Gather edges of squares around tea. Wrap an 8" length of trim several times around gathers. Know ends to secure. To use: Place one bag in bathtub under warm running water
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scented Bath Salts Make your own bath salts in your favorite scents. Use plain rock salt and add a few drops of essential oil. Lavender and rose work really well. Bottle the salts up in pretty jars or other containers for unique and inexpensive gifts. BE sure to make your bath salts a few weeks ahead of time to allow the oil to thoroughly scent the salts. Write a little homemade tag with the simple instructions: Place a few tablespoons of bath salts under the faucet as you draw your bath.
**** Caution: Individuals with diabetes should be careful when using bath salts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little sugar added to your face or body wash, does wonders for exfoliation and melts just about the time that you need to stop scrubbing! How convenient!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Silky Bath Oil:
You will need:
- 16 oz. of almond oil
- 1/2 oz of skin safe essential oil

Lavender Essential Oil –
Recipe Ideas For The Handmade Cosmetic Crafter By Mindy Schwartz
When it comes to manufacturing handmade cosmetics one ingredient no crafter should be without is lavender essential oil. Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) posses antibacterial proprieties, is gentle to both dry and oily skin, and has the ability to relieve such conditions as muscle pain, insomnia, headaches, burns, bug bites, eczema, psoriasis, and acne making it the most versatile of essential oils. It is also one of the few essential oils that can be used as a middle or top note in perfume due to its fresh, floral smell and affordable price.
Here are a few recipe ideas for using lavender in handmade cosmetics:
..>
..>
|
Salves, Ointments, and Balms: Lavender blended with neem seed oil or comfrey root powder produces a salve that soothes itching caused by insect bites, bruises, burns, and even diaper rash. Add cinnamon and clove for a pain relieving muscle rub ointment. Use lavender by itself as a gardener's salve to help chapped hands or as a temple balm to aid in falling asleep and to quell headaches.
Hair Care Products: Blend lavender with apple cider vinegar and nettle herbs for a normal-to-dry hair rinse. You can also try combing rosemary, peppermint, and lavender essential oils along with jojoba and oat extract, which produce a very effective scalp oil treatment. |

Bath and Body Care Products: Add lavender to toners, facial creams, and body lotions to combat acne or dry skin conditions. Lavender essential oil combined with dried lavender buds, dead sea salt, Epsom salt, and powdered milk make for a lovely bath salt recipe. Blend jojoba with rose geranium, lavender, sandalwood, and vanilla for a sweet and sexy feminine perfume oil.
Soaps: Try adding tea tree and lavender essential oils to opaque melt and pour soap base along with pumice (sprinkled at the bottom of your soap mold) for a deodorizing and exfoliating soap bar.
******* A word of caution, due to their volatility, research any essential oil, and always do a skin patch test before use.

| Mask For Oily/Normal Skin BY LIZ |
| Some beauty tips. Brewers yeast mixed with some water forms a paste makes a good mask for oily/normal skin. | ..>..>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your about to head out the door in 30 minutes, but you notice that you have all those flakes on your face from dry skin, then this recipe is for you! It gets rid of the flakes, plus it's good for you!
You simply put 1 tbs. milk with 2 tbs. honey and begin mixing! It takes a while for the mixture to completely blend together, so just be patient and keep on working while your watching "Good Morning America"! Then, wash your face with your hand soap (like Dial) and put the combo on your face and leave on for 15 minutes. It's a good idea to tie your hair back tightly, so all your fly-aways don't get caught in the stickiness of the mask and totally flaw your hairstyle that you worked and hour on! After the 15 minutes are up, just easily wash the mask off and "ta-da!" all those flakes are history! Then put on your make-up as usual, and your ready to face the world (without flakes on your face!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok girls out there. This mask really works!!! All you do is take 1 egg white and squeeze the juice from 1 lemon (strain) and then mix together for 3 minutes. | Feet Cleaner - BY JESSICA GARCIA |
|
I have a beauty day about once a week, I don't go anywhere and I do beauty almost all day, it's really soothing. Well I bleach my feet I know it sounds a little weird but it's great I get a good sized bowl and put warm water in it add a little dish soap and add a little bit of bleach not to much maybe 3 tablespoons. Take off your old nail polish and let your feet soak if you would like to you can scrub them with soap or feet scrub whatever you would like. At the end of this process you will find that yellow tint to your nails from polish is gone, your nails will be strong and very clean and soft trust me it's worth it.

| Banana Body Buffer - BY AUDREY M. |
|
This recipe is good for all skin types and especially good for dry skin.
It can be use as a body buffer as well as a face scrub. It helps to moisturize the skin, leaving it soft.
Ingredients:
1 or 2 ripe bananas, mashed up 1 tablespoon plain natural yoghurt 1 teaspoon honey 2 tablespoon oatmeal
Mix all the ingredients above and enjoy! | ..>..>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a good scrub:
Make a lather with soap in your hands and add sugar to this and scrub your face with this.
Dry the peel of orange and grind this and make it a powder. You can store this. Mix this powder with honey or curds or milk or plain water and apply to the face as a mask. Works great on any skin type.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mash avocado and then apply to your skin. Leave on for five minutes, rinse thoroughly. It will leave your skin feeling soft and clean.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For pouty lips, brush the skin of your lips with a toothbrush then rub cinnamon oil over them. It increases circulation resulting in pouty lips.
To flatten a raised inflamed pimple rub hemmeroid cream over it leaving it flat under your makeup for your night out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One thing that worked for me was mixing oatmeal and honey together and applying it on your face for 10 minutes and wash off with warm water. It helped prevent break outs from coming.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
here are a few tips on using leftover peices of soap!!!!
First, I try to adhere them to a larger bar I use in the shower. If they fail to adhere (mainly because of the shape of the larger bar), I them use them at the sink to wash my hands--a smaller bar shape is easier to use than in the shower. After the bar gets to a small sliver, I usually save them in a container and later grate them up to make home made laundry detergent (actually soap). Occasionally, I'll mix the grated pieces into a home made soap right before it is poured into molds. After it is cut into bars and dried, you get neat mosaic bars of soap.
Make Your Own Handsoap You can make your own handsoap from one small bar of soap or equal pieces of leftover soaps. Grate one (1) small bar of any kind of soap and add 3 cups of water. Put mixture in a microwave safe container and zap for 3 minutes. Pour into a handsoap container with a pump when cool. Makes 24 oz.
To reuse bits of leftover soap, buy a container of glycerin soap from a craft store such as Michael's (they are the cheapest I've found). I get the kind that can be melted in the microwave. Find a soap form such as a small oblong plastic container and spray it with pam or whatever the glycerin manufacturer suggests. Pour in a thin layer of melted glycerin soap, then put the leftover bits of bar soap in another layer, add more melted soap. Alternate layers ending with melted soap until the bar is as big as you want. This kind of soap lasts forever because the soap bits are usually quite dry and don't melt during use.
To ensure that the soap stays together, spray alcohol on the pieces you place into the glycerin. It sometimes doesn't bind together if you don't do this. This also prevents bubbles around the edges.
Homemade Peanut Butter IngredientsFor this recipe, you'll need:
- 1 tablespoon peanut or vegetable oil
- roasted, unsalted peanuts (shelled or unshelled)
- pinch of salt
Select the PeanutsStart with roasted, unsalted peanuts. You can buy them shelled or unshelled. If you buy unshelled peanuts, enlist family members to help shell them faster. You can take off the red skins of the peanuts, or you can leave them on. If you leave them on, you'll see little red flecks in the final product, which some people like in homemade peanut butter. One cup of peanuts will give you about 1/2 cup of peanut butter.
Combine the IngredientsPour 1 tablespoon of peanut or vegetable oil into a food processor. Now, pour in the peanuts. Add a pinch of salt. You can always add more salt later. Put on the lid and start the food processor. It will take around 2 to 3 minutes to chop and blend the peanuts. If the peanuts seem stuck, stop the machine to scrape the sides of the bowl. Then start mixing again. If you need to help it along, add a little more oil. Remember the oil will make the peanut butter thinner.
Serve or Store the Peanut Butter
After 2 to 3 minutes, stop the food processor and get a close look at texture of the peanut butter. Once it is as smooth as you like it, pour the peanut butter into a serving dish or storage container.
For crunchy peanut butter, chop some additional peanuts. Pour them into the bowl, and stir them into the peanut butter. Spread the peanut butter on your favorite bread for a delicious snack at any time of the day.
How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Pie - from a Real Pumpkin, Not a Can!
Click here for a PDF print version
You probably take canned pumpkin for granted. You're there, the can is there, there's a pumpkin on the label... open it and mix it up with spices to make a pie, right? Ah, but a pumpkin pie made from a fresh pumpkin tastes so much better than the glop that was processed last year! Here's how to do it, complete instructions in easy steps and completely illustrated. And it is much easier than you think, using my "patented" tips and tricks!
Directions for Making Pumpkin Pie from Scratch
Ingredients and Equipment
..>
- a pie pumpkin (see step 1)
- A sharp, large serrated knife
- an ice cream scoop
- a large microwaveable bowl or large pot
|
| ..>
Recipe and Directions
Step 1 - Get your pie pumpkin
"Pie pumpkins" are smaller, sweeter, less grainy textured pumpkins than the usual jack-o-lantern types. grocery stores usually carry them in late September through December in the U.S. Note: the Libby's can of cooked pumpkin is just there for reference - it is the small can, so that gives you an idea of the size of a typical pie pumpkin. They're only about 8 inches in diameter.
Just like selecting any squash, look for one that is firm, no bruises or soft spots, and a good orange color.
Step 2 - Prepare the pumpkin for cooking
Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool or warm water, no soap.
Cut the pumpkin in half. A serrated knife and a sawing motion works best - a smooth knife is more likely to slip and hurt you!
Step 3 - Scoop out the seeds...
And scrape the insides. You want to get out that stringy, dangly stuff that coats the inside surface. I find a heavy ice cream scoop works great for this.
Note: SAVE THE SEEDS:
The seeds can be used either to plant pumpkins next year, or roasted to eat this year! Place them in a bowl of water and rub them between your hands. then pick out the orange buts (throw that away) and drain off the water. Spread them out on a clean towel or paper towel to dry and they're ready to save for next year's planting or roast. Click here for roasting instructions! (opens in a new window)
Step 4 - Put it in a microwaveable bowl
Remove the stem, and put the pumpkin into a microwaveable. You may need to cut the pumpkin further to make it fit. The fewer the number of pieces, the easier it will to scoop out the cooked pumpkin afterwards.
Put a couple of inches of water in the bowl, cover it, and put in the microwave.
Step 5 - Cook the pumpkin until soft
Cook for 15 minutes on high, check to see if it is soft, then repeat in smaller increments of time until it is soft enough to scoop the innards out. Normally it takes 20 or 30 minutes in total.
Note: You CAN cook it on the stovetop; it will just take longer (almost twice as long)
Step 6 - Scoop out the cooked pumpkin
Using a broad, smooth spoon, (such as a tablespoon) gently lift and scoop the cooked pumpkin out of the skin. It should separate easily an in fairly large chucks, if the pumpkin is cooked enough.
Step 7 - Puree the pumpkin
To get a nice, smooth consistency, I use a Pillsbury hand blender. A regular blender works, too (unless you made a few frozen daiquiris and drank them first..). Or even just a hand mixer with time and patience.
With the hand blender, it just takes 2 or 3 minutes!
Step 8 - Done with the pumpkin!
The pumpkin is now cooked and ready for the pie recipe. Get the frozen daiquiris out from step 7 and take a break! :)
Step 9 - Make the pie crust
Yes, I know there are ready-made pie crusts in the frozen section at the store, but they really are bland and doughy. A flaky crust is easy to make!~
It is also time to start preheating the oven. Turn it on and set it to 400 F (200 C, for those in Europe)
Click here for illustrated pie crust instructions! (it will open in a new window)
Step 10 - Mix the pie contents
All the hard work is behind you! Here's where it gets really easy. If you start with a fresh 8" pie pumpkin, you will get about 3 cups of cooked, mashed pumpkin. Th e right amount of ingredients for this is as follows:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- one half teaspoon ground ginger
- one half teaspoon salt (optional, I don't use any)
- 4 large eggs
- 3 cups pumpkin glop (ok... "sieved, cooked pumpkin")
- 1.5 cans (12oz each) of evaporated milk (I use the nonfat version)
Mix well using a hand blender or mixer.
Step 11 - Pour into the pie crust
I like a deep, full pie, so I fill it right up to about one quarter to one half inch from the very top.
I like a deep, full pie, so I fill it right up to about one quarter to one half inch from the very top.
Step 12 - Bake the pie
Bake at 425 F (210 C ) for the first 15 minutes, then turn the temperature down to 350 F ( 175 C ) and bake another 45 to 60 minutes, until a clean knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Here is the finished pie, right out of the oven:
I use a blunt table knife to test the pie. The one at left has already been stuck in the pie, and you see it comes out pretty clean, when the pie is done.
Step 12 - Cool the pie
And enjoy! Warm or chilled, with whipped cream , ice cream or nothing at all - it's great!
TOLD YA!!! now go out and make you a few!!!!!! promise everyone will gobble these down and want more!
Christmas Can Still Be Merry Without All the Spending
The other day I heard something that surprised me. A recent nationwide study showed that 70% of those polled planned to spend the same amount or even more this Christmas than they did last year. When I read this, I couldn't help but wonder who the pollsters talked to when they did their poll.
They must not have talked to my friends, Chuck and Melinda, who were both downsized from their jobs a few months ago. They couldn't have contacted Mike and Faye, a single-income family struggling since Mike lost his job. The survey surely didn't include input from my friends Sarah or Rachel, both of whom have been laid off for close to a year. Maybe someone, somewhere is planning to spend more at Christmas, but certainly not anyone I know.
The truth is that many Americans are facing the challenge of celebrating the holidays this year on limited budgets due to cutbacks and downsizing. This prospect can be both discouraging and unnerving for those who have always done Christmas in a big way. Even families who normally celebrate rather simply are looking to simplify even more during these tight economic times.
Unfortunately, most Christmas traditions involve spending. Just think about all the dollars each year that go for gifts, wrapping paper, live trees, decorations, greeting cards and traditional meals with all the trimmings. But for those experiencing layoffs this year, spending a small fortune or charging up the credit cards for these things is not a prudent option.
Are there ways to enjoy the holiday season without all the spending? Thankfully the answer to this question is, "Yes." Here are some ideas for keeping the celebration simple, yet meaningful for your family.
- Handcrafted gifts and decorations – Experience the joy of giving something made with your own two hands. Handmade gifts are not only unique but they also show you care enough to invest time and energy into your giving. Check out library books containing homemade gift ideas or use Yahoo.com or Google.com to do an Internet search. The same goes for decorating your home. Instead of buying decorations, use your creative abilities plus things you already have on hand to give your home a festive look and feel.
- Electronic Season's Greetings - Sending Christmas cards instead of gifts is a great way to save money, but the cost of store-bought cards adds up quickly. Even if you make your own, the cost of postage can be restrictive for those on a tight budget. For friends and relatives who use email, consider sending electronic Christmas cards instead. Many websites send e-cards for free, and they offer a wide variety of cards from which to choose. Visit Gcards.com or 123greetings.com or do an Internet search for other free greeting card sites.
- Free family activities – When cutting corners, don't cut out all the fun. Look for ways your family can enjoy quality time together without spending. Check your newspaper's community calendar for free church programs, musicals or community events. Just driving around looking at Christmas lights while sipping homemade hot cocoa can be great fun when you do it together.
- Focus on giving rather than receiving – Instead of moaning about what you can't afford this year, why not focus on how you can give of yourself? Many non-profit organizations need extra helping hands during the holiday season. Contact your local Volunteer Center or United Way office to inquire about opportunities for service in your area. Volunteering together allows family members to experience the joy of giving without expecting anything in return.
- Low-cost or no-cost gift giving – Rather than exchanging gifts with extended family members and friends, plan a special evening together with each family during the holiday season. Enjoy a simple meal and then watch a favorite holiday movie or do a giant jigsaw puzzle together while munching on popcorn and snacks. Another option is to give gifts of time or service such as free babysitting, housecleaning, cooking, etc., to those on your gift list. Look for ways to give meaningfully instead of materially.
