Lights, Camera, Traction!
By Ryan Leyba

What if we told you that a scripted feature film about motocross is in the works? Would you worry that it will be another party foul that makes the sport look like a bunch of slightly stupid baboons playing in the dirt with loud bikes like ... oh, we don’t know ... maybe ... Supercross: The Movie? What if we told you the movie will draw from thirteen years of crazy moto moments and misadventures, courtesy of the creators and riders who bring you Crusty Demons Of Dirt every year? You might still be a little worried, considering the two-decade track record of movies trying to take action sports Hollywood. But if the Crusty guys were scared of difficult sh*t, they wouldn’t have started launching 160-foot jumps before anyone (including them) knew it was possible.

Translating the culture and character of a world like motocross to a narrative feature is a minefield littered with failed attempts. But one of those attempts—1999’s Frezno Smooth—almost succeeded enough to cross over to a mainstream audience. Directors Troy Adamitis and Adam Barker selected a cast of respected pros like Seth Enslow, Carey Hart and Mike Metzger to play exaggerated versions of themselves alongside pop culture icons like Ice-T and Ron Jeremy. The story, about a group of riders wreaking havoc on the California backwater of Fresno and suffering the consequences, was just ridiculous and entertaining enough to become an underground cult classic.

The film never found the success a lot of moto cine-geeks felt it should have, but it did find Crusty creators Jon Freeman and Dana Nicholson. "The only reason Frezno Smooth wasn’t able to penetrate the mainstream was because of bad distribution and timing—the world wasn’t ready for a film of that nature at the time," explains Freeman. "We thought it was funny as hell and realized Adam was very talented guy."

The admiration was mutual, with Barker being a long-time fan of both the early Crusty movies, and Freeman’s even earlier snowboard movies, and there’s been talk of a collaboration ever since. "When Adam and I get together, the creativity just starts oozing out. It’s kind of like a rapid-fire ping pong match—we have a really good synergy when we’re together and it just leads to more comedy, more funny situations and more action," claims Freeman.

For nearly ten years, the three bounced around ideas for projects, but their conflicting schedules never allowed for anything to stick. Eventually, Barker got to work on his own show, M80, for FuelTV. When M80 followed Crusty’s Unleash Hell tour through Australia last year, Barker was impressed with the access and antics that he found. He began mentally assembling a production that could almost be done parallel to the tour itself—one that, like Frezno Smooth—relied on riders to act in locations that pulled straight out of their real lives as touring pros. The project brainstorming began to increasingly focus on a possible feature film.

On the same tour, Freeman was asked by a journalist from the Australian mag FreeriderMX what the Crusty empire—which at that point included the movies, TV shows, clothing, and even pit bikes—could possibly conquer next, he offhandedly said: "Adam Barker of Frezno Smooth and I are working on a scripted feature film that will be unlike anything anyone has ever witnessed."

"By FreeriderMX actually putting the idea of the feature in print, it created the spark that we needed to take us from yapping about it to actually doing it," says Barker.

Using the Unleash Hell tour as a template, the direction of a script began to take shape. "This movie is not going to be based on the Crusty history or span the years of the Crusty Demons the way Dogtown and Z-Boys did. We all decided that it would be a lot more fun—and safe—to go with a fictional plot and then set it free in the hyped-up world of the Crusty Demons. That said, a lot of the elements are grabbed from real stories or lightly based on real incidents, but it’s far more important for us to have total freedom to be able to make sh*t up, exaggerate, and at times, just push it way over the top", explains Barker.

In addition to roles for Frezno veterans Enslow, Metzger, and Bubba, characters are being written for Travis Pastrana, Larry Linkogle, Dan Pastor, and a slew of next generation riders. In fact, the proposed lead for the movie is Blake "Bilko" Williams. Barker knows that having athletes act is thin line to dance along. "The last thing you want to do is create a scene that’s perfect for the story but goes totally against what the rider would ever do in real life. The only character we took a lot of liberty with is Bilko—his character is written a lot more innocent than he really is. But we want him to play it, so we’ll leave it up to him how to slice it."

"Cut! Bilko, hold that for a second, will you?"
Ever since Freeman let his comment to FreeriderMX slip, interest from Crusty’s rabid fan base, as well as potential investors, has only grown. That might be why the three are so tight-lipped when it comes to anything specific about the story. Or maybe they’re just afraid a journalist’s rough sketch of their ideas will make the movie look like another doomed, cliché-riddled attempt to bring motocross to the silver screen.

"There will be no bad guy enemy bikers, like the Daggers from Thrashin," Barker insists. "There is not going to be a small town underdog, who against all odds gets the girl and wins the contest with only seconds to go, like Hot Dog. There won’t be any soul searching, like North Shore. And there will be no dangerous "widow-maker" type mountain, like the K12 from Better Off Dead. Actually, scratch that. We got to have a widow-maker mountain. I gotta tell Jonny that we need to write one in!"

Look for the new Crusty feature film, Bilko Versus The Widow Maker, in a theater near you some time next year. We’re guessing it’ll make Supercross: The Movie look worse than it already does.
