"Earth Givers has teamed up with the University of Florida to create the needed carbon reductions to offset this years 2008 Gator home football season. Earth Givers has developed a unique model to offset game day carbon emissions created by collegiate sporting events, and the University of Florida will be the first university in the nation to be "carbon neutral" for the entire season. What makes this program unique is that the majority of the carbon offsets will be created in the Gainesville area and not in some distant country such as China, India, or Brazil. This local approach will help educate participants about the project's objectives and provide a sense of accomplishment at the local level. The emissions will be neutralized for each game through activities such as compact fluorescent light exchanges, local reforestation projects, UF photovoltaic projects, and purchasing methane recovery through GRU."

On Wednesday, June 4, 2008, we're hosting a Benefit Show for consciousalliance.org. Straight from Justin's (the founder's) email: "[Whole Foods Market] have recently donated 500,000 lbs. of food to the Conscious Alliance and it is the start of an official partnership between our 2 organizations. The funds we are now pushing hard to raise are for this food to be delivered to impoverished communities on Native American Reservations. We have to first get this food shipped to Den. And then will have to pay increasing gas and trucking costs to get these natural food products to remote locations in the U.S. That are in dire need of emergency food relief." The final line-up (and in order of appearance) are The Rochevanies, Murphee K, Max's Birthday, and Rubber Tramps. Doors are at 9 p.m. and the show starts at 10. $6/7. Free Cookies! And possibly free pizza from Hungry Howie's.

Grooveshark is teaming up with Sigma Beta Rho and helping Prairie View Elementary School here in Gainesville find instrument donations for their students. Other chapters of Sigma Beta Rho around the country are also donating to middle and high schools so adult sized instruments are acceptable too.
The donation will occur at the school on Wednesday, April 23rd.
If you have any instruments you would like to donate, they would be very much appreciated!!

So far, I'm in the process of planning two Grooveshark shows for next semester. One is at the Atlantic on February 1st, and the line up includes some sweet non-locals (confirmation pending) and most likely Towers of Hanoi from our hometown.
I'd like the second show to be a chill acoustic set at the Side Bar. I'm waiting for a date on this Grooveshark Acoustic Show.
Please let me know if you'd like to play the acoustic show. Also, let me know if you'd like to be on call as a back-up band for February 1st, just in case something doesn't work out.
Thanks! And see you guys around the music scene.

The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra needs the community's help to survive. This same situation of budget cuts happened in my hometown when the Florida Philharmonic bankrupted. Many of my friends' parents and teachers lost their jobs and the awe-inspiring concerts stopped. Please don't let it happen again.
Via Fusebox Funk's bulletin post:
Hello friends, The Jax Symphony needs your help. Information is listed below, but without support from the community, we may lose this vital asset to the artistic community. Please read below:
-- Dear Friends,
The symphony musicians have been in the process of negotiating a new working contract with the board and management of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Our past contract has expired and we had been "playing and talking" since the season began. The management has now cancelled the "play and talk" agreement and informed us that we are being locked out. The lock out is because we refused to accept cuts to our income and benefits that have already been reduced in previous contracts. Provisions that are in place to ensure artistic excellence and quality performances are also in jeopardy. In 2001 and 2004, Jacksonville Symphony musicians accepted cuts with assurances from Symphony management that they would be able to fix structural problems thanks to our financial concessions. Obviously that was not true. Problems still exist today despite the musicians' best efforts to help. Now they expect more sacrifices from the musicians. We simply cannot continue on this course. There must be a better solution!
We believe that the people of Jacksonville want and deserve a great orchestra as its cultural core. We have seen a lifetime of growth & development with our symphony. Over the years, the musicians have always been committed to creating the absolute best for our community! Now, we must ask our community (and its leaders) to support the musicians in this crucial time. Please help us by insisting that the board and management find better ways to ensure the continued health & prosperity of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra!
If you are willing, please write letters and ask your friends to write to:
Jim Van Vleck, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Alan Hopper, Executive Director Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra 300 West Water Street, Suite 200 Jacksonville, FL 32202
Thank you!
