(High on Stress has) got that gift of mixing guitars, bass, drum and vocals, and turning out great tunes with that special magic touch. What is it with Minneapolis and great rock bands? Is it in the water or something?

We just got hip to the fact that Minneapolis' storied First Avenue is puttin' on a tribute show to The Replacements to honor the 25th Anniversary of “Let it Be” as well as the paperback release of “All Over But the Shouting.” And one of our faves - High on Stress - has been asked to be on the bill.

“...the wonderfully open-souled LET IT BE is their masterpiece.”
- Spin Magazine
“This is a brilliant rock & roll album: as loose as it is deliberate, as pretty as it is hard rocking and as pissed off at all the right things...as it is hilarious...”
- Rolling Stone
The Replacements last album for Twin/Tone before signing with Sire, 1984's LET IT BE is widely hailed as not just one of the group's career best, but also as an across the boards alt-rock masterpiece. It is anchored by the all-time 'Mats' classics “I Will Dare,” “Androgynous,” “Sixteen Blue,” “Unsatisfied” and “Answering Machine,” and definitive performances throughout by the band's legendary founding line-up: lead singer/songwriter and guitarist Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars (drums) and brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson (guitar and bass, respectively).

Current mood:  tired
Hi all,

As you know we have been taking some time away because of the birth of Nick's first baby.  Henry Franklin Leet was born on April 8th, 2009.  He was 8 pounds 2 oz and stands/lays at 1 ft 6.5 inches.  His favorite band is the Beatles and his favorite hobby is destroying diapers and staring at lights.  He also has sideburns and long hair.

and with that...we are returning to the stage on May 29th at the 7th Street Entry and we've got an awesome line-up.  Also playing that evening are the Glad Version, the Mood Swings and the Snaps.  It will be an evening of fun rock and roll.  Be there or stay at home licking ashtrays.

Star Tribune!

The other acts assembled for its CD party tonight at the Fine Line (Romantica, Slim Dunlap and the Snaps) are a good indicator of the music High on Stress put on its album, "Cop Light Parade." Led by Minot, N.D.-reared singer/guitarist Nick Leet, the quartet has a little bit of Romantica's languid and lovely folk-rock sound, as in the opening title track, plus lots of Dunlap's barnstorming twang, heard in the yahoo rocker "Rhode Island." They're a band not too cool to call themselves alt-country, and that's a good indicator of the album's pure, inspired sound.

LOCAL MUSIC / HIGH ON STRESS

Today: Like plenty of other local bands, High on Stress recalls both the alt-country sway of the Jayhawks and the devil-may-care swagger of the Replacements. Band leader Nick Leet even sings like a sobered-up Paul Westerberg, although it sounds like his natural voice as opposed to mere hero worship. The recording of the band's new sophomore album, "Cop Light Parade," was apparently wrought with strife, although you wouldn't know it from spinning easygoing, instantly likable tracks like "White Sugar" and "Abbey Rose." To further push the Replacements angle, the band drafted a former band member (Slim Dunlap) to play the CD-release show alongside Snaps and Romantica. 8 p.m.; Fine Line Music Cafe, 318 First Ave. N., Mpls.; $6; 612-338-8100.

Review of "Cop Light Parade"

This is one of my favorite rock 'n' roll albums of 2008. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to reviews, so I suppose the easiest way to sum it up is to compare the band to great Minneapolis bands like The Replacements, Jayhawks, Husker Du, et al. While they wear their influences proudly on their collective sleeves, they offer up a very refreshing and original sound with catchy lyrical hooks. Personal fave (this week) is Abbey Rose, which would make Paul Westerberg proud. Thanks guys for carrying the torch.

hello again! i'm back from the dirty south after a two week tour, and as a result you didnt hear from me for a minute...sorry. but have no fear, for minnesota music is still alive and kickin'!!
while i was away, high on stress released their new album "cop light parade". the foursomes' sound is so very twin cities, but even better yet, very replacements/westerbergish. not only does the first cut on the record sound like a missing track from the 'mats "all shook down", but they have received praise from peter jesperson(replacements manager, new west records), as well as paulwesterberg.net. only being back in town for less than a week, i havent had much of a chance to get past the first few tracks, but i definitely recommend it just based on those first few tracks. i actually have that first tune stuck in my head after two quick listens. get it!

Metromix by Rob Van Alstyne

Friday, September 5th

Local quartet High on Stress make the kind of music Minneapolis was once known for: heart-on-sleeve bar rock with just a hint of the prairie in it, the sort of tunes that groups like Soul Asylum and the Replacements rode to mythic status. They come darn close to matching the squalid splendor of their forebears on the best moments of their new album, Cop Light Parade, which they celebrate the release of tonight at the Fine Line Music Café. It's only fitting that former 'Mats lead guitarist Slim Dunlap joins them on the bill for what will be a rare live appearance from him these days (9 p.m., $6, 21+).

Finally I shall end this short ticket by announcing some news of my favourite kids of Minneapolis, I named High one Stresses, on which I had already written a ticket adulator, some weeks ago. Their new album Cop Light Parade went out these last days. They can listen to extracts (the eponymous piece is always available in illustration of the ticket aforementioned adulator) on the site BABY CD and possibly to buy the album being discussed. What I made, not waiting more than aeroplanes bring it to me of oceans beyond; I therefore did not finish it with you and with this group which would be worth going out of shade in our lands (you will find, their myspace) there.

Bands

- New CD: High On Stress, a four-piece rock and alternative country band out of Minneapolis that has North Dakota connections, will release the CD "Cop Light Parade" on Sept. 2. The band includes Minot natives Chad Wheeling, guitar, and Nick Leet, vocals and guitar, as well as drummer Mark Devaraj and bassist/vocalist Jim Soule. The band has been together for five years and has played such venues as the 7thStreet Entry and the Fine Line Music Cafe in the Twin Cities; they've played with Jackson Browne, the Flamin' Oh's, Pat MacDonald (from Timbuk3) and Slim Dunlap from the Replacements. Previous CD: "Moonlight Girls." What critics said: Tom Hallet, Pulse of the Twin Cities: "These local rocky-tonk heroes-to-be are equally at home spewing Mats-ian vinegar, howlin' out Haggard-isms or riffin' off Rolling Stones-y lyrical lashings." Paul Demko, City Pages: "(Nick Leet's) clever, enigmatic lyrics of 'Eyeliner Blues' provide evidence that the band's been taking notes while listening to their Paul Westerberg records." Demko called the group's song, "Minot," "an irresistible poison-pen Valentine to North Dakota," with lyrics: "This is an ode to cover bands, and bad punk rock, and a town I can't stand," CD release show: Sept. 5, Fine Line Music Cafe, Minneapolis, with Slim Dunlap, Romantica, The Snaps. Round the Dial - Cop Light Parade (single) review

Over The Back Fence (Rock N' Roll News):

*Item! We don't want to spoil our upcoming CD review/Show preview, but just can't keep quiet about local boys done good HIGH ON STRESS' new material...One quick listen to their debut, Moonlight Girls, a few moons back, prompted us to lavish high praise upon the 'Mats-meet-Old 97's sound the band pumped out with little effort, and a teaser spin of the title track from their recent second effort, Cop Light Parade, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt MG was no fluke.

The song, available for your aural perusal now at www.myspace.com/highonstress, rings out like a proud, bar-bruised jukebox anthem with alternating hints of inspiration from the likes of The Silos, Steve Forbert, and Big Star. A full CD review is forthcoming, but suffice to say that if the remainder of this recording is up to par with this 'un, we're looking at another sturdy collection of genuine Americana poking out like healthy country grass between the dirty, cracked sidewalks of Minneapolis. You can pick up the album and get show info on their site. Check 'em out!

Of the music we've received, there was one song I really liked, by a group called High On Stress. When you play the song, you'll hear that they wear their Paul Westerberg influence on their sleeve, but part of that homage is the kind of song with well-crafted lyrics and a memorable chorus that Westerberg is so capable of. You might hear a little Ryan Adams from the Whiskeytown era in there, too. You can get a fuller sense of the band at their website

Best of luck to High On Stress with their upcoming CD release.

It's been a long time since anything from Minneapolis has caught my ear, but High on Stress channels the city's hey day. "Cop Light Parade", from the quartet's debut LP "Moonlight Girls", is reminiscent of fellow Minnesotans The Jayhawks and Soul Asylum. A Free Man likes nothing more than well crafted Americana, and that's what High on Stress is offering. "Moonlight Girls" is out and available from CD Baby.

Hailing from Minneapolis, and drawing on the sounds of Wilco, Spoon, and Neil Young, High on Stress have a classic sound that would fit just as well in an old west saloon as it would in an oxygen bar in Brooklyn. Well, maybe an oxygen bar that likes alt-folky goodness. Not one of those crappy ones that plays techno. Anywho, High on Stress have an instantly likable vibe. And they were nice enough to send along a track from their soon to be released album.
