Real quick thing: I need your help in choosing a name for a new
CrossFit facility we're opening this summer in Seattle's Capitol Hill

If you want to be put on the mailing list for the new joint, please let me know: andrew@foundationcrossfit.com

Happy Thursday!

I hope everyone is doing well as Spring turns into Summer. Seattle better shape up and show some sun soon (like the alliteration?!)

Anywho, we just wanted to let everyone know what we have planned for this Memorial Day weekend. The gym "events" are both free to everyone, so come down and bring someone you care about along.

Saturday the 24th: RAINSTORM XIV led by our "Trainer-at-Large" Big John Hovey @ 11am.
Sunday the 25th: Banya 5 from 5pm till whenever you want to leave!
Monday the 26th: What better way to celebrate Memorial Day than to do some of CrossFit's Heroes workouts! We'll have two workouts to come out to! 11am and 6:30pm.

Remember that the 24th and the 26th are free to everyone. Come and see what the fuss is about.. it's going to be fun!

Current mood:  thirsty
Many of us who enjoy a good day of fitness also enjoy a weekend of kicking back and relaxing. Weekends, as well as some weekdays, could tempt us to not only enjoy ourselves too much, but to knock back a very high amount of beers to relax even more. But some tend to look at beer drinking as a step down from the ladder of being fit. Although this may be quite true, if you can moderate your beer drinking, it could actually benifit your workout!

Many look at beer and think of the negative side affects, such as the beer belly, sluggish feeling, belligerent actions, etc.. What some don't see though is how healthy beer can actually be, as long as we can control the intake. Any time we deal with nuitrition, we should control the amount we consume to reach peak performance of a healthy life.

Don't believe me? See Ask Men's Beer & Fitness Guide. They break down the positive points that beer has and how we can take advantage of these hidden secrets. So the next time you drink that beer, don't hate yourself. Just remember, moderation is key to good health!

Welcome to Spring!

April is upon us and summer is just around the corner.  We’d like to take a minute to thank everyone who has helped make Foundation CrossFit possible.  Thanks to everyone who has come out, loaned us equipment, gave us help with the webpage and everything else.  We appreciate you all and couldn’t have done it without you.

Our new website is in the works and as we grow as a gym and a community we need to let our area know who we are and what we do. Three of our guys, Jed, Nate and Grant, have reviewed us on Yelp.com, a community-based review site which you can see (and add a review) here. Then we have DJ Hyphen who hosts Sunday Night Sound Session on KUBE 93 who’s been shouting us out on a constant basis. We’ve also been selling some shirts by Ken of Branded Solutions and guys like Nate and Mike have been wearing them not only in the gym, but everywhere else. Lastly we have Marc and Dwinson over in the Bremerton/Silverdale area representing Foundation CrossFit by working out and rockin’ our sweet t-shirts. Huge thanks to all these dudes and their support.

If you are looking for ways to help, the best way to support us is to work hard and astonish your friends with your progress!  Oh, and referrals won’t hurt either.  to that end, we offer this incentive: every time you refer someone who gets one of our services, you get a one-hour training session SO START SPREADING THE WORD! Tell your friends to add us here on MySpace!

We will be having a RAINSTORM every Saturday this month. After this weekend (04/05) we’ll start them at 11am. You can expect some more fun as the weather warms up: workouts like "Greenlake Laps for Time", Ultimate Frisbee, Hoover Ball and "Bell Hell" as well as a plethora of others from Andrew’s messed up mind. We’re also in the process of setting up some seminars on some fitness-related subjects like nutrition, and stretching, but need to know if you would want that in a class setting or as a separate weekend seminar.

If we haven’t mentioned this enough already, we welcome any feedback.  If you would like to see something done better, or not at all, or even have a killer idea for a workout pass it on!  We’ll take it on board and make Foundation CrossFit a better place.

Let’s stay motivated and active! If you’re currently a member, time to up your frequency. If you’ve only been in once (or never at all) it’s time to get it going and get to work! The CrossFit Seattle Championship happens May 18th!

As always, reach us with any questions/comments/concerns. If you’d like to be removed from the email list, let us know.

See y’all soon!

 from The Modern Forager:
>>>>

Last night, I just had to finally catch an episode of The American Gladiators. While that was on, I caught a commercial for Propel fitness water. You can watch the video at that link.

The basic premise is that many vitamin-enhanced waters have 125 calories per bottle. They then run through the various activities that would be required to burn those 125 calories: 492 situps, 2640 steps (walking), 995 jumps (jump-rope). But then they tell us that Propel only has 25 calories. That sounds like great news - only 1/5 the calories of "the other waters". It didn't take my mathematical brain to kick in and think, "So uhh…one would still have to do nearly 100 situps, walk over 500 steps, or jump rope 200 turns to burn those calories. How many people do that?" That's advertising at its finest. I doubt most people are thinking through those calculations to see that they probably won't burn off much more than that Propel "fitness" water during their time in the gym.

If I had money to burn, I'd make a commercial that said "Water has 0 calories. To burn off those calories, you can sit on the couch and do absolutely nothing." Seriously, what happened to people that we can no longer drink water? Even tea and coffee are good non-caloric beverages. But there's really no need for everything to be sweetened or artificially sweetened. I guess our modern food environment has so distorted our taste buds that plain ol' everyday water just doesn't cut it anymore.

It's true. A lot of people buy "health" and "energy" drinks because they apparently do the work for you. Obviously this is not true, but the media and it's manipulative techniques keep you buying their products. During the Superbowl* Gatorade also ran an ad for their new lower calorie sports drink, G2. Like Scott said above, it's not going to matter if you're not burning the calories anyway!

*If you didn't know already, you can view all of the Superbowl ads here on MySpace: 2008 Superbowl Ads

Just something to think about next time you're at the store.

... but new myostatin drugs that claim to be four times more potent than steroids without the harmful side effects

isn't THAT a harmful side effect?!

So I PR'ed today. The best part of it was that I didn't train to get a better time- It just happened. I kept hearing around the CrossFit community (the official site, comments per posts, message boards) that people would have improved strength, endurance, flexibility, movement, or in my case, time.

Last time I met with this workout, I finished up at 8:47. I've always been a damn strong guy for my size, but had never had experienced a gain like this.

'Diane'
21-15-9 reps for time:
 Deadlift, 225 lbs
 Handstand Pushups

Andrew 5:00

Feels good. Now the goal is finish in four minutes.
