--- --- --- other side of your mind ---
ogod i'm only cryin it's not the end of the world i'm just a lonely guy and i'm in love with a girl on the other side of the world
i hope i never lose you i hope my spirit remains after my body remains i hope my memory stays on the other side of my days
i don't trust the front page pictures of the violence and gore i keep my focus fixed on all the sunlight in store on the other side of the war
and when you're broken hearted, take a good look inside you just might get surprised you never know what you'll find on the other side of your mind
no excuse for apathy there's no excuse for me sliding down the slippery slope we cannot stop, we cannot cope
sliding down the slippery slope we're lost in thought we've lost all hope you swore that we would love again, but if not now then when

I Ain't Living Long Like This (Rodney Crowell)
You looked for trouble and you found it son Straight down the barrel of a lawman's gun You'd try to run but you don't think you can You make one move and you're dead man, friend
I ain't living long like this I can't live at all like this, can I baby
He slipped the handcuffs on behind my back Then he left me freezing on a steel rail track They got 'em all in the jailhouse, ain't they bay I ain't living long like this
Grew up in Houston off of Wayside drive Son of a carhop in some all night dive Dad drove a stock car to an early death All I remember was a drunk man's death
I ain't living long like this I can't live at all like this can I baby
We know the story how the wheel goes round Don't let 'em take you to the man downtown Can't sleep at all in the jailhouse, baby I ain't living long like this
You live for angel, she's a roadhouse queen Make Texas ruby look like Sandra Dee You want to love her but you don't know how You're at the bottom of the jailhouse now I ain't living long like this I can't live at all like this, can I baby
You know the story 'bout the jailhouse rock Go on and do it, but just don't get caught They got 'em all in the jailhouse, ain't they baby I ain't living long like this

"If you removed all of the homosexuals and homosexual influence from what is generally regarded as American culture," said author Fran Lebowitz, "you would pretty much be left with [the TV game show] 'Let's Make A Deal.'" That's an exaggeration, of course, but it contains a large grain of truth. I offer this as a prod for you to deepen your understanding of the complexities of gender, Virgo. Astrologically speaking, it's an excellent time to do so. If you identify yourself as a heterosexual, meditate on the qualities you express that are commonly thought of as the specialty of the opposite sex. Consider the possibility that you are actually 65 percent female, 25 percent male, and 10 percent neither, or maybe 15 percent female, 70 percent male, and 15 percent transgender. If you regard yourself as gay, explore the hypothesis that a part of you is secretly kind of straight. Open your mind to the possibility that human beings come in hundreds of different genders.
(Rob Brezny, Virgo horoscope week of Jan 29 2009)
"Life on earth is just the dress rehearsal before the real production. You will spend far more time on the other side of death - in eternity - than you will here. Earth is the staging area, the preschool, the tryout for your life in eternity. It is the practice workout before the actual game; the warm-up lap before the race begins. This life is preparation for the next."
I was wondering why the LA Weekly switched astrologers...
Rochelle "Rockie" Gardiner
All and everything goes this Halloween, as liberating Uranus and daring Mars perfect their rewarding trine.
—The Rockie Horoscope, Oct. 30, 2008
Rochelle “Rockie” Gardiner, Sagittarius, departed planet Earth at 11:11 a.m. on Friday, October 31, Halloween.
She was 70.
Rockie was born in Brooklyn and raised in Lawrence, on Long Island.
She attended Syracuse University and received a degree from Barnard College.
She worked in publishing at Doubleday, where she was an editor of children’s books.
While at Doubleday she worked with literary luminaries such as Shirley Jackson and Arthur Miller.
Rockie married the love of her life, Peter Gardiner, in 1958.
Peter was a cutting-edge psychedelic film director and a pioneer of “pop films” (the predecessor to music videos).
In 1963, Rockie and Peter had a son, Jeremy Gardiner, and Rockie left the publishing world to make more time for her family.
While living in Laurel Canyon in 1966, Rockie found her calling when she was introduced to astrology by a friend.
Tragically, Rockie was widowed in October 1968. She never remarried.
Rockie’s column, THE ROCKIE HOROSCOPE, first appeared in the L.A. Weekly in 1983.
Although she found her astrological calling years before, it was in the pages of the Weekly that she found her voice.
Her column’s pop-culture references to celebrity, rock & roll, politics and professional sports resonated with readers and brought her a cult status.
Rockie’s column went on to become nationally syndicated and even graced the pages of Vogue magazine.
She was one of a kind — fiercely intelligent, insightful, sometimes caustic, always witty, introspective and often inspiring.
She will be greatly missed, not just by her close-knit circle of family and friends, but also by so many of you, who connected with her through her column.
Rockie, recognizing how important that connection has been for many of you over the last 25 years, requested that a public memorial be held for her readers. (Details will be posted soon at laweekly.com.)
Rockie Gardiner was predeceased by Harry Greene and Bess Miller (parents), John Miller (brother), Linda Miller (sister) and Peter Gardiner (husband).
She leaves behind a son, Jeremy “The Crab” Gardiner (Los Angeles), Uncle Leo Marshall (Brooklyn), and Dr. David and Nancy Milstein of Scarsdale (sister and brother-in-law), as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, her partner-in-crime Vicky Taft (Los Angeles) ... and her black cat, Terra Kitty.

.. I WISH I WAS A MOLE IN THE GROUND ..
I wish I was a mole in the ground Yes, I wish I was a mole in the ground If I's a mole in the ground, I'd root that mountain down and I wish I was a mole in the ground.
Kimpy wants a nine dollar shawl Yes'n Kimpy wants a nine dollar shawl When I come o'er that hill with a forty dollar bill Tis baby, where you been so long?
I been in the bin so long Yes I been in the bin so long Well I've been in the bin with the rough and rowdy men Tis baby, where you been so long?
I don't like no railroad man No, I don't like no railroad man Cause a railroad man, he'll kill you if he can And he'll drink down your blood like wine
I don't like that oil-drillin man No, I don't like no oil-drillin man Cause an oil-drillin man, he'll kill you if he can And he'll drink down your blood like money
I wish I was a lizard in the spring Yes I wish I was a lizard in the spring If I's a lizard in the spring, I'd hear my darling sing And I wish I was a lizard in the spring
I wish I was a car on the road Yes I wish I was a car on the road If I's a car on the road, I'd be Tom Joad and I wish I was a car on the road
Kimpy, let your hair roll down Baby, let your hair hang down Let your hair roll down, and your bangs a'curl around Baby, let your hair roll down
(traditional with added verses by Emily Lacy)
.. HARES ON THE MOUNTAIN ..
Oh Sally, my dear, it's you I'd be kissing, Oh Sally, my dear, it's you I'd be kissing. She smiled and replied, you don't know what you're missing.
Oh Sally, my dear, I wish I could wed you, Oh Sally, my dear, I wish I could bed you. She smiled and replied, then you'd say I'd misled you.
If all you young men were hares on the mountain, If all you young men were hares on the mountain, How many young girls would take guns and go hunting?
If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes, If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes, How many young girls would go beating the bushes?
If all you young men were fish in the water, If all you young men were fish in the water, How many young girls would undress and dive after?
But the young men are given to frisking and fooling, Oh, the young men are given to frisking and fooling, So leave them alone and attend to your schooling

Handshake Poem
And on the Seventh Day, The Angel of Meroni arose from the ashes. Kid Icarus flew too close to the Sun and fell to Earth. But then *Bam* -- an explosion and *Snap* -- went the cannons on that same dark day: "Turn the lock and throw away the key," my Brother hath said to me.
-- Alexander Gedeon, circa 1998

I wanted to say a brief word of thanks to all the bands & musicians that played with me during my residency at Mr. T's Bowl in September:
Odd Modern Soggy Duchamp Octet Archways City City The Kris Special Bad Dudes New Maximum Donkey Berry Entertainment Jorge Huaman Ryen Slegr Ezra Buchla Laura Steenberge Corey Fogel Guy Christiano Joe Martin Ian Capilouto Star Wick
Apologies if I missed anybody who helped. Arlo Aldahl has always been my favorite soundman on planet Earth. And thanks to Gus & Becca for helping me book the month. It was kind of an epic undertaking. Nels Cline came on one of the Monstro nights, which was a nice surprise. Anyway, I like the residency format for performing cause it feels communal. And thanks to all my friends who came out last night to Spaceland. Hope to play out again soon, but planning ..ing Mt. Lowe next.
Vote Obama, Bitches!! Or Else!! I went and filmed a statement and a short song called "More Of What Doesn't Work Doesn't Work" for a documentary directed by Shepard Fairey and Melissa Balin. John C Reilly had the best catchphrase: "Obamanos!" Dude is genius.

Posted a new demo of a song that just turned 4 years old -- "Living on the Fringes." The solo section (after verse 2) is unfinished. If anyone wants to try their hand, download it, record something, and send me an mp3. If it fits I'll keep it. I was thinking authentic bluegrass mandolin or something, but I'm open to pretty much anything. Now playing: Bicycle Built for Two (Daisy Bell), Katherine Tingley, Autumn Leaves, Freight Train, No Country For Old Men, always David Lynch, finally understanding Mulholland Drive. Going to Michigan to finish the record. Really into YouTube lately -- people are really starting to get creative! Vitamins are my new best friends... Tibetan dzi beads are dreamy, especially the 9 eye for me... and Pythagorean Harmony seems to be the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe -- thank you Joscelyn Godwin! Grasping the demiurge. Did everyone see the movie Wordplay about crossword puzzlers? A real American classic. Will Hillary Clinton please WITHDRAW? Anyone who wants to learn music should check out this GREAT resource: MUSICTHEORY.NETSpecifically check out the NOTE TRAINERINTERVAL EAR TRAINERGood luck identifying all twelve intervals by sound alone!! (In college they make you do it for two years straight.) (I think I finally have an album title... this is an important step!!)
