Autumn Premieres of new motets by Robert Hugill....

at St. Botolph without Bishopsgate and at ....St. Johns Smith Square........

This Autumn sees the premieres in London of two new commissions from Robert Hugill. Both are motets for unaccompanied choir.

On Monday 12th October 2009 Robert Hugill’s introit motet, Thou, O Christ, will be premiered at 6pm Evensong at the church of St. Botolph without Bishopsgate, Bishopsgate, London EC2M  3TL. The motet will be sung by the choir of St. Botolph’s church, conductor Timothy Storey. Thou, O Christ is a setting of an English translation prayer by St. Symeon the New Theologian, a saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church who lived in the 10th century. Robert Hugill was commissioned to specifically write a setting by St. Symeon for the choir of St. Botolph's Church.

On Saturday 19th December, Robert Hugill’s motet Videte Miraculum will be premiered by Chapelle du Roi, conductor Alistair Dixon, at St. John’s Smith Square, London, SW1P 3HA. The performance forms part of their concert, New Lamps for Old which takes place as part of St. John’s Smith Square’s 24th Annual Christmas Festival. The concert contrasts new and old settings of the same texts and includes motets by Paul Ayres, Francis Pott, Morten Lauridsen, Gabriel Jackson, Thomas Tallis and Palestrina. Robert Hugill’s motet sets the same Latin text as Thomas Tallis’s Respond of the same name. Though Robert Hugill uses a contemporary idiom, his style is inflected by plain-chant and his motet uses the same structure as the original Respond. Tickets for the concert price £25.00 / £20.00 / £15.00 / £10.00 are available from St. John’s Smith Square, telephone 020 7222 1061.

The FifteenB Consort is a six person vocal ensemble

Hugill. The members of the FifteenB Consort are drawn from the choir FifteenB which was founded by Robert Hugill in 1994. Since then FifteenB have performed regularly at St. Mary’s Church, Cadogan Street including presenting 4 concerts at the Chelsea Festival.

From the CHURCH MUSIC QUARTERLY:

Robert Hugill is a mainly self-taught composer who has written charming music which is easy on the ear. Much is linked to chant, something that the composer was brought up with during his time with catholic church choirs. This disc comprises 77 minutes of music for vocal octet, tenor and strings, as well as octet and organ. Much has been specifically re-arranged for this recording.

The tenor soloist in The Lord bless thee and What is Man? is Christopher Watson. His beauty of sound appears effortless, yet he brings the impassioned moments directly to our attention with style. The eight voices of the 'eight:fifteen' vocal ensemble produce a radiant sound that is full of potential. Octets are notoriously difficult for achieving balanced and blended results, but there are only occasional lapses, which do not come close to distracting us from the many superb things we hear. Brough capably directs the two very different groups of musicians with considerable aplomb.

This is a disc of initial unknowns, but the end result is delightful.
