In May 2008, a movie called "A Shine of Rainbows" was shot in Inishowen. The movie was made by a Canadian production called Sepia Films. Luckily for us, the cast and crew of the movie came into the persian bar to our weekly wednesday night sessions and like what they heard and we were subsequently asked to play on the soundtrack and compose some incidental music for it. Talk about right place at the right time!!

A Shine of Rainbows is directed by Vic Sarin and produced by Tina Pehme and Kim C. Roberts. It stars Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Aidan Quinn (Michael Collins, Desperately seeking Susuan, Legends of the Fall) and John Bell.

Here's the Synopsis:
"Tomas, a shy eight-year-old orphan, is adopted by Maire McDonald, a beautiful woman bursting with life. She brings him home to Corrie, a remote island off the coast of Ireland where he meets Alec, her reticent husband who cannot hide his disappointment. Undiscouraged Marie shares with Tomas the secret of the seals and other wonders and shows him that you can find magic anywhere- if you really look. In this rugged and enchanting world, Tomas thrives and Alec begins to see in Tomas what Maire always has. But when tragedy strikes, Tomas is faced with his greatest challenge for he'll lose everything unless he can find- and share- the magic that's inside him. Risking all, Tomas embarks on a perilous journey where he will need to call on all of Maire's gifts to triumph and come home."

It was about this time last year that we were busy working on the soundtrack with L.A. composer Keith Power. The way it worked was he would rsend us some tracks that he composed for the soundtrack and then we would go to the Blast Furnace in Derry and overdub the parts, i.e harp, fiddle, whistle, accordion and singing. The rest of the soundtrack music was played by an orchestra in a rfor the movie. There were 4 of these, including the song that we wrote for the rolling credits called "Early in the Morning".

The Movie has now been premiered at several Festivals including the Toronto FIllm Festival, The Chicago Film Festival and at the London Film Festival.

On December 2nd, it will have it's Irish Premiere at the Cinemagic International Film Festival. It will be shown at the Movie House on Dublin Road in Belfast.

The Henry Girls have been asked to perform at the reception before the movie at 6pm and the screening is at 7pm. There will be a couple of busloads of people coming up from Inishowen, many of whom featured in the movie as extras or who worked on the set.

Its a very exciting time for all us Inishoweners to get a chance to see Inishowne in its full glory on the big screen.

tickets are £4/£3.50 and the ticket hotline is 02890 246609

At the Charles macklin Festival in Culdaff this year (October 2009), we had the absolute privilege of meeting the legendary Irish playwright Brian Friel. As a special birthday tribute to him, we were asked by Anne McGrory of the Macklin Fesival in Culdaff to learn 3 songs that have been featured in Brian Friel plays over the years.

The 3 songs were Skylark by Dinah Washington, Anything Goes by Cole Porter and The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra. Joleen also played 2 piano pieces, a Chopin Waltz and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, on the grand piano which had been hired in to McGrorys especially for the evening.

Brian Friel came and told us afterwards that he loved the performance and he even bought us a drink! We were absolutely delighted to meet him let alone be part of his birthday celebrations, he is a really lovely gentleman.

Mark Patterson from BBC Radio Foyle was the MC on the night and other performers included Roisin McGrory, Melanie and Paula Houten among others, all playing music that was somehow featured in his plays as a special tribute to him. There were two scenes from his plays performed on the night too.

What a magical evening it was! Many thanks to McGrorys and all at the Macklin Festival for being such wonderful hosts.

Hi from L.A.!!

We've been having a really great time out here performing at the L.A. Irish film festival.
http://www.lairishfilm.com

The festival has been a fantastic success and much credit is due to Lisa McLaughlin (our lifelong friend from Malin), who is the festival founder and director.

"The Eclipse", a fabulous new movie shot in Cork which stars Aidan Quinn, opened the festival and we performed at the after party. It was fantastic beginning to this 5 day festival which has had highlight after highlight.

The Gabriel Byrne documentary was brilliant and to the audience's delight, he was at the screening and did a Q&A afterwards.

On closing night we performed to an audience of 300 people in the historical Aero Theatre on Montana. This was followed by the closing film "Da', which was shot in Ireland 20 years ago and stars Martin Sheen. Director Matt Clarke and producer Bill Greenblot were present and Matt did a Q&A after the show.

It was an amazing experience for us to come here and we were very warmly welcomed by everyone. Our music seems to have been a hit, we sold out our cds on closing night!!
And we've already been invited back for next year....we wont have to think too long about whether to accept that invitation!

Thats it from us, tomorrow we jump on a plane and it back to Ireland for us!

Hello there!

We are delighted to announce 2 upcoming dates with American chanteuse Uni (stage name 'Uni and her Ukelele').

Last month, we were approached by North-West music promoters 'Beatnik Soul' and asked if we would be interested in joining musical forces with the lovely Uni. After hearing her album, we jumped at the chance: The album features lots of harp, harmonies and strings...all of which is right up our street!

The first will take place in the Persian Bar on Wednesday the 26th August. This is a free event . Kick off time will be 10.30 and support on the night will be fellow Maliner, Martin Smyth, who will be performing a selection of self-penned songsl.

The second gig is on in Cafe Del Mondo, Derry on Thursday August 27th. Kick off time is 9pm and support on the night will be Amanda Healy, Maya Frost and Tina McLaughlin. Entry for this event is £12, which includes food . Numbers are limited to 60 so early booking is advisable: Contact Cathy Taylor on 07881916809.

In the meantime, please check out Uni's myspace to have a listen to her wonderful tracks and experience her loveliness in advance:

We are truly delighted to be joining Uni for these dates and really hope to see you there

Best wishes,

Gawa Fusion have been and gone and without a doubt, their trip was an absolute success. Our joint Earagail Arts Festival gigs were very well attended and there was amazing feedback about them. Gawa Fusion also gigged in Sandinos with Reggae musician Natty Wailer and did a little acoustic concert in Cafe Donagh (Carndonagh), both of which went down a storm. Thanks to all who attended and made Gawa Fusion's first gigs outside Morocco very special.

However on Monday the 13th they did a very special gig that wasn't publicised as it happened only at the last minute. Shane O'Curry from the anti-war movement in Derry came to the Persian bar gig and was blown away. Gawa Fusion being Arabic, Shane thought it would be amazing to have them play at a demonstration at Free Derry Corner against the current demolitions in Palestine.
13th July 2009 was a day of international solidarity with the Palestinian people of East Jerusalem whose homes have been demolished by the IOF (Israeli Occupation Force).
At Free Derry corner a symbolic "tent village" was constructed, along with a cardboard representation of the wall that Israel has built through Palestinian land wrecking groves of olive trees and cutting off farmers from their land.
Gawa Fusion played as the cardboard wall was symbolically demolished - mostly by the children of Derry's anti-war protesters.
For images and more about this event, visit:http://veryderry.com/db/location.php?pano=60

Many thanks to Gawa Fusion for taking the time to go and provide music for such a worthy cause. Their music enhanced the event and therefore created more awareness about these atrocities that are happening in Jerusalem.
