We had a great time at Forward Music Festival. Amble Down is like a family. We are forever grateful to our dear friend Kyle who faithfully and fantastically runs our label and the FMF folks for making this possible. Below are some articles about us, the show, Forward Music Festival, etc., should you be short on reading material.

Thanks to everyone who bought our CD or came to shows. You are very kind and generous.

We are playing some cool shows coming up. On August 30th we are playing at the Turf Club for House of Mercy Presents. House of Mercy (http://www.houseofmercy.org) is a cool place, Kid Dakota (http://www.myspace.com/kiddakota) is a way cool band. It should be a grand evening all around.

We are also playing in Menomonie at the Mabel Tainter (http://www.mabeltainter.com/) with We Are the Willows (http://www.myspace.com/wearethewillowsmn) and Kristen Korkowski (http://www.myspace.com/kristenkorkowski). I really like these bands and the Mabel Tainter is a wonderful place to hear/play music.

Amble Down is putting on a showcase show at Forward Music Festival in Madison. So awesome. Overture Center (Rotunda stage).
7:00PM - The Cloud Hymn
7:45PM - We Are The Willows
8:30PM - Meridene
9:15PM - The Wars of 1812
10:00PM -The Daredevil Christopher Wright
Overture Center - Rotunda stage - http://www.overturecenter.com/venuerotundastage.htm
Forward Music Festival - http://fmf09.com/

Also, the three of us will be back in Eau Claire at the UWEC Cabin on October 3rd.

We will probably take a bit of a break from shows in October and November to record the next set of songs.

Pretty much everything I write seems pretentious, like we are rock stars updating droves of fans on our musical lives. Try and ignore that if you can.

Thanks,

John

Wide

I know if my mind could be quiet
A sound would come along
Oh God, will You come calm the seas of
This lonely one, this one

Show me the place where this life is just a day
Show me the day where the past will fall away
Come tell my eyes to be open, open wide

To be wide, to be wide
Remember the night that storm raged
You called out to me
Remember when I said “not this time”
Stay away this time

God, I know You’ve been near the whole time
But God, sometimes You seem hard to find
These days my pride has been making me blind

Show me the place where this life is just a day
Show me the day where the past will fall away
Come tell my eyes to be open, open wide
To be wide, to be wide

Moon

Pull the blankets tight just for the night
Don’t let get inside
Wrapped up the dark I feel apart
Needing a fresh start

When the moon runs its course too slow
Then I run where I should not go
When the moon shines across the snow
In my mind winding winds I blow

My worried mind has brought such heavy thoughts
Waiting to be caught
The light inside the window brings it on
Waiting for the dawn

You so long ago
Came all alone
You offer a hope
Comfort the cold

When the moon runs its course so slow
Then I run where I should not go
When the moon shines across the snow
In my mind winding winds I blow

Lines

These are just lines to try to describe love
“The look in your eyes” and all of the above

Clever lines fall short, every time
You, my love, I can’t describe but I will try

A streetlamp shines on a tree and I can see every leaf
You’re the light, the tree is me
You will glow through this night

Clever lines fall short every time
You, my love, I can’t describe but I will try
Clever lines fall short every time
You, my love, I can’t describe but I will try

To Myself

Before you lay down, before your chest the mattress found
Your heart is somewhere so unsound

Is it all in your head?
Are you safer in bed?

Along your bedside, you feel the night has crept inside
And sadness leaves no place to hide

Is it all in your head?
Are you safer in bed?
Why carry your debt?

All you heavy laden, burdened, and oppressed
Love has come to lay your weary heart to rest

Some Years

I’ll go run to the woods
A friend in the trees I will find
Standing together we would
Lift heartbroken arms to the sky

When did you last not feel so sad?
Not feel so bad?
I won’t pretend, I’m not sure when or how long it’s been
It’s the brightest it’s been in some years
It’s the brightest it’s been

Staring into the lake
The darkest green colored night
A rippled bend in my face
Suddenly seeming just right

When did you last not feel so sad?
Not feel so bad?
I won’t pretend, I’m not sure when or how long it’s been
When did you last not feel so sad?
Not feel so bad?
I won’t pretend, I’m not sure when or how long it’s been
It’s the brightest it’s been in some years
It’s the brightest it’s been in some years
It’s the brightest it’s been in some years
It’s the brightest it’s been in some years
It’s been some years now
It’s been some years now
It’s been some years now
It’s been some years now

Slow Tide

So slow, the ocean’s hand
Moon light, a moving band

Cold sand, the tide a pen
Softly writes in sweeping bends
Hold my feet gently and then retreat
I hear the sound of the tide whispering
With every drowning word
It offers barely a sigh, it softly sings
A song so long unheard
It tells of Him, a quiet hymn

To the Postmodern Man

Burn all of your bridges with nothing left behind
Who needs reason or rhyme?
Erase all the pages, there is no law to find
Everyone’s is fine, everyone’s but mine

Well my friend how can it be
That I’m wrong if there is no morality?
The difference between you and me
Is that I do my best to practice what I preach

What is right for me is not right for you?
Is nothing left that’s true?
But when you are harmed you walk right out the door
And justice must be restored, justice applies once more

Well my friend how can it be
That I’m wrong if there is no morality?
The difference between you and me
Is that I do my best to practice what I preach

Oh my friend, you feel unjustly treated now?
Well that’s the game
And it’s hard to play when you have thrown out all the rules
And only you’re behind the reins
Now don’t call names cause in this fight I’m just as right as you
Or so you said, or so you said

Coming Through

The clouds seem to be lingering
Their cold stare covers me

But I see, I see You
Coming, coming through

The dark seems to be burying
The dull lights don’t do a thing

But I see, I see You
Coming, coming through
But I see, I see You
Coming, coming through

Begin Again

Swimming darkness through the glass
As I watch the evening pass
From night to mind tonight I find

In their eyes I will find Your design
Into mine You will shine
In their eyes I will find Your design
Into mine You will shine, You will shine

Mingle moon with warm headlights
Distant stars and dashing lines
Are all I need to see tonight

In Your eyes I will find my design
Into mine You will shine
In Your eyes I will find my design
Into mine You will shine, You will shine

I begin, I begin
I begin again, I begin again

Blood and Wood

I am not beautiful to see but this tree
Carries the one whose death set you free, can’t you see?
That pinned to this cross is a man from above
And within my wood there are blood stains of love

Oh, oh no
Clouds covered sun, blocking the light
Rocks split the earth was shaken with might
Surely this day a man of God died
On wood, wooden beams lifted upright
This man is the way, the truth, and the life, the life

Love had its way today
Love had its way today
Love had its way today
Love had its way today

Love had its way today
Blood mixed with wood can save

The Ending

The highs and lows, my wooden boat is still afloat
I barely row and on I go, the wind You blow
The wind You blow

I know the ending
But I’m still pretending
That you’re not here and I can’t feel at home

And when it seems that I must sink You come to me
Across the waves, up from Your grave to calm the sea
To calm the sea

I love, I love You
I love, I love You
I love, I love You
I love, I love You

Paul made a pretty good list of his favorite local songs last year and this year (check it out on the Cranes & Crows blog) so I thought I would make a list of favorite songs which are in some way associated with Eau Claire. They are in no particular order.

DeYarmond Edison - Epoch - from the band's unreleased EP - I don't think I could say enough about how important this band is to me. When the piano and drums come in, and when ....Vernon.... gets higher at the end, awesome. The detailed production this track sounds incredible. You can download this track for free from the band's myspace page.

Megafaun - Drains - from "Bury the Square - I love the lyrics of this song. This song reminds of something from Phish's "The Story of the Ghost" which is an incredible (ignore the pictures of hippies that come to your mind and buy that record. It is full of excellent songwriting and you will not be disappointed). These guys have made good doing their own thing after DeYarmond.

The Daredevil Christopher Wright - The Stewardess - from "In Deference to a Broken Back" - It will be a good day when this record comes out. Just please wait for it and then buy it. This is a great song, just like every other DC Wright song.

Laarks - The S Stood for Science - from their forthcoming record - I always liked this song when I saw these guys live but never knew the name until they finally threw it up on their myspace page. I love the climbing bass line parts, the rocking part with the louder guitars and vocals, and the part where the drums go to a sort of half time. Everyone loves Brian Moen's drumming (myself included) but the rest of the members (Ian, Kyle, and Zach) deserve a lot more love than they the tend to get whenever anyone writes about Laarks. The last minute of this song is fantastic. See them live because it's rockin' and buy this record when it comes out.

Fine - My Attire - from "The Ends Are Meeting Up Again" - This is now-defunct band of Mike Noyce, guitarist for Bon Iver. Paul was also in this band because Paul is everyone's band including about half the bands on this list (Fine, The Gentle Guest, Cranes & Crows, Meridene, Wake Up Poland). This is a great song and it always gets stuck in my head.

Meridene - The Hills - from the forthcoming "You're Not Pretty, You're Worse" - I just watched Meridene play this song live and it was grand. I love the lyrics of this tune and I promise you will love the Death Cab-ish piano and the ending. Go check these guys out when they play their CD release show(s) (and hey you can see the Laarks too) and go preorder their album from ambledown.com (full details on their MySpace blog) and if you don't trust me then stream the whole new album at virb.com/meridene.

The Gentle Guest - Tightly Woven Webs (The song "Longfellow" is a close second) - from the EP "Out Little Ruckus" - The overdubbed vocals and guitar make for one of the coolest openings for a song and the simple guitar and vocals of the second half round out the rest of a great tune. I really like the way the guitar kind of stumbles to the finish line at the end of the song.. This EP is a far cry from the rousing and romping music Eric Rykal has been making these days but I believe if you order the Gentle Guests new full length (which you should) from Amble Down records you may get a free copy of "Our Little Ruckus."

Cranes & Crows - Ruins - From "Blame Winter" - Paul is a fantastic songwriter and although I may seem biased you should still listen to all his music. Notable parts of greatness in this song include: the opening swells, the deep piano chords behind the banjo, the vocals-only portion, and the ending build (essentially the entire song I suppose). I love that the song is long and remains interesting, and I even love that crazy production-playing-part-of-the-song-backwards thing at the end.

Wake Up Poland, It's Nine O'Clock - Chapter 8 - from "The Two A.M. Sessions - Again I sing Paul Brandt's praises (no pun intended). This whole song is great. The lyrics on this whole record are great and the songwriting is excellent. Paul and Phil Grey recorded a song at 2 A.M. every Saturday night for 15 weeks and wound up with a grand collection of really well-written tunes. For your good go download their record for free from the link on their myspace page.

Tani Alyssa - Inside the Lines - Again I'm biased for a number of reasons but I still love this song. I love the simple ascending pattern and the rhythmic change for the chorus is great. I also love the repetition in the chorus lyrics with a varying melody. I'm really into ending-chorus-type-things that only happen once. Check out all of Tani's MySpace songs.

Bon Iver - everything
