Not many people know about the country of Bulgaria. With just almost 8 million people in population and over 1million people living abroad, it always seems to be one of those places you pass by and never take the time to care about. Myself being born and lived in Bulgaria for a number of years, I find it very alarming at the lack of concern the countries government has towards its most precious citizens, those being children. Its as if they have turn their backs to their neglect and poor living conditions, with a self assuring idea that being an orphan or a gypsy aka Roma ethnicity means you will never amount to anything in Bulgarian society. Countless amounts of money is donated by various governments from all over Europe to aid these children, but with the extreme amounts of corruption within not just the Bulgarian government but the country itself, it seems only pennies end up in the hands of the children's aid.

Slowly private groups have been helping Bulgaria's children, but help comes small and slow. I have been wanting to get involved within this area of helping children for a long time now, but had never been able to find the appropriate outlet and organization to take part of. Recently I watched a extremely disturbing documentary filmed by BBC called " Bulgaria's Abandoned Children " http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9176914173325307126

The film was nauseating, and focuses on a orphanage who's tenants are mostly severely disabled Roma children, who are neglected and slowly before your eyes vanishing and left to parish. After the airing of the film last fall the public outrage and the support of people around the world gave word to UNICEF, who stepped in and helped the children in extremely life changing ways. UNICEF has also been working with the UN to pass new laws within the Bulgarian government to aid the countries children, but like anything done in Bulgaria this will be a battle and take many years to accomplish. While not all orphanages in Bulgaria are in conditions as horrid as the video, they still are in a great deal of need for supplies, food, beds, and so much more the list would be endless.

To make a long story short, I have decided to take an internship position with One Heart Bulgaria a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Bulgarian orphans. I will be working with a company cordinator to create a personal project, and it will mainly be in the area of infants. Also I have been speaking with them about going to work in an orphanage in Bulgaria hopefully next Spring, working with older children and teaching them English Art, Music with the help of my boyfriend David. I will also be providing the staff with needed support on dealing with situations and learning effective methods of positive re-enforcement and stimulation for the children.

Many of us see problems in the world, and get discouraged feeling as if they are so small " how can I do anything ". It just takes one person doing a small thing to make up the bigger picture of change. I am not asking people for money with this blog, I am just simply asking people to open their eyes to the world and find one small and tiny way to help. What a fun weekend! Cant get into too much detail, but 3 days stuck in a car with these two guys was defo some good laughts. Me and Spor went to play up in Vancouver and Victoria Canada... burrrr was a bit cold, but we did have a few much needed snowball fights. I decided to take some photos along the way, and I am still waiting on all the photos from the shows that we played from the other people to post. I am glad we didnt get arrested at the border :X, and Spor didnt get deported back on the way to the U.S. So I would say this mission was a success. The Vancouver show was amazing, thank you to the Slimpickins for putting together such a great event, and to Kali in Victoria congrats on a wonderful 1st show! Thanks to everyone that came out - myself, Spor and Aker had an amazing time.
