Although I don't usually pass on a forwarded email like this one that was sent to me below, I think it is important enough to post.
***
Friends, Compatriots, Fellow-lamenters,
We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt since the announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. We believe that this terrible decision has surpassed mere partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farce on the part of a pandering and rudderless Presidential candidate that has a real possibility of becoming fact.
Perhaps like us as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palin and her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to for ourselves and for our present or future daughters. To date, she is against sex education, birth control, the pro-choice platform, environmental protection, alternative energy development, freedom of speech (as mayor she wanted to censor certain books and attempted to fire the librarian who stood against her), gun control, and the separation of church and state. This is to say nothing of her complete lack of real preparation to become the second-most-powerful person on the planet.
We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, a mother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solely as a rash, incompetent, and all together devastating choice for Vice President. Ms. Palin's political views are in every way a slap in the face to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers so fiercely fought for, and from whom we've so demonstrably benefited.
First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does not demonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumed that the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win over women voters. We want to disagree, publicly.
Therefore, we invite you to write to the email address below and include a short, succinct message about why you, as a woman living in this country, do not support this candidate as second-in-command for our nation. Please include your name (last initial is fine), age, and place of residence. We will post your responses on a blog called 'Women Against Sarah Palin,' which we intend to publicize as widely as possible. Please send us your reply at your earliest convenience; the greater the volume of responses we receive, the stronger our message will be. Thank you for your time and action.
Sincerely,
Quinn Latimer and Lyra Kilston New York, NY

Everything in my life that's been interesting in the past year has to do with roller derby. Practices, partying with the girls, fundraisers, crazy bouts, even snagging an awesome referee for a boyfriend (or vice versa)...School, on the other hand, has frequently failed to become a priority in that time. Lately I've had to cut back on skating in order to complete my academic requirements, and that has made me really depressed. Intense workouts and strategic drills and fun scrimmages continue, but I'm stuck in front of my laptop with books and papers spread in a chaos around me. Well now I just want to say a few words about my graduate school career as its conclusion draws near. I delivered my thesis on Monday, I present it next Friday, then one more week of my internship, and I cruise down the aisle to pick up my diploma. I imagine somewhere along the line, relief will come and I won't feel so stressed.
My studies have driven me crazy on many occasion. I can't hardly type this blog without automatically checking for correct punctuation and editing passive voice sentences. On a few random days I actually broke down in tears and could not be consoled, thinking myself a failure because I couldn't perfect transitions between paragraphs, or wrap my head around intervention principles, procedures, and outcome measures. Feedback from my professor always made me want to quit and only encouragement from the people I care about the most kept me going. The homework sucks for sure. As for therapy itself, I enjoy that a lot more. I get burnt out treating kids sometimes; I love them but they're exhausting, and sessions remain homogenous for the most part. I like working with adults who have had strokes or brain injuries or other acquired communication disorders because helping them improves their quality of life, and sessions can always change. I appreciate the flexibility and creativity that treating adults allows. And the elderly population in general is thrilled to have someone take an active interest in their well-being, at least 99% of the time. During my internship this winter I felt particularly proud and fulfilled treating patients in this demographic because everything I said and did had a positive impact and made a difference in thier lives. I also cried when I thought that wasn't the case, when I thought I couldn't help, or when I had clients pass away.
I'm excited to begin a new job at two skilled nursing facilities, beginning only two days after I graduate. They are ideal environments for my Clinical Fellowship Year--and the benefits/compensation will support my extracurricular endeavors! I can't wait to fully devote myself to derby once more. In the meantime, I extend an invitation to everyone to attend the commencement ceremony taking place 5 pm on Friday, June 13th at McArthur Court. And of course, you can count on some kind of crazy celebration to follow :)

Current mood: crappy
Category: Writing and Poetry
The weather outside matches my mood. In an effort to avoid homework and wallow for awhile, here are some old poems I found and typed up. Because misery does so love company...
Untitled She's on the floor and crying hard, she thinks of all she has to lose. Her three children are certainly worth the price of some cuts and a bruise. At times she thinks he truly loves her when he kisses her and says good night, but she remembers how he's said it before to someone else, and held her tight. "Just keep on ignoring, that's what I'll do. God understands, knows what I've been through." Then she won't defend him, won't care where God sends him, her triumph is finally due.
Awakening Thank you so much for the enlightenment you fucking asshole you dick You've opened my eyes with your sincerity and truth you piece of shit you bastard I am a better person for the knowledge you've imparted may the heavens bless you you poor excuse for a man because I am now wise
A Riddle It comes slowly, never at once falling...falling...falling... Sometimes we leave it alone and watch it melt out of our lives after is has fallen...fallen...fallen... Soemtimes we trample over it, crushing its existence the minute it's seen so we don't have to fall...fall...fall... Sometimes we pack it up. It's securely condensed to save for later, to treasure for always, when we realize we already fell...fell...fell...

By the way, in case anyone is wondering, I'm doing fine. I don't really feel the need to talk about school or work or anything, derby has just kind of taken over. If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask. Otherwise, I'll just assume that skating--the most exciting aspect of my life--is all anyone really wants to hear about :)
