.....but it's us, not you, I swear. To misquote what looks to be one of the shittiest movies ever, "We are sooooo into you!" We just get distracted by shiny objects and pretty girls, and the next thing ya know it's four months down the road..... So things have been goin' pretty swimmingly around here. Even though the economy sucks, people still like to drink beer and shake their ass, so we're still working a bunch. We've played some pretty big gigs along the way lately. We had the opening slot at the Jerry Jeff Walker gig, which we're still beaming over. Here's a good shot of Eric and Jerry Jeff chillin' at Smith's Olde Bar: Original gangster fo' sho'. It's like Dr. Dre to Snoop Dogg, passin' the baton. Nice. We also did the big Independent Music World Series gig back in September. It was the contest to see who the best unsigned band in the Southeast. It was really fun, we played well, we then destroyed the open bar and checked all the other acts out. The band Act of Congress outta Birmingham wound up winning, which I feel is due in large part to their violin player being ridiculously good-looking. Even the straight ladies in the crowd were like, "She's pretty hot." Agreed. We told Stu to get a boob job before the show. We'd be a shoo-in then, right? But he had these excuses, y' know, "What'll my co-workers think?", and "I don't wanna be a woman." Pretty lame. We'd like to blame a boobless Stu for our not winning. It makes the rest of us feel better. We got to play the big PirateFest out on Tybee Island in October. Really fun, everyone dresses up like Jack Sparrow and parades around the island acting pirate-y. Because of weather and various sound issues we wound up being the only band that played. Marshall Tucker was scheduled, but he wussed out. He was scared of the T' Wrecks. There were around 2,000 people there. Seriously. Check it: Hearing 2,000 folks cheer for something you've just done is an indescribable feeling. It's hard to stay composed at times like those. I didn't even know that the video screen was up behind us until I saw this picture. Blissfully unaware! It's a nice way to go through life. There's so many of us on screen, in perpetuity! Apparently it was hat day in Train Wrecks-land. I love that shot. We participated in a coupla of the Statts-Williams benefits. Those guys got senselessly shot after a local show. Shook up the community pretty badly. But the benefit at The Jinx was a truly special event, with lots of love and positivity floatin' 'round. Here's a coupla pics: I have no idea what "Burn 1" means. People tell me it's kinda funny. I wouldn't know ... We've also played some cool local shows. Hit The JINX a few times. Here's anotha pic:
Also hit up the Gram Parsons Tribute and Guitar Pull in Waycross. Got a coupla pics from there: So yeah, things are a'ight 'round here. We've got a lot of cool shows comin' up. We're in Macon, Columbia, Charlotte, Atlanta, Hilton Head, Bluffton, Charleston, and of course Savannah, among other spots. Please check our tour dates to see where we're gonna be. We're also workin' on the new record, gettin' the new songs together. Should be a stunnah! We got some good tunes comin' down the pipe. Stay tuned! We love you all! Marquez

Hey, kids!
Jim Reed over at the Connect wrote a REAL nice article about us. Talkin' 'bout the Jerry Jeff Walker show, the big Independent Music World Series finals in ATL on the 11th, and about things gettin' bigger and better in general. We're pretty excited.
Currently Jason's somewhere's in Texas, I'm in Austin right now (musician's heaven - seein' the Toadies @ Stubb's tomorrow, Squeeze and Fastball @ La Zona Rosa on Friday) and Eric and Stu are back in the SAV tellin' Hanna to go fuck herself. She's scared, I can tell. That bitch.
Here's a link to the article: www.connectsavannah.com
And here's the article in full, in case the link expires. Read on!
IT'S BEEN JUST A LITTLE OVER A YEAR since local "roots-a-billy" band The Train Wrecks released their debut CD, Whiskey & War.
During that time, the hard-charging quartet of Jason Bible, Markus Kuhlmann, Eric Dunn and Stuart Harmening have sold over 1,200 copies of that album on their own, and kept up the frenetic pace of their fabled live gigs in bars, clubs and restaurants scattered throughout Savannah, Tybee and the surrounding area. Lately, however, they've been expanding not only their repertoire of twangy, rocking originals and Americana covers, but their touring range as well.
Frontman Bible says that even though it's taken the band a few years to get to this stage, on some level, all of them hoped the day would come when they'd be hitting the road and making new fans.
"I'd like to think that was inevitable," says the singer-songwriter. "We've (finally) got a van now and that meant a bigger commitment on everyone's part. Currently we're playing Charleston, Bluffton, Beaufort and some other smaller markets like Statesboro a couple times a month. We've also played a bit in Jacksonville. We want to stay within a four or five hour driving radius, because just going back and forth to Atlanta in that van costs around $160."
The Train Wrecks That $160 must have seemed like a very small price to pay for the opportunity to open for legendary Tx. songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker ("Mr. Bojangles") in front of a large crowd at one of that city's most prestigious outdoor venues, the Botanical Gardens.
It seems The Train Wrecks beat out a large number of Atlanta-based alt.country and folk acts for this coveted gig by wowing the show's promoter months before with a memorable performance on River Street during the 2008 St. Patrick's Day festivities.
"We thought nothing of that show," explains drummer Kuhlmann. "But it turns out the guy who handles their Summer Concert Series stuck around for the full gig and we didn't even know it. He called us a few months later and asked if we'd open for Jerry Jeff. After we all fell over and dropped our pants, we were like, fuck yeah we'll do it! I mean, that's a major gig! John Hiatt was there the week before us, Lucinda Williams was there the week after us, and then they had Buddy Guy."
The band members all agree that show was one of the most memorable —and well received— they have played to date.
"It was a great experience," Kuhlmann elaborates. "We walked out on stage and there were 2,000 people waiting for us to start. The rush was unbelievable. But we pulled it off. We sold a lot of merch and afterwards in the crowd, people said we sounded great. Then, Jason and Eric went out with Jerry Jeff at Smith's Olde Bar that night and drank him under the table! (laughs) It was a great night and a great situation."
"I hope it turns into something bigger. It seems like more people are getting on board lately — more than any other band I've been in, and I've been doing this for a while."
--------------- Here's a clip of The Train Wrecks playing their version of Bruce Springsteen's "The Ghost of Tom Joad" live at The Jinx. (A studio recording of this tune can be found on their debut CD.):
--------------- There's no way to accurately predict whether or not the band's stock will continue to rise, however, one thing is certain — their next Atlanta appearance would seem to be a pivotal moment of sorts in their quest for greater notoriety.
In a development that —to a man— the group seems genuinely agog at, The Train Wrecks have been named finalists in the Independent Music World Series, a nationwide competition designed to discover, publicize and reward the best unsigned musical acts in the USA.
Sponsored by Disc Makers (one of the largest and best-known domestic manufacturers of custom-pressed CDs and DVDs), the contest is open to any artist or group which plays original music, and whose members are not currently signed to a major label (or an affiliate imprint of a major). The country is broken down into four distinct geographical regions, with each region holding its own showcase, and crowning a solitary winner.
The Train Wrecks have been named one of the six finalists for the entire Southeast (which includes 12 states), and will compete against the other five acts on Thursday, Sept. 11 at mid-town Atlanta's music venue Vinyl.
The Train Wrecks Besides bragging rights and the nationwide press that can come from winning such a competition, the group stands to walk away with over $50,000 worth of brand-new musical and recording equipment, including having their next album (which they're currently writing songs for) pressed for free.
Bassist Eric Dunn says everyone in the band was amazed to learn they'd made it to the highest level of a competition that had close to 3,000 entries in this region alone.
"Stuart entered us back in early June on a lark, and then first, we heard we'd made it into the top 200. So we were Semi-Finalists. Then a few months later, we learn we're in the top six."
Harmening, too, could hardly believe their album had emerged as a standout among such stiff competition.
"When I heard we'd made it to the final six acts in the whole Southeast, needless to say, I was stoked," he offers enthusiastically. "We get a thousand bucks and some assorted prizes just for going, but the exposure we'll get is pretty incredible."
"We'd probably do it for free, because it seems like agents, promoters and producers come to these things to sniff out promising new acts. It's worth taking the time to go up there just for that."
Bible admits all the gear they might win would come in very handy for any working band, but he's most excited at the potential of walking away with something less tangible, but potentially much more beneficial to a group such as his.
"If we win," says the energetic vocalist, "we also get the use of an independent A & R rep for free for a full year. It would be great for us to have someone to help shop our songs to TV and film producers."
Kuhlmann says their group doesn't sound much like any of the other finalists they'll be appearing alongside in the high-stakes showcase.
"There's one group up against us from Birmingham, Al., and they kind of have a Nickel Creek thing going on. Then there's a sort of 'lounge metal' act out of New Orleans, two rappers and a soul group. It's a pretty diverse crowd, actually."
Each act will have their work cut out for them, as they have a maximum of 20 minutes on stage to wow the judges and the crowd — which makes it very hard for an eclectic group such as The Train Wrecks to fully convey the totality of their talent.
"We'll only be able to play five or six songs, tops," Kuhlmann says with a discernible sense of frustration. "Some of our tunes are almost six minutes long, but some are a lot shorter. So, we're trying to mix it up a little bit. I just want to play as much in the time we're allowed, and demonstrate all we can do. We need to make sure we show off the unique abilities of everyone in the band."
"And," he adds with a chuckle, "we want to look as professional as possible — like we know what we're doing."
The Train Wrecks For his part, Bible says that a recent road trip to see his hero Bruce Springsteen in concert has only reinforced what he already felt about his chosen profession: Namely, that integrity and dedication are the two keys to succeeding in the world of roots-based rock and roll. He's hoping his band will be able to display both of those attributes at this competition.
"The Boss show changed my life," he gushes. "It was so exuberant, and the energy was just so amazing. That's what I aspire to do: go around giving people hope and putting a smile on their face. Whether it's for two people or two thousand. As for this show, we'll try to kick 'em in the ass, and just see what happens from there."
Regardless of the final outcome of this high-profile contest, Kuhlmann says it's just another step in his band's evolution.
"Even if we don't win, it'll be a great opportunity. We are a bar band in the sense that we play in a lot of bars, but I don't think that's a true representation of what we're capable of. If we were in more 'concert situations', playing shorter shows of nothing but our best material, we could just kill 'em."
Harmening agrees, adding that while he's happy The Train Wrecks have been taped to take part in such an event, it's just an unexpected bonus. For him, the real prize is simply getting to share their own original material with an ever-growing audience.
"We're just trying to keep our music as real as possible and hopefully, good things will follow," he says. "If shows like this are stepping stones to another level, that's awesome. But first and foremost, we're musicians who love to play. That's the bottom line. Opportunities like this are cool, but we're gonna continue to do what we do whether they come up or not."

Hey, kids!
Things are hoppin' 'round here. We played our big show with Jerry Jeff Walker a coupla weeks ago. It was at the Botanical Gardens in Midtown Atlanta. Awesome place, awesome stage, sold-out crowd of 2,000 folks. It was nuts. Way too much fun. Jerry Jeff was ever the gentleman. Jason & Eric even went out drinkin' with him after the show. I'm told them boys shut down Smith's Olde Bar that nite. Jerry drank 'em under the table, and he's 64 years old!!! His secret: No brown liquor. Don't tell anybody.... Final score: Jerry Jeff - 1 The Train Wrecks - 0
We just got some real exciting news. Stu entered us into some contest put on by Disc Makers, a company that manufactures the final product when bands get their CDs made. We all kinda thought, whatever, nothin'll come of it. Well, smack my ass, we're in the finals of this thang, with a chance to win all kindsa cool shit!!! Studio equipment, TV & movie publishing type stuff, new instruments, MONEY, exposure, etc. We're all crappin' kittens over here. We play with five other bands at Vinyl in Atlanta, GA on Sept. 11th (kinda nasty date, but what can ya do?). It starts at 8PM. Here's a link to read about what's happening.
http://www.discmakers.com/imws/
We were picked from a list of semifinalists over 200 bands long, so we're feelin' pretty good about ourselves right now. The Train Wrecks' self-esteem is soaring! We're good enough, smart enough, and goddammit, people like us. So there. UPDATE: Found out from one of the higher-ups @ Disc Makers that there were almost 2,500 applicants for this contest in the southeast region alone, and we made it to the top 6. Holy crap.
In other news, we've got a shiny new website!
http://thetrainwrecksband.com/
If only I knew how to make changes to it! How wonderful life would be! I need to have a sit-down with our webmistress and find out how to make the verbiage say different stuff. I'm one lesson away from keepin' that bitch up-to-date!!! Keep your fingers crossed. Ned is our web designer. She's very lovely and talented. If you'd like to get in touch with her about doing some web design for your own use, hit her up on the interwebs:
www.maneatingflower.com
Very cool. In related lovely and talented news, that cool-ass woodcut on the front pages of all our websites was done by Jennifer Jenkins. She's been a friend of the band for a while, and did the piece pro bono for us. I think that means free. We look pretty studly in woodcut! Nice work. She's also very tall and hot. It's yet another win-win situation. We've got hand-made prints available for sale at the show. It's, like, real art, people. You should have one on yr wall. Jay Cupples has three on his wall in a row, like Warhol. Here's a big picture:
Or not. Why can't I put pics in here? I'm a dumb-ass. Anyhoo, hit her up at her website if you want some mighty fine art.

And finally, I've been recording some stuff over at SCAD's sound design dept. with my good friend Nathan Hagar. He's a talented sound engineer as well as singer/guitarist himself, and we've had a lot of fun puttin' some tunes of mine to tape. Or hard drive.... Whatever. I've got 15 or 16 tunes that I'm workin' on, so go to my myspace page for updates. I'm sure several will wind up as Train Wrecks tunes. I've got drum & guitar tracks down now with more studio time comin' up the end of this week....

I think that's my page. A lot of letters and numbers there. Goodness. And ask to be my friend! I like friends....
Thanks for keepin' our recent shows rockin'. We've had a lot of fun playin' for you guys lately, and things seem to be gettin' bigger and better. Pretty cool.
We love you guys! For serial.....

Hello, peoples....
Haven't typed much out for you kids lately. Don't really have any excuses for that. None that any self-respecting procrastinator wouldn't scoff at. Drinkin' cheap wine, chasin' skirts, playin' too loud, etc. Blah, blah, blah. You know what we're up to. Sorry we spilled stuff on yr rug......
But things seem to keep gettin' better around here. We're gearing up for our big show opening for Jerry Jeff Walker in Atlanta @ the Midtown Botanical Gardens. He wrote "Mr. Bojangles", and apparently wears the biggest cowboy hat in the music business. Both things to be mighty proud of, I think. That happens on July 18th. Tix are $35 well-spent dollars. Check out the venue's website: concertsinthegarden.org It's kind of a big deal, y'know? If we weren't so busy tryin' to be cool about it, we'd probably all be crappin' our pants right now.
We've also been tapped to give tribute to the late, great Gram Parsons at the annual Guitar Pull & Gram Parsons Tribute in Waycross, Ga. (Gram's hometown). It's a pretty cool setup, with a bunch of bands playing over two days, with each set consisting of at least a 1/3 songs that were written and/or played by Gram. Along with his solo stuff, he was a member of the Flying Burrito Brothers, as well as The Byrds when they produced the country-rock epiphany "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". He's widely considered the father of alt.country, and this is just a small way for us to pay off a little of our debt to him. We've rehearsed five or six of his tunes already, and they sound real nice. In other news, WE FUCKING REHEARSED! I know, I know, I'm as freaked out as you guys are. We try to practice once a year, and this year we practiced two days in a row, so we're good on the practicin' until 2011, I think. We're playing @ 7PM on Fri., September 26.
We also just found out about a coupla big local gigs. We're playing the annual Tybee PirateFest this year, alongside Marshall Tucker.... Marshall FUCKIN' Tucker!!!! "Can't You See?", "Amy", all that shit. Pretty exciting, no? That's on Oct 11th. Go get yr pirate costume now. It's never too early. Plus, we're gonna open for a live performance (w/ real human beings) of the cult classic movie "Rocky Horror Picture Show". At the Lucas Theater..... No, excuse me, the Lucas FUCKIN' Theater!!!! That's REALLY exciting. Perhaps the most amazing performance space ever. Haven't gotten the dates firmed up yet, but we'll let ya know.....
We get to play another show with the indescribable Joe Buck of Hank Williams III's band. Here's an extremely kid-friendly link to check out his whole thang: myspace.com/joebuckyourselfmotherfucker Jesus, Joe. Lighten up with all the goddamn swearin'. That's happenin' up in Charleston, SC, at the Black Cart. Sep. 12th. Kinda tentative, so keep checkin' back with us. And, fellas - bring a date w/ you. Joe'll scare the livin' shit out of her. His teeth made one girl faint last time....
Our great photographer friends Marti Jeffers and Craig Tanner have some pages/videos with our music/ugly mugs on 'em. We love these guys so much and they've been a great help to the band every step of the way. And they're amazing artists. It'a a win-win, folks. A definite win-win situation..... Here's some links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UwQJx09D9g http://martijeffers.com/myview/ http://www.craigtannercreative.com/lightdiary/?paged=4
And as usual, we're all over the place here in town. The band's at the usual joints. I'm (Markus) still doing two open mics a week (Mon. @ Murphy's, Wed. @ Molly's), along with Monday evening solo gigs in City Market (4:30- 7:30) and some Sundays out @ Huc-A-Poo's. Jason's been doin' a bunch of solo gigs, some @ Bernie's out on Tybee. Eric's been playin' w/ Kurtis & Kody, Tubby Love, and Justin Boykin all over the place. We've got some merch now, too. CD's, hats, shirts, etc. So there you go.....We like to be busy, and hate day jobs.
Check out the new Band of Horses record. Especially "Marry Song". Three chords and the happy/sentimental/wistful truth. It's my ring tone, I play it twice a gig when I'm playin' guitar, and I tell all my friends about it. Don't know why I love it so much, but damn! Nice work, gentlemen....
Apparently I had a lot to say. If you've made it this far down in the blog entry, you should probably get out more. I definitely should get out more.
We love you. Come see us.

The fine folks over at Twangville.com gave our record a glorious review on their site just a few days ago. Check it out:
http://twangville.com/772/the-train-wreckswhiskey-war/
I gotta tell ya kids, I love me some good press. The piece was written up by Todd Mathis, who incidentally plays and sings with the very awesome Columbia, SC band American Gun. Check them out while you're floating around cyberspace.
www.myspace.com/americangun
If I had to write up a review of Todd's band, it'd be something like, "American Gun kick ass." Succinct!
We just added a show up in Atlanta. We're at historic Smith's Olde Bar on Monday, March 24th. 8PM. Happy Hour, ya'll! You can come out early on Monday, have a good time, and still make it home at a reasonable hour so you can get to your soul-sucking day job on time. It's a win-win.
It's the tenth anniversary of Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. What a weird, wonderful, fucked-up record. Listen to it straight through in one sitting. Essential.
Hope to see you guys soon. Check out the tour dates for more out-of-town shows...

So Tadd Trueb and the rest of the crew over @ MURMUR magazine gave us the cover of their January issue, and wrote a beautiful, glowing article about us. They even made us look all handsome and dashing and shit in the picture for the cover. Hell, I look like I'm some pasty, hillbilly superhero ready to take flight and save the Earth from disaster. If that's the case, the world is doomed. Sorry, world!

The article, in part, written by Chris Berinato:
It looks like "The Hardest Gigging Band in Savannah" is finally making it. Last August, the Train Wrecks released their debut album, Whiskey & War, to glowing reviews and are now planning on mounting a full-fledged tour of the southeast this year. For a band that started out their career with an unrehearsed toss-off gig, it's remarkable how wonderful an album the band was able to work up to creating. The Train Wrecks are undoubtedly one of the best bands in town.
I love me some good press! And that's just the first paragraph. The whole article is chocked full of good-ass press. Check it:
The resulting album is the culmination of all their hard work and growth as a band. It's a hopping blend of twangy americana and modern alternative rock. The raw and rocking playing by the band is beautifully complimented by rich production and The Boss himself would be proud of their excellent interpretation of "The Ghost of Tom Joad".
Snap. Please pick up a copy when you're out about town. Thanks, Chris! That mag really does kick ass.
We've been gettin' a lot of gigs outta town lately, which is pretty exciting for us. So look out Charleston, Bluffton, Valdosta, St. Simon's, etc. Lock up yr children and yr pets. Check out the tour section for when & where we're playing. More exciting news to come!

Hey, kids!
So we got a big ol' write-up in the Savannah Connect.
Here's a samplin' of what was said:
Simply put, this album is something of a revelation.....
Drawing inspiration from such stalwart artists as The Carter Family, Tom Petty and Uncle Tupelo —but most noticeably Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen— Bible and company have crafted the kind of simultaneously slick and raw record which the Ryan Adams regularly cranks out to much critical acclaim.....
Nice shit, huh? So, yeah, read it all here: http://www.connectsavannah.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A1481
Would've loved to hear more gushin' about the record and less gossipin' about what drunken messes we are, but the truth is a smelly, hairy bitch that follows right behind you at all times. I hate that truth-y bitch! We do like the cocktails, though, so it's kinda hard to complain about somebody pointing out that we like cocktails.....
The pretty picture that goes along with the article was taken by Craig Tanner, photographer extraordinaire. It ain't easy makin' us look handsome, which is a testament to his mad skills. Check him out: http://www.craigtannercreative.com/
Seriously, we're more than elated to have such a wonderful record under our belts and out amongst the public. Please come see us soon. We miss you all.

Hey kids!
We are currently swimming naked in a pool full of brand-spankin' new, shrink-wrapped, and long-awaited Whiskey & War CD's. Made by us. The Train Wrecks. I shit you not. They arrived a mere 8 months after our first CD release party. Oops! See, what had happened was..... The Train Wrecks juggernaut is a well-oiled machine, meeting all deadlines thrown our way!
Anyhoo, you may pick up your copy at any of our shows coming up. They even have that "new CD smell". You can still get the record right here on our website if you just want the files, but I have to tell you, the artwork on the CD is pretty crunk. Hillbilly Crunk. I just created a new genre of music. Look at me. It's been a big day all around! Jen Young is our graphic designer, and she's a bad-ass. I'll get a link up to her stuff asap. We're gonna have some new merch soon as well. Shirts, hats, thongs, rolling papers, etc. Schwag!
Truly, we couldn't be more proud of our record. Many thanks to everyone who's given a shit about us in the past two years or so. It's been a crazy ride. I'm pretty woozy from the whole thing, but here we are! We hope to have a big bash to celebrate the record's release real soon, with some press to accompany it. Keep looking at The Connect, Murmur, and the Savannah Morning News for tour dates and write-ups.....
I wish that mySpace had something so you could say what you're currently eating. 'Cause at 7PM this evening, I'm gonna be munchin' down on a phat slice of pizza-pie from world-famous Huc-A-Poos on Tybee Island. They're back!!!! Hell yeah. It'll take more than a three-alarm kitchen fire to keep them down. We're playing their grand opening tonite (7-9), and you should come by for a slice and an adult beverage.... or five.
So, to wrap up: Buy our record, eat at 'Poos, have some drinks.
Thanks!
Marquez

Hey, Kids!
Things are moving along at a snail's pace here @ TW HQ. A really fast snail, but still. There is light at the end of the tunnel, though. We've gotten most of the artwork back for our new compact disc, and hot damn if it don't look disturbingly professional. I'll be nowhere near embarrassed when I try to sell it to every single person I know..... twice. I'll be beaming with pride! It really does look great. We're shooting for an ASAP release date. I'll just let you know.
I think you can watch the video for "Whiskey Ain't My Friend No More" by clicking in the top left corner of the myspace home page, or by looking in our videos. It's kinda gross, what with Eric fallin' down and throwin' up and stuff. But it's our first video!!!!! Yay!!!! MTV7 look out! Here we come..... On a related note, we were featured in a local production called Savannah Heat. It turned out looking really cool. We'll get that up on the site, too, as soon as I figure out how to make that happen. Little help over here? Look for it, but don't hold your breath, 'cause that would be bad for you. It'll take a day or two......
Big thanks to Jailhouse Choppers for hooking us up with a bunch of custom bike festivals throughout the summer. Jason over at the shop is THE man! Check out their shizzle:

Have you seen Poison's new all-covers album? I think they're selling it on QVC. Ouch. Please stop giving them studio time... Please!!!!
I'll write more later. I think there's more stuff to tell ya.....
Later, Marquez
