New "What's In My Bag?" video from Girls added to Amoeba.com!

San Francisco band Girls is Christopher Owens and JR White. Christopher and JR met in San Francisco and quickly decided to make music together. They eventually became roommates and began recording in their bedrooms, using reel-to-reel tape and an old computer. Combining Christopher's simple and heartfelt lyrics with JR's production, they drew from '60s jangly pop, '50s surfer music, and their love of rock 'n' roll to create a California indie pop record all their own. Their debut, Album, was released on September 22, 2009. Self-described as "honest, loose, ethereal, obnoxious and perfect," Album also includes a seven-minute track called "Hellhole Ratrace" that was rated by Pitchfork as "one of the 100 best songs of the year."

Help Bring Solar Power to People in Need with POWER UP THE PLANET cd Available at Amoeba

Power Up The Planet
takes high-energy tracks from global artists, and mixes in an innovative project to bring solar power to the people.

Enough power to run a radio or a mobile phone, or to have a little light. It’s about giving impoverished people some basic tools so that they can pull themselves up. A little power can radically change lives.

World-class musicians have come together to help to bring small-scale power and lighting solutions to people in need. Every album sold helps SolarAid train people in poor communities to harness the power of the sun.

SolarAid uses the power of the sun to fight climate change and poverty. With successful projects in Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Kenya, SolarAid brings solar lanterns, mobile phone and battery chargers to rural and remote communities, replacing dangerous & expensive kerosene lanterns with clean, renewable power.

Power Up The Planet is available at any Amoeba location or online at Amoeba.com!

New "What's In My Bag?" video from Poncho Sanchez added to Amoeba.com!

Percussionist and singer Poncho Sanchez has recorded 24 albums in 25 years, combining Latin and Afro-Cuban jazz, salsa, soul, swing, and bepop. Originally from Laredo, Texas, Sanchez grew up in Los Angeles where he was influenced by the musical diversity that surrounded him, including jazz, Latin jazz, and soul. He taught himself to play guitar, flute, drums and timbales, but settled on the congas. He began playing in vibraphone player Cal Tjader's band in 1974, at age 24, and continued with him until Tjader's death in 1982. After the death of his mentor, Sanchez signed to Concord records and released his first album, Sonando!, in 1982. Over the years, Poncho Sanchez has collaborated with artists such as Mongo Santamaria, Hugh Masakela, Arturo Sandoval, Clare Fischer, and Tower of Power. His latest (and his 24th) album for Concord is called Psychedelic Blues (2009).
