Our Secret Sins

With a rodeo bull, hook-a-duck and bouncy castles, to your average music fan this year’s Billingham Charity Trophy event seemingly has little appeal. However, beneath the village fete exterior, one of the region’s most promising bands will be taking to the stage.
Teesside octet Our Secret Sins formed at the tail-end of 2007, but it’s only recently that they’ve produced some genuinely intriguing tunes.
With their brooding pop underpinned by a real sense of urgency, they’re the alternative soundtrack to an Irvine Welsh novel; lines about casual sex, violence and feverish drug consumption are lovingly offset with wit, warmth and a feeling of youthful naivety.
Pairing psych-rock riffs with codified beats, their track Seize The Day sounds like The Coral if they swapped their guitars for synths, whereas the Syd Barrett-esque Waves Of Silence – complete with a haunting children’s choir and space-age sound effects – sounds as if it has been beamed in from a different planet altogether.
With their music going off at weird tangents, it’s easy to see why Our Secret Sins describe themselves as a musical experiment, rather than simply a band.
