A very close friend of mine sent this to me on a letter that I received today; it was on something she printed out from the web, so I retyped it so that I can share it with all of you.

America’s True Heroes

 For many years, actor and political commentator Ben Stein wrote a biweekly column for Eonline.com called “Monday Night at Morton’s.” Stein recently ended the column, named for an upscale restaurant that is frequented by Hollywood stars daily. In this final installment, Ben Stein presents his reasons for no longer pursuing the attention of Hollywood’s elite.
 “A real star is the soldier for the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world. A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad. He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him. A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordnance on the street near where he was guarding a station. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded. He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad.
 “The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists. We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the cover of magazines. The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.
 “I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton’s is a big subject. There are plenty of other stars in the American Sky.”(Ben Stein, “How can someone who lives in insane luxury be a star in today’s world?” reprinted in The War Cry, April 16, 2005)
 Ben Stein’s commentary agrees with the words of an obscure military chaplain, credited with this assessment of the soldier’s contribution to our society:
It is the Soldier not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier not campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the Soldier not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier, who salutes the Flag,
Who serves beneath the Flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the Flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the Flag.

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, I make no claim to piety or sainthood. I humbly take my place with the rest of sinful humanity and ask for forgiveness for my shortco9mings and for strength and courage to faithfully discharge my duties as a soldier. Help me, O God, to be faithful to that noble task to which you have called me- to defend America, to liberate the oppressed, to protect the innocent, and to establish your peace and justice throughout the world. Amen.

 My friend sent this to me and I just wanted to share it with the rest of you. I found it very meaningful for my self and the rest of my family no matter what service or where they might be serving at. Thanks for the time. Pass on the message.

RED FRIDAYS...

RED FRIDAYS ----- Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions.

Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly mo re than the media lets on.


The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is...We need your support and your prayers. Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear some thing red every Friday.
