It is with a heavy heart that I report the untimely death of current HSB drummer Rick Frye.

Rick was best known for his work with legendary Columbus group "Phil Dirt and the Dozers", He had been doing double duty with the Dozers and with the Hadden Sayers Band (dubbed "Hadden Sayers and the Hillbillies" for Rick and his brother; HSB Bass Player Mark's West Virginia heritage).

We had just finished a showcase performance in Williamsburg, VA when "Uncle Rick" collapsed on the sidewalk behind the venue. All attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at the emergency room in Williamsburg on Friday Jan. 5th.

Uncle Rick was a life-long musician....he had a great song-serving groove much like his heroes the great Benny Benjamin and Charlie Watts. He was loved by his fellow musicians both on and off the stage.

Rick was the type of musician you didn't need to call in advance of a gig to discuss what it paid or how far away...the unspoken rule was "take the gig...I'm in".

His only love in this world other than studying, discussing and playing Rock and Roll music was his Family...an intensely loyal and loving brood that came to see him perform constantly.

He was all heart with an ocean for a soul and I will miss him greatly.

Dear reader of my pathetic attempts at a blog:

Hope you're well. I've been travelling a lot and have lots of nifty photos to upload over the next few days. Washington DC, Mexico, San Francisco, Tupelo, Christmas in Nashville.....Christmas?...in Nashville?!
Here's the story: I've been wanting to record a Christmas album for many years and...like most folks.....after Christmas comes and goes the thought slips my mind until its too late to get anything done. Not the case this year my friends and I'll tell you why. I found another artist who was in the same boat and we promised to remind each other before it got too late. Mike is an extremely talented Mandolin player from the popular college/alt-country group "Cast Iron Filter" and most-recently "IronGrass Trio". Seems that....due to the fact that the HSB has ALWAYS had dates on the books....and now there appear to be none....Some people are concerned as to my well-being. There may be only a few souls that are concerned but to those who are keeping track: Please know that I am fine. No bad situations, health issues or chemical dependencies that need to be rectified. I'm simply not playing out right now. I've chosen to spend all of my time (and I mean ALL of my time) writing and recording songs in my attic...which serves as my music room. No burger joints, chicken fingers, truck stops, toll booths, shots at 2 a.m. (both kinds), noon wake-up calls, all-night drives, or disgruntled nightclub employees....at least in the immediate future. Instead I'm up at 8:00 and in front of the microphone by 9:00 putting songs into some type of form that even the average listener can discern. Its pretty cool really. When my calendar does fill up with dates...and truck stops....and 2 a.m. shots, You will be the first to know. In the meantime...I'm in a deep Brian Wilson phase.......more to follow. Back in Columbus, OH after a successful run through upstate New York and backwoods PA. Cool shows this week in Ithaca, NY...great town with fantastic vibe and a bar that would be my home if I lived in Ithaca. Watkins Glen was strong. Makes me feel good when they sing the words. Makes me feel like a jerk when I forget them. Dane and the boys warmed us up. Ross was rippin the guitar. Rockton, PA is definitely a different place. Super cool owner....colorful cast of characters. Making some changes to my guitar rig after some serious technical problems. Whole new rig goes out this week. Heard a song by Ryan Adams that kicked my ass : "29" Nice. I always told Steven Ray Will I wasn't impressed with Ryan Adams....guess I should take that back. I've got precious little time to demo a LOT of new songs before I head out to Bufalo. Thank god for the warmth of down...

I'm in Syracuse....at the Super 8 Motel....drinking the weak coffee and preparing to head out to the Carousel Mall where we will waste hours like minutes before heading down to Ithaca. Had a nice chat with Scott Sterling last night...He has always been a big supporter...and highly skilled at keeping me awake on the bleary drive from Rochester to Syracuse at 3:00 a.m. Nice to see so many Cast Iron Filter/Michael Orlando fans out to both the Syracuse and Rochester shows wanting to know how I ended up playing guitar on the new Orlando record. Orlando is net-savvy on top of being a ridiculous musician and highly competent in the art of southern cuisine. I'm hoping to share the stage with him soon. I miss Texas today. Snow is pretty......on Christmas eve.

The annual Christmas show at McGonigel's Mucky Duck in Houston has been scheduled
