I've uploaded another little bit of trouble to our Song of the Month Club.

Oh Be Joyful

Thanks for all the feedback. The bouquets have (slightly) outnumbered the death-threats, a pleasant surprise.

Augie March have just announced their final tour of the year, the succinctly named “Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir” tour.

This will see Augie March traverse the continent in July and August, playing 17 shows covering all state capital cities and selected regional areas. This promises to be a trip down memory lane for Augie fans because all four albums will have an equal showing on this grand tour.

Here is where we would like you to help shape the setlist. We would be interested to hear your thoughts as to the songs you hope to hear Augie March play on this tour. All of the songs from their 4 albums are included in the poll – plus songs from the two early EPs and some b-sides/bonus tracks. You can choose one track per section.

The band will then consider the results when putting the show together.

Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir
Australian Tour

With Special Guests: Gareth Liddiard & Dan Luscombe  (The Drones)

For the past 13 years Melbourne band Augie March have achieved what very few bands, indeed artists in any field in Australia, can claim to have achieved.  While steadily building a loyal and ferocious fan base, they have simultaneously sustained critical acclaim and commercial viability.

This year has seen the completion of two very successful and very different tours on the back of the release of their fourth LP “Watch Me Disappear”.  The most recent, titled “On The Quiet” was a sellout, a rare presentation of the band stripped back and swinging, a revelation for many in the audience who perhaps had always heard the music but never realised it was 5 human beings with sticks and strings making it come about.

In contrast this winter, Augie March will don full regalia and take the garden of forking paths into their own schizophrenic past where minotaur’s with broken hearts hold up the front bar, manic pixies bore repeatedly into the necks of corporate swindlers, and the human condition gets ridden roughshod by rabid monkeys into an unthinkable tomorrow.  Plus there may be a love song or two. Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir will be a trip down memory lane for Augie fans because all four albums will have an equal showing on this grand tour.

For their final large-scale tour for 2009, Augie March will be hitting the bitumen in the company of Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe of the phenomenal outfit The Drones.  Great friends for many years and fellow travelers on the arduous, terribly unfashionable, and yet rewarding long road. It is a dream pairing for anyone who likes their coffee dark and strong with a dash of firewater.  Both bands have seen the snake eat its own tail more than a few times and have forged on with a gritted tooth smile regardless.  In an acoustic setting these chaps will shine every night.

Apart from the odd festival this will be the last chance to see Augie March doing what they do before they take a well-earned breather. In their time off there may well be a solo album or two and some time given to projects in film, photography, claymation and other interests. In the meantime we invite you to one of the tours of 2009, from your own country, no evidence required, no gimmicks in the songbox, Augie March.

Hurl a sodden cask of cheap chardonnay at the bow. All aboard the maiden voyage of Oh Be Joyful's 'Song Of The Month Club'.

Oh Be Joyful

Just some music I've been working on. An evolving new album released in online installments, if you will. I'll try and update with a song or two every month until I run out of breath.

It’s the eve of On The Quiet.

After playing to 85,000 people at Sound Relief at the MCG on the weekend, Augie March return to rooms the size of which they haven’t played for a decade or so.

On The Quiet will showcase the band in intimate settings, as they perform songs from across their 12-year history. Playing as a full band, but with a large dose of acoustic instruments. Sometimes no amplification at all, sometimes full blast electric amplification. Sometimes with the addition of horns. Electric and acoustic, eclectic and low-keystic. But at all times, intimate, harmonious and close.

Dave says:
“We’ve put our thinking caps on and our goal was to re-interpret our songs. In the process we have re-discovered the beauty of some, and the menace of others. Some songs got a reinvention, some songs got a re-tread, some songs got put into rehab, some songs got put to bed. It’s been fun for us to re-discover these songs, we’ve enjoyed the challenge.”

The tour kicks off in Victoria at Ruby’s Lounge in Belgrave tomorrow night (Thurs), going on to The Palais in Hepburn Springs on Saturday night.

Three shows at Melbourne’s The Toff In Town follow from March 26 to 29 (Sat night sold out), then we head up to NSW in early April for three shows at The Basement in Sydney (Fri night sold out) and The Cambridge, Newcastle.

Extra shows are now on sale in both Melbourne and Sydney. Details below.

We hope to see you On The Quiet. The shows promise to be particularly special.

Augie March have also been invited to join the likes of Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Kings Of Leon and many more to perform at the MCG for the Melbourne leg of Sound Relief on March 14th. With all band members having strong ties to the bush and regional Victoria, the band are glad to be able to do their bit to help support those affected by the Victorian bushfires.

Adding to their month of goodwill, the boys will perform 'One Crowded Hour' for fans at a free event at Federation Square for Earth Hour on March 28th, before jumping on their pushbikes and making their way to their Toff show, in a carbon neutral manner.
