***Would you like to speak out about smacking at a major young person-led concert?*** We are looking for two young people to give a speech at a concert on Wednesday 18th November, in Winchester Cathedral. The concert will be a very big event, run entirely by young musicians. It's called 'A child's tear' and is all about ending violence against children and young people. This is a great chance to do something new, practice your public speaking skills and gain experience. Before the concert, both young speakers would meet with us to talk about it and prepare the speech. Everything would be FREE for you - we would pay for all your travel, food and accomodation expenses. We can also help by writing a letter to your school if you need to take time off. Winchester is about an hour from London by train. This opportunity is open to children and young people of any age, and of any religion or none. If you are interested, please let us know as soon as possible, and by Wednesday 21st October at the latest. Click here for more information: http://www.childrenareunbeatable.org.uk/children/update2.html#news3 * * * Plus: learn about Parliament, do a children's rights quiz and play children's rights bingo at our other events! Don't forget, it's all completely FREE and we will pay for all your travel and food expenses. Read on for more...

Exhibition: Growing up without violence
Our friends at the Churches Network for Non-Violence are running a touring exhibition about ending violence against children. We are working with them to make sure that children and young people in the places the exhibition visits have the chance to be involved. The exhibition visited Cambridge in July and its next stop, in November 2009, is in Coventry. So if you live nearby, click here to find out more - and if not, watch this space to find out where we'll be next! Click here for more information: http://www.childrenareunbeatable.org.uk/children/update2.html#news3
News Free activities for schools and groups We've recently created a special new activity pack for schools. It contains ideas for activities to help groups of young people learn more about legalised violence against children and think about how things could be different. It's designed for schools, but youth groups and other groups can use it too. It's completely free. Take a look at it - and if you like it, why not tell your teacher or group leader about it? Don't forget, we also offer free visits to schools and youth groups - so if you want us to come and run these or other activities for you, then get in touch! Click here for more information: http://www.childrenareunbeatable.org.uk/children/activities.html
We recommend... All over the world, young people like you are campaigning against corporal punishment (including smacking). A new website to tell you all about them has just been launched! Find out how young people from countries from New Zealand to Mongolia and Uganda to Indonesia have been changing things in their own countries and communities. Take a look at it here: http://www.endcorporalpunishment.org/children.html
And finally... We are always happy to hear from our supporters - so if you have any questions, comments or ideas for us, just get in touch!

'Government consultation' might not sound like the most exciting couple of words. But it's better than it sounds. It means the government is offering everyone a chance to have their say! This means YOU! Right now, the government are running a consultation about violence against women and girls. It's really important for all supporters of Children are Unbeatable – girls, boys, men and women. The government rightly says that all violence against women is wrong, wherever it happens and whoever commits it.
But the law still says that violence against under-18s in their own homes and from their own families is OK! This has to stop! To help prevent violence against women and girls, the government needs to give all children equal protection from violence. You can tell the government what you think in these ways:
* * *
1. Talk about what you think...
You can tell us what you think on the phone. Click here for more.
* * *
2. Write about what you think...
You can write it all down. Click here for more.
* * *
3. Mini job opportunity! Be a young editor for CAU...
Get up to £40 in vouchers and some excellent experience! Click here for more.
* * * Get in touch...
We love hearing from you! We will always do our best to answer any questions you have.

Last week, MPs were supposed to vote on whether to make it illegal to hit children. But at the last minute, the vote was cancelled because there wasn't enough time for it. So, common assault of children is still legal in the UK. Obviously, this is very disappointing indeed. Lots of you have worked very hard over the past year with us, and we really appreciate your support. Thank you very much for everything you have done. From writing to your MPs to speaking at your youth groups, from attending conferences and meetings to helping us at festivals, we couldn't have done it without you. Your work has not been wasted. We have made a lot of progress. Lots more MPs now support us, and we know that if there had been a vote, we might have won. Eventually, children and young people will get the legal protection from violence that they need and deserve. We'll keep campaigning for it to happen as soon as possible! There will be lots of opportunities to help in our future campaigning. We'll be letting you know about them soon. Thank you again for all your support. We're looking for children and young people to work with us to change the law so that nobody will be allowed to hit or hurt children.
If you live in or near London, you can do this by joining our campaign group! The children and young people in the campaign group will agree together how they will campaign.
Some of the things they might do are: * meeting people in the government * telling lots of people about the campaign * writing to newspapers to explain about why they think the law should change
This is a great opportunity to work with other children and young people to make a real difference. It's all free and we will pay for your travel expenses to meetings.
If you don't live in or near London, you can still get involved, by joining the alliance or becoming a representative.
Representatives work to tell other children and young people about the alliance, for instance by giving out leaflets and posters, or holding special meetings in their youth groups, schools or playschemes.
Message me to find out more and join in!
Elinor
(Children's Campaign Co-ordinator)
