Hello all who are still actively reading this, or happened across a MySpace notice saying that I've updated my MySpace. Ryan and I have made considerable progress on the record. Even I am surprised at how much the songs have changed thanks to Ryan's creative and technical touches, and my, well, agreement with pretty much whatever he says. I promise we'll have finished results to deliver soon. As well as my own album, I'll be recording an EP of Tom Dalton (who just released a fantastic album called No Fault) and Nathan Veshecco (who is currently recording what is sure to be another great album) covers without their expressed and written consent. This EP will be much less produced than my own record because I'll be doing it with a mic plugged into a mixer that's plugged into my laptop. This EP is a long, long time coming. I've also been talking with First Sight Productions about coming to the studio and filming a few of our sessions. The results will be edited down to either a few short videos, or one long one to post on YouTube and on the upcoming mikelengel.com. What good comes of such a project like this? I don't know. I just thought it'd be neat. I'll be flying home to Mechanicsburg, PA tomorrow (the 23rd) for the holidays. I expect to come back with a few pages of lyrics to work with. I hope to keep this updated a little more than I have in the past. In fact, you can even remind me to update it if you want, via my Facebook or Twitter. An abbreviated list of what I've been listening to since we last spoke: Bob Dylan, The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3
Pearl Jam, Backspacer
Chris Botti, In Boston
Tom Dalton, No Fault
Phil Collins, Face Value
Wilco, Wilco (The Album)Liars, Drum's Not Dead
Keep your heads up. -mike

Hello all. Sorry for the lapse of communication - all's been busy in the studio. Inching closer and closer to finishing the record.
Here's the songs that have been carrying me through:
The Mountain Goats - "No Children" Neil Young - "A Man Needs A Maid" The Wallflowers - "Invisible City" Thom Yorke - "Harrowdown Hill" Shearwater - "The Snow Leopard" Passion Pit - "Moth's Wings" The Manchester Orchestra - "The River" Jeff Buckley - "I Know We Could Be So Happy Baby (If We Wanted To Be)"
Sorry, no Michael Jackson here.
Played a show with my studio engineer, Ryan Fancher, on the 8th. He played keyboards and saxophones, and I may have found a new show partner for the rest of my Seattle shows.
Change happens, no matter what.
Cheers, mike

At the request of many, my friend Ryan Fancher helped me remaster my song, "Tightrope." It's very different.
Who do I think I am?
Enjoy, and thanks for listening. -ml

I've posted a new song called "Start Over," and its a short little ghostly song. Its actually my first attempt at writing a song that speaks about what's happening in the world, and the attempt failed somewhat. Only maybe 3 or 4 people have heard the song in its entirety as of now.
This is the first, and perhaps only, demo of my upcoming LP. Thanks to Ryan Fancher for recording it for me. He's very strict about demo-leaking, so there may not be another until the album is finished. It's probably better that way.
Thanks for listening. -ml

Former 'Lost Boy' to lead U.S. Olympians in BeijingA great story of heroism that often goes overlooked. I'd planned on watching most of the Olympic coverage that I could, but now I plan on parking into my couch and making sure I see Lopez Lomong represent us in Beijing. Cheers all, ml

Hello all,
The following is a list of albums that were favorites of mine in high school that have recently crept like tiny little spiders back into my CD player:
Foo Fighters - Colour and the Shape There's something about this album that I can't ever give up. Every song, from start to finish, has some sort of awesome little twist that really grabs your attention. "Monkey Wrench" has that classic screaming last verse, "February Stars" kicks your ass at the end, and "New Way Home" changes moods like a rebellious 13 year old boy. "Everlong" is a timeless classic that should go down as one of the best rock songs ever written, despite VH1's not including it in their list of "Best 90's Songs."
Rufio - Perhaps, I Suppose Well, this album is a familiar memory. Full of fast paced, typical punk rock, Rufio is one of those bands that remind you what emo really is - no bands today even touch Rufio's emo-ness. Despite the sad breakup stories prevalent in, well, every single song (except maybe "Above Me," which I think might be about a family member), the quirky guitar work and rhythm selections are still pretty neat.
The Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse Come on, this is a pretty damn good songwriter-appealing album. It crosses the boundaries of country-rock and pop (not like Wilco...) with grace, and Jakob Dylan thankfully doesn't sound exactly like his dad. Check out the track "Josephine," and get a whiff of the badass Hammond Organ that shows up a few times on the album.
The Ataris - Blue Skies, Broken Hearts... Next 12 Exits Ohhh, high school. Sometimes I really, really miss you. The punk rock that was around in those years was so much fun. I never got to go to Warped Tour, but I heard now its morphed into that metalcore obsession that's hit high schools nationwide and is usually associated with UFC fighting. What the hell happened?
Blink 182 - Dude Ranch Pretty much the album that got me through high school. Not that high school was hard, but this was the album that I seemed to relate to the most. Not that I spent most of my time locked in a room masturbating, there are a lot of other themes. That one just seems the most prevalent.
Coldplay - Parachutes I was just like everyone else: I hated "Yellow" when it first came out. It was a really, really annoying song when matched up with the other music I listened to then. But it was recommended to me quite a few times, and the more I listened, the more I started to appreciate the British style of rock they brought with their debut album, and have impressively kept up with their latest work.
Dashboard Confessional - The Swiss Army Romance Hmmm..... oh yeah, he used to have an acoustic guitar, and some pretty impressive lyrics. Sorry, he's sold out so much lately that I almost forgot who the hell he is.
Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales This is the album that I most frequently have the "oh yeah!" reaction to. Every once in a while, I'll scroll past a song like "Flake" or "Inaudible Melodies," tune my ears to the way-too-loud drums and percussive acoustics and bask in the glory of simplistic songwriting.
I was really into jazz and blues then, but I didn't include those albums in this list because I still listen to them. So they're not really classified as a "twist of preference." But, in some sort of honorarium, I'll list some of them anyway:
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - In Step Eric Clapton - Journeyman Eric Clapton and B.B. King - Riding With The King John Scofield - Works For Me John Scofield - Uberjam Mike Stern - Standards and Other Songs John Coltrane - A Love Supreme John Coltrane - Blue Train
Cheers, ml
P.S. - Radiohead in 14 days.
