Ultimate Twilight Challenge-- March 21, 2009
At one o’clock on the dot the engines were started and participates ran to their cars with clue and maps in hand. Approximately 100 thirsty Twilight fans, representing 20 teams signed up. The first clue read, “If you don’t like Vampires and you want to keep them away, what would help you do that?” The crowd headed in several directions. Some headed to LaPush, thinking that no vampires would go there. There were many more molesting the garlic at Forks Outfitters. However, the teams on the right track were at J & P Produce. The advertisement for garlic on the front of the store was a clue for some. The clue that they found in the garlic bin said, “If I had garlic on my breath, would Edward kiss me?’ This was the key to the next clue, which led them to Newton’s Sporting Goods Store. The clue stated that Bella liked the red and white ones best. The red and white ones, being the bobbers. There were a few clues that seemed to be favorites. The clue taking them to the Coast Guard Station was tough, but they commented that when they got there it was worth it. The second being, simply, “Where’s Bella’s Bed?” Those that figured the clue out went to the visitor’s center and retrieved it from the bed of Bella’s truck.
The winning team was the “Hometown Honeys.” The team’s members were, Shauna Peters, Rhonda Prose, Nellie Baysinger and Sara Soha. At the half way point, there were 3 teams in front of them. Due to bathroom stops and choosing the wrong points, the Honey’s pulled ahead. They bolted through the door with the winning answer to the final clue, to win the challenge. Each team member received a Leppell’s Flowers exclusive Twilight umbrella, printed, “Forks, Wa. Where vampires rain.” It had taken just under 2 hours.
The Mrs. Cullen’s Team arrived a few minutes later to claim their prizes of Leppell’s Flowers Ceramic Twilight apples. The team consisted of Angel Stone, Jenna Stone, Rose Griffen and Kim Kaster. This team was from the Buckley/Auburn area. They were equally as enthusiastic about the experience.
The third place teams were Kelly Sutera, Robbie Sutera, Chris Boylan and Karyn Mill all of Aberdeen. The team received posters. It had taken them about a half hour longer than the winning team.
Two teams returned at once, fighting for third place, each trying to answer the final clue. The clue was, “Someone gave Bella flowers for her 16th birthday. What were they and what color were they?’ “Where would she have purchased them?” This clue was to bring them back to Leppell’s Flowers.
Around 6 o’clock two other teams showed up. They were determined to complete the challenge. They had stopped and had something to eat and then decided to try it again.
Both teams were awarded constellation prices for their efforts.
With the 20 teams that started the challenge, 12 finished. When the winners checked in at Leppell’s, the remaining contestants were called on their cell phones and told so they could make a choice to continue or to stop.
