I voted for Obama-Biden last November. I voted for hope. I did not think I was voting for more war. A lot of things I voted for may not be addressed because war is a sport that sucks the air out of a presidential administration and drains the spirit of a nation. I voted for health care for all. I wanted support for HR 676, the Conyers “Medicare for all” to be a part of the debate about our people and about single payer health insurance would benefit economic growth. I voted so that no human is illegal. Our racist immigration laws and attitudes are an affront to the values our nation should aspire to and ignores the fact that our culture and our economy are enriched when our borders are more open and our hearts are open as well. Prosperity depends on our border being a symbol of human rights for all who choose to cross it peacefully and openly. I voted for employee free choice legislation to tighten rules against union busting and illegitimate employer interference against employee organizing. It would allow a majority card check of employee interest to obviate the need for an election. An attitude of Union yes reinforces economic human rights. That is good for citizen workers. That will reduce exploitation of immigrant workers. I voted for increased funding and emphasis on science and space exploration. We can build spaceships and atom smashers. Basic science costs money. But, the money is not nearly as much as from the waste of wars. We could stabilize our climate, protect our environment, green our jobs, and reduce hunger and obesity. Yes we can. But no we can’t, and we won’t. The wars will sink everything. The wars will extinguish the flame of hope. We will forget to relight the candle, and we will not do what we want, can, and should. I voted for wars and empire. I should have known. David Smithers Box 357Wellman, Iowa 52356-0357

I am working for health care reform. The preferred and necessary reform is for single payer public health insurance such as the Canadians have enjoyed for over twenty years. In fact the politician who first advanced their plan is a national hero in Canadian political history. The second front I am working on is with “Organizing for America” and those supporting the “public option” plan such as that proposed by the Service Employees International Union and President Barack Obama. I am experiencing a stressful period of my health story right now. I am a 56-year-old white man. I am morbidly obese, have type II diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, depression, and neuropathy. I am also the father of three young adult boys who I would like to leave some tiny estate to and/or help with their young adult lives, as my wife and I were helped. As it is they have helped my wife and I, financially, as much as the other way around. Any long-term incapacity to work or wait to obtain disability benefits would devastate my wife and I, and would have personal generational repercussions. During our adult years we have been fortunate to have good health insurance and sick pay, as we have been employees of the University of Iowa. We did not have health insurance when we were in our twenties, just as our boys do not. Nevertheless, even with our health insurance, we have bankrupted three times, and each filing had a large component of health care debt as the prime cause. The fear of incapacity and being unable to help our children is something that would start to be solved with the introduction of single payer national health insurance. Of course, personal and societal health care variables will have to improve, as well, but health insurance is the greatest Achilles’ heal. The American Dream and the American Economy are closely linked. For the average American, the dream and the economy are not very good and confidence is evaporating. To Senator Charles Grassley, I would like your support of a decent public option package that is immediately available. But, far more important, I ask that Representative Dave Loebsack and Senator Tom Harkin renew their support for single payer. And, President Obama, I voted to end the American health insurance crisis, and for single payer to be number one on the bargaining table. Hopefully, I can get back to regular blogging on my little flagship podium on MySpace. I have been fairly active with many local friends and some faraway on Facebook (see, David Arthur Smithers, Cedar Rapids). I have traveled a little ways politically from my days of participating in the Iowa Democrats, as I deeply admired the campaigns of Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney. Like a lot of people, I would best be categorized as a socialist who happens to be a long time member of the Democratic Party. On things like immigration and the drug war, libertarian leanings must be added to my political conciousness.
This week, I have suffered the pain of my first eruption of Chicken Pox Shingles. The spot was confined to my right back neck and scalp nerve. but I had a lingering cold and flu before and since which has kept me sleeping a lot.
Locally, I am involved with three others in forming the founding bylaws of Iowans for Economic Human Rights, Inc. Hopefully it will evolve into a statewide organization with local chapters. The inspiration follows from the Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
May 12 was the one year anniversary of the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raid on the packing plant in Postville, Iowa. I was honored to join the protest in August, and visited the town for the first time. I have gone to local meetings of the Justice Peace Outreach Group and eastern Iowa PEACE to discuss this matter and also the antiwar efforts in the Iowa City area.
I have recently been elected an area vice president in AFSCME local 12, and am working at becoming a steward again after a hiatus of 10+ years. I have not dropped my registration as a Democrat and keep in contact with many party friends around the state and in Washington County. My active participation has been cut back as I evaluate how to include my Green Party, socialist, etc. complexities into the mix. My loyalty as a straight ticket voter ended in 2008. Though, I was a supporter of Senator Joe Biden, even given my political differences ith him, just because I grew to like him and his family as they spent so much time in the Iowa caucus of 07-08.
As a liberal, I hold out some faint hope that the Obama presidency will begin the U-Turn in the ill fated project of American Empire, and begin working again on the American Dream. I remain an affectionate critic.

Many apologies for this second email. We are still learning our new system. On yesterday (Tuesday, February 24), the Obama Administration executed the FIRST WORKSITE RAID of his administration. Outside Seattle in a factory in Bellingham, Washington, 28 workers, including 3 mothers, were chained and arrested as part of an ICE enforcement operation.
TAKE ACTION:
1. Call the White House at 202-456-1414 and tell President Obama:
- Business as usual at ICE is not change we can believe in.
- Now more than ever, a top to bottom review of ICE priorities and it enforcement operations is needed.
- At a minimum, until the new ICE Director (named Monday) and an oversight strategy is in place, please halt these types of enforcement actions.
- Just last week, you promised that you are committed to fixing the broken immigration system through comprehensive immigration reform. The President can't say one thing and do another. The community needs clarity.
- Latino and immigrant voters turned out in massive numbers to vote for change and we will be watching very closely how you handle this incident, these detainees and their legal rights, and the immigration issue in general.
2. Issue a press release or statement expressing your concerns. Sample below.

***PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY: IOWA CITY ORGANIZING BUS TRIP TO D.C. 3/20-3/22*** On March 21 in Washington, D.C. there will be a national antiwar demonstration and march on the Pentagon. Iowa City organizers are currently working on sending a bus to this important mobilization. We are looking for people interested in going, and for generous individuals and groups who can donate any amount of money--no matter how small--to sponsor riders. The cost is $100-$125 depending upon what each person can afford. If you are interested but cannot afford the full cost, please reply to this e-mail anyway because we will be working diligently on fundraising so that we can offer financial assistance. Call Liz Mick at 319-594-0569 with any questions, to reserve a seat, or to make a donation pledge. Please make checks out to Naomi Prager with "D.C. Bus Trip" in the memo line. The mailing address for checks is: D.C. Bus Trip, P.O. Box 10023, Iowa City, IA 52245. We are also investigating a possible Paypal option for payments and donations. This demonstration and march will be an excellent opportunity to make your voice heard to the Obama administration, Congress, and the military-industrial complex that continuing the Bush administration's policy of occupying Iraq and Afghanistan with no end in sight is unjust, immoral, and fiscally irresponsible in the extreme. Remember the Obama administration's "withdrawal plan" for Iraq is not a withdrawal of all occupying forces. It is only a withdrawal of "combat troops"--which also doesn't cover the massive private contractor force also occupying the country. As for Afghanistan, the new administration is dedicated to doubling the U.S. military presence there in addition to pushing other NATO countries to raise their number of troops there. This includes continuing another Bush administration policy--violating Pakistan's sovereignty by using unmanned aerial drone attacks to kill suspected terrorists which often kill civilians in the process. Now is the time to say no to the continuation of these policies. Go to www.pentagonmarch.org for more information about the events on March 21st.

Tens of thousands marched on the Pentagon in March 2007
| ..
While millions of families are losing their homes, jobs and healthcare, the real military budget next year will top one trillion dollars--that's $1,000,000,000,000. If used to meet people’s needs, that amount could create 10 million new jobs at $60,000 per year, provide healthcare for everyone who does not have it now, rebuild New Orleans, and repair much of the damage done in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. The cost for the occupation of Iraq alone is $400 million each day, or about $12 billion each month.
The war in Iraq has killed, wounded or displaced nearly one third of Iraq’s 26 million people. Thousands of U.S. soldiers have been killed, and hundreds of thousands more have suffered severe physical and psychological wounds. The U.S. leaders who have initiated and conducted this criminal war should be tried and jailed for war crimes.
The war in Afghanistan is expanding. Robert Gates, Bush's defense secretary, who was kept at his post by President Obama, has announced that the troop levels in Afghanistan may double in the coming months. Both he and Vice President Biden predicted higher casualties--or what they cavalierly call "an uptick" in casualties--in the coming period.
We must also act to end U.S. support for Israel’s on-going war against the Palestinian people. The Bush Administration also gave the green light and provided the weapons and the money for Israel’s recent war against the Palestinian people in Gaza. More than 5,000 Palestinians were killed or wounded; the majority of casualties were civilians, including hundreds of children, in this high tech massacre. And “We the People” paid the bill, as the U.S. provides $2.5 billion a year for Israel’s massive military machine.
The March 21, 2009, March on the Pentagon will be a critical opportunity to let the new administration in Washington hear the voice of the people demanding an immediate end to wars and occupation, and demanding economic justice. Joint actions will take place on the West Coat in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano is to be the director of Homeland Security, and given that some of the most racist policies and attitudes exist in Arizona, compared to California, New Mexico, and Texas where Hispanics experience comparatively more welcome and tolerance, I want to make sure that human rights for undocumented migrant peoples is not sacrificed to racism and border walls. Immigrant Rights Activists March on ICE on Day After InaugurationBy Marcelo Ballvé, New America Media Posted on January 21, 2009, Printed on January 23, 2009 http://www.alternet.org/story/121570/Even as the masses celebrating President Obama's inauguration dispersed, a new crowd gathered Wednesday for a day-after march to place immigrant rights atop the president's agenda. Immigrant advocates know their nativist opponents plan to deploy online organizing and viral communication to counter any attempts at immigration reform this year. They intend to seize every opportunity to build momentum on their side. The pro-immigrant activists, many immigrants themselves, marched on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) headquarters to remind the fledgling administration of their demand for a "just and humane" immigration policy. "It's an opportunity to celebrate, but also to point forward to the great need for immigration reform in the months ahead," said Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum. Immigrant advocates believe Pres. Barack Obama will stick to his promise to begin work on comprehensive immigration reform in his first year in office. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said the immigration system is "broken." And even before a major overhaul is proposed, activists hope for changes to some of the most criticized aspects of current immigration policy. These may include the huge backlog in naturalization requests, the workplace raids that have sown chaos in immigrant communities, inhumane detention centers, or the "287(g)" program, which delegates immigration enforcement to state troopers, county sheriffs or local police. The activists that gathered outside ICE headquarters were guided by interdenominational religious leaders in a "ceremonial cleansing," marking what they hope will be the agency's shift away from what they deem an "enforcement-only" approach. The event was organized by the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), a coalition of state-level and national groups working for comprehensive immigration reform. FIRM also ran an ad campaign on signs atop Washington, D.C. cabs that showed real immigrants' faces and said: "Mr. President, count on me." Also distributed were T-shirts and signs bearing the slogan, "I am immigrant America." FIRM's blog on Inauguration Day noted that in his inaugural address, Obama "spoke of a country that ensures freedom for all … Now, it’s our time to make sure that the same freedom and the same values include the immigrants of America." The post-inaugural march is only a beginning. Immigrant advocates spoke about the need for maintaining momentum in the first months of Obama's administration. Though they perceive the new administration as sympathetic and staffed with some prominent supporters of their cause (most notably Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Cecilia Muñoz, a veteran of the immigration reform movement) they don't want to let their guard down. Across the country, advocates plan for more actions, coordinated through an increasingly sophisticated communications network, to build a groundswell in favor of reform. For example, on Jan. 22 on Long Island, a hotspot in the immigration wars, the ecumenical Council of Churches plans to release a major statement on the need for "immigration solutions." High-ranking elected officials, including Republicans, seem to be echoing activists' renewed call for an immigration overhaul, despite the country's economic woes and the failure of an immigration reform law in the U.S. Senate as recently as the summer of 2007. Condoleezza Rice, former secretary of state, has said the failure of immigration reform, which she considered important to national security, was her biggest regret. Republican senators Mel Martinez and John McCain have both said they feel their party must tone down some members' hard-line rhetoric on immigration in order to be competitive among immigrant voters. Meanwhile, the office of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has placed what looks to be a sketch of a comprehensive immigration reform bill on its list of 10 pieces of legislation with which it hopes to kick off Congress under the new president, according to American Prospect magazine. Any immigration reform package is expected to include some sort of path to citizenship for the country's estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants, even if it is after they are made to wait at "the back of the line" -- behind those who applied through the usual channels. For this reason, those who favor strict immigration restrictions typically oppose any attempt to change immigration laws, even if the new legislation also includes tougher border security and enforcement measures. They see reform as an excuse to deliver amnesty to illegal immigrants. The restrictionists, as they are known, who are at least as well-organized and politically savvy as the pro-reform activists, have successfully torpedoed past attempts to overhaul immigration by jamming legislative phone lines and inboxes with their petition and letter-writing drives. The result of this year's immigration wars may come down to which side puts in place the more robust and technologically sophisticated grassroots political network. Grassfire.org is one online group already established to fight Obama's agenda. It has begun organizing around specific immigration-related campaigns, such as the group's petition to Congress to finish the border fence, with close to 280,000 signatures. Grassfire's omnibus petition declaring resistance to Obama's agenda reads in part, "I resist ... open border anarchy, including amnesty for illegal aliens and promotion of multi-nation 'unions.'" © 2009 New America Media All rights reserved.
