Bring out your dead and dance to the rollicking and completely uncommon
sound of Death Mask, the very alive quartet whose style is one of those that
is hard to place into anyone's dead generic category. The band fuses
together a mix of rock, jazz and surf, all with an upbeat yet melancholy
overtone that would shake and rattle even the driest bones.
Death Mask is comprised of the alluringly beautiful singer Katy Cunningham,
guitarist Mike Biskup, bassist Boris Veysman and drummer Steve Dans,
together forming one of the most unique bands in the New York City region.
Evil Doers, the band's first full-length album, sets the perfect tone with
the haunting Boat, a vibrating fantasy trip accompanied by Cunningham's
smooth textured vocals, and an unexpected hard rock twist that breaks up the
down-tempo flawlessly. That boat flows gently along down Hades' river of
doom with the up and down Threat and Promise, the eerily seductive Safe, and
the slow and steady summer-on-the-beach feel of We Won't Sleep. Then there
is Old World, which takes a wonderful classic waltz and spins it in a
spidery web of modern rock, while the aptly placed Goodbye puts us in a room
with ghostly visions of tango dancers serenading the living with their eerie
visions of how much fun one could have in the afterlife.
And Death Mask does just that, gives us fun, gives us great songs and drags
the music world out of the grave and into the ballroom.
