[09 May 2009 | Saturday]
In the final hour of writing a dissertation, trying to squeeze in a few performances with the youth.  Here is 1 on Saturday May 16 for the 40th Anniversary of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.  Come out if you can, should be fun.

ultramagnetic.

"UCLA Asian American Studies Center To Celebrate Its 40th Anniversary"

The UCLA Asian American Studies Center will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with an outdoor reception and program on Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 4-7pm at Dickson Plaza on the UCLA campus. The event will also pay special tribute to Director and Professor Don T. Nakanishi, who will be retiring after 19 years of distinguished leadership of the Asian American Studies Center and a 35-year career at UCLA. The event is free and open to the public. Please visit the web site:
http://www.aasc.ucla.edu/archives/40thcelebration.htm

The UCLA Asian American Studies Center was established during the 1969-1970 academic year as a result of faculty, student, alumni, and community advocacy. "The Center," the founding steering committee wrote in its proposal to the UCLA administration in 1969, "will hopefully enrich the experience of the entire university by contributing to an understanding of the long neglected history, rich cultural heritage, and present position of Asian Americans in our society."

Through its programs in research, teaching, publications, library and archival collecting, leadership training, and community partnerships, the Center has pursued its original mission, and has sought to enrich and inform not only the UCLA community, but also an array of broader audiences and sectors in the state, the nation, and internationally.

Today, UCLA is the largest and most comprehensive research and teaching institution in the field of Asian American Studies. It has the largest faculty with over forty tenured professors in twenty-five departments across the university, including the Department of Asian American Studies, which was established in 2004. The Department teaches over 60 classes annually, enrolls over 3,000 students, and offers an undergraduate major and minor, and a MA degree. UCLA annually produces more MA theses and PhD dissertations on Asian American Studies topics than any university in the nation.

The UCLA Asian American Studies Center Press publishes two national journals, Amerasia Journal and AAPI Nexus, and has released over 200 books, reports, and bibliographies, including classics like Roots: An Asian American Reader (1971), and the National Asian Pacific American Political Almanac. The Center's Library and Special Collections are national resource treasures of the field of Asian American Studies. The Center continues its legacy of building mutually beneficial partnerships with a wide array of organizations, museums, and other programs in Southern California and nationwide, and its innovative web-based programs like the US-China Media Brief have a world-wide reach. The Center's endowment, which has been generously supported by thousands of donors over the years, includes six endowed academic chairs, and numerous fellowships, scholarships, research funds and academic prizes.

The Center has produced a number of renowned leaders, scholars, and writers during its four decades, including Morgan Chu, the nation's top intellectual property attorney; Lisa Hasegawa, National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development; Stewart Kwoh, Asian Pacific American Legal Center; Judy Chu, Chair, California Board of Equalization;
Chanchanit (Chancee) Martorell, Thai CDC; Angela Oh, civll rights leader; Joel Jacinto, Search to Involve Pilipino Americans; Yen Espiritu, Professor, UCSD; Gary Okihiro, Professor, Columbia; Franklin Odo, Director, Smithsonian Institution; Justin Lin, film-maker; Jeff Chang, writer; Erin Kahunawaika..ala Wright, University of Hawaii-Manoa, among many others.

A recently concluded external review of the Center by a national team of scholars concluded that, "The Asian American Studies Center at UCLA is indisputably the leading Asian American Studies center in the country and an exemplary ethnic studies center of any kind, the gold standard against which all the rest are measured."

Award-winning news anchor and UCLA Professor Tritia Toyota, California Assembly members Mike Eng and Warren Furutani and UCLA Vice Chancellor Claudia Mitchell-Kernan will be among the featured speakers at the 40th anniversary event. The Chinatown Kung Fu and Lion Dance Troupe, Samahang Modern, and others also will perform.

RSVP is requested. Please call (310) 825-2974 or email aascrsvp@aasc.ucla.edu. Parking is available at Lots 2 and 3. Rates are $9 per day. For more information, please contact: Jolie Chea, (310) 825-2974 or jchea@aasc.ucla.edu

Peace fam,

Doing double duty this Saturday Jan. 31 for Lunar New Year in Chinatown.

#1: Chinatown Kung Fu & Lion Dance Troupe @ the annual Chinatown Golden Dragon Parade
Parade begins at 2pm.  We'll be in the 2nd division, entry # 215, so we'll probably be @ the parade's start by the Chinatown Library (Hill & Ord) around 2:45-3pm.  The parade ends at Broadway & Ord.  Everyone, youth and adults, has been working very hard all year to improve, and after like a million performances these past 2 months for Lunar New Year (although we had to turn down Cal Poly Pomona and America's Got Talent), it would be great to come back home and perform in front of friends and family at the event we've always done.

www.groups.myspace.com/chinatownliondancetroupe

#2: DJ UltraMan @ Grand Star for "Double Standard"
I'll be spinning from 11pm-12am at the annual community show and benefit and the famous Grand Star in Chinatown (off Broadway btw Bernard and College).  Not sure what I'm playing yet, it'll be crowd rocking, and funky.

Hope to see you this weekend, xin nian kuai le!

Peace,

benji.

Presenting this Weds. 10/29/08 at the 40th Anniversary of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State:
"Consciousness, Community, Liberation: Fulfilling the Promise of '68"

With comrades Ramon Martinez (Ph.D. Candidate, UCLA) and Professor Patrick Camangian (USF), we'll be presenting our own critical teaching and organizing efforts with youth and families from Chinatown, Boyle Heights and Crenshaw communities of Los Angeles.

This conference is particularly important as it commemorates the struggles that our indigenous, Black, Chican@, Latin@ and Asian predecessors endured to basically establish the 1st ethnic studies program in the US. It won't be your typical conference, with artistic displays, performances, teach-ins, and media workshops that document and reinvent the work that the 3rd World Liberation Front undertook 40 years ago.

In solidarity and struggle,

VAALA Moon Festival Celebration (since 2003).
Established in 2003 and co-presented annually by Nguoi Viet Daily News, Viet Nam California Radio (VNCR), and Thế Kỷ 21 Magazine, the art contest invites children ages 5 to 15 to use paints, crayons or color pencils to create their artworks.  The contest drew around 300 contestants every year.  The contest day ends with an Awards Night of musical performances, dragon dances and a lantern march for families to celebrate the Moon Festival together.

Venue: Nguoi Viet Community Room, next to Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) Studio.

Address: 14771 Moran Street, Westminster, CA 92683; corner of Bolsa.  Big intersection is Bolsa and Bushard.

Audience: The venue seats 250-300.  The event is free admission.

Time: Show starts at 6:00pm and expects to end at 8:30pm.  Lion dance is the "grand finale" of the Moon Festival.  Our performance time is about 7:30pm.

Hey friends,

I know Asian Pacific Heritage Month is here, so I just wanted to mention that an  organization I'm a part of, the Chinatown Kung Fu & Lion Dance Troupe, is available for lion dance performances in So Cal.

Based in Los Angeles Chinatown, our troupe is multi-generational and multi-ethnic, involving youth (elementary to high school) and activists of color from around Los Angeles. Our lion dance style is southern Fut San style, and our kung fu style is Choy Lee Fut, both of which are derived from Southern Shaolin.

Our Troupe principles come from our late Sifu Ronald Wong, emphasizing health, culture, self-defense, and serving the community. As such, our programs are free for youth, and we offer a scholarship for working-class youth of color. We're neither for or non-profit, and we depend entirely on our income from performances and private donations to run our Troupe.

We've performed for a number of community and private events throughout LA county, including APALA, Carson Student Movement/AADAP, Dia De Los Muertos, Golden Cafe, and parades in Chinatown and San Gabriel.

For bookings, please contact Sissy Trinh at:
