well a few years ago, me and olly played bass and keys for our old friend Ian Wilde's band 'home third light'. File under 'criminally undiscovered'. This video is Ian playing my fav tune of his, yesterday night, at an acoustic session in a mate's shop in Bath. It's called 'overcoat ill-fit' and is a work of genius. If you like Bon iver, jose gonzalez etc, then click on this link : Ian Wilde - overcoat ill-fit .

well it's all been happening recently. last week we were down in ladroke grove for the  mastering of the new laroca album ' valley of the bears'. It was mastered by a top guy called er Guy @ Electric mastering, who's recently done the new Doves and Jon Hopkins LPs, and he's done an awesome job. I'll be postin the results up here soon.... we're really chuffed with it. oh and it looks like it'll be out in June.

..and then the next day we were back in Ladbroke Grove for a Laroca / Introducing gig. Me, Matt and Mike the drummer are in both of those acts, so it was a busy - and ace night for us. The Introducing thing is such a fun thing to be part of and seems to be really snowballing at the mo and we've got some exciting festivals comin up this summer - including Bestival and Camp Bestival. Oh yeah and it was doubly nice for me to meet a guy i really admire (and fellow bassist) called Flevans. Top man.

..and then the other thing at the moment is i'm eagerly anticipating my debut on bass in the band of an awesome Senegalese Kora player called Jali Fily Cissokho. It's such a thrill to be part of that. The first time i went round to his place to rehearse i was sitting there thinkin 'sh*t i'd pay good money to have a private performance like this!'..so to be actually playin in his Coute Diomboulou Band is brilliant. Anyway, the gig's next Tuesday at MOMO in London..details here. Needless to say, if you like smiley, beautiful and funky African music - Come!:

Date(s): 10th March 2009
Time: 20:30
Venue: Momo | Kemia Bar | 25 Heddon Street, London W1

big love

hi, my name's rob and i'm addicted to The Wire. (late-starter, currently at season 3 ep2, no spoilers please ;-) )

so anyway we were recently finishing off 'unit 125'* - our cheeky littly ghetto funk number and , whilst thinkin up some lyrics on the spot for Tarik to sing, The Wire came out .. except i only realised afterwards the character's called 'brother mouzone' not 'brother moves on'..heheh.
so anyway...enjoy

*named after a combination of our rehearsal room in Balham and a work unit (danwei) mentionned in lijia zhang's marvellous 'socialism is great'...well, obviously ;-)

eh up
it's been a while, soz. anyway, we've been busy beavering and lurking, and somehow managing to play gigs on the only 2 days this 'summer' when it actually felt like summer. (see pics of Secret Garden and Festinho 2008).

yeah and we have news. first of all as you can see from the other blog i just posted, there's a cool new Just Music compilation out, featuring a track called Valley of the Bears, which also just happens to be the title of the next album, which we're finishing off sooooooon, very soon. (more on that , er, soon).

second, there's another wicked comp comin out very soon with us on it . it features people like..

THOM YORKE (RADIOHEAD)
NATACHA ATLAS
TRENTEMOLLER
CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA
DANIEL AGUST (GUS GUS)
TINDERSTICKS
SIMON LORD FROM SIMIAN
CRAIG ARMSTRONG
JOHN METCALFE
MARTINA TOPLEY BIRD
..and US!

and is DUE FOR RELEASE WORLDWIDE AND ON I-TUNES...SEPTEMBER 29TH 2008

..and if that isn't enough exciting news for one blog, we're ALSO dj-ing at the Big Chill Bar on Tues 14th October, to help launch Animat's 'Riverbed Road' single, which we did a remix for.

AND THEN, we're playing a gig in Oxford on THURSDAY 4TH DECEMBER, as guests of our good friends Skylarkin Soundsystem, and also as support for Introducing, who are recreating DJ Shadow's entirely-made-of-samples classic album Endtroducing, live, with a full band who's lineup includes rob (er that's me), matt, and mike from laroca as well as an amazing chinese keyboardist called Andy and an actor and a sax player called Mick with an ace beard and a gorrjuss female vocalist called Jenni.

The project is the brainchild of Matt - who's been spending most of his evenings for the last year or so locating the original samples from the album, re-assembling the album from scratch in Ableton, and then charting the whole thing out for a band to play.

So, er, yeah. Come. oh and it's only a fiver to get in, which is a right blimmin bargain if you ask me. (oh yeah and that gets you free into the post gig clubnight with JOHN KENNEDY dj-ing too)

right, back to beavering
big love
