Gilman Booking Newsletter, December 2009
INTRO
We want to begin this newsletter by stating that this is not a "Gilman" newsletter, but a "Gilman Booking" newsletter, which means that this is meant to be representative of the Gilman booking department and not the club as a whole.
GILMAN BENEFIT SHOWS
Some of you may be asking, why does Gilman suddenly need so many benefits in 2009? We already had one successful benefit show at the Balazo/Sub-Mission Gallery in San Francisco, which was booked by Gilman's main hardcore booker Max Montez, as well as the far less successful Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser that drew a very small crowd, even though the food was excellent (healthy and tasty) and easily worth more than the measly $5 donation asked, but we won't dwell on that one event. Now, we have three benefit shows to end the year, taking place on December 25th, 26th, and 27th. Each of these three shows features the younger, newer bands who began to make quite an impact on the club in 2009, and they are, aside from the hardcore scene, one of the most consistent and devoted of the many scenes that Gilman plays host to on a weekly basis.
No, Gilman is not in trouble, and there is nothing currently threatening it's existence. We are coming off one of the biggest years in the club's history in fact (2008), and while 2009 didn't play out as well in terms of draws and sold out shows, we did have some memorable moments like the ZERO BOYS weekend, THORNS OF LIFE show, EXTORTION/IRON LUNG show, THE ZEROS, CRUDE from Japan, COFFINS from Japan, CEREMONY on Halloween, another packed CITIZEN FISH show, HELLBASTARD from England, one final BABYLAND show, TSOL, CHRIST ON PARADE/ELDOPA, and so on. The benefits are an attempt to make up for some of the shortcomings we experienced over the course of this past year, and to keep us as close to the break even point as possible headed into 2010. It's really something that should have been happening a long time ago, based on what we saw in the previous decade's year end financial reports. Maybe that type of information was less accessible in years past, but for whatever reason these types of last minute benefits were never initiated. If Gilman can avoid experiencing huge losses on a yearly basis, then it's going to be around much longer, and it will continue to host many of the bands who have volunteered to play these benefit shows for the club in the years to come.
COLLECTIVE or a NON-PROFIT?
Gilman is neither a collective or a non-profit. Gilman is "not for profit", which would be similar to how Maximumrocknroll views itself, but neither of us is an official non-profit, which involves paperwork, accountants, and lawyers in some cases. We are not able to receive tax deductible donations on our own, and instead we have to rely on less than efficient middle men organizations like Indy Arts in order for our supporters to make tax deductible donations. What is Gilman then, and isn't it one of Berkeley's longest running collectives? Gilman is basically run by 5 people and if it were an actual collective, then that would be thee collective, with the possible addition of maybe three or four bookers who are currently putting in a respectable amount of labor in regards to the project, but that is almost the opposite of how Gilman functions. At Gilman, those who work the most, and I'm speaking for the last three to three and half years that I've been there, have no more say so or influence in official decision making than any traveler punk or even a yuppie who could manage to attend at least two meetings (you can't vote until your second meeting). Is that a bad thing? Well maybe, if you consider the turnover rate of Gilman staff, especially the hardest working contributors to the project. Or is it actually a little bit of a good thing? If you are not currently volunteering at Gilman and you have some ideas of your own on how it could be better run, then this might be a good thing since all you have to do is round up about 10 friends who are willing to attend at least two meetings, and then you can pretty much make up any crazy rule you wanted to. Chances are that with 10 votes on your side, you'd win the vote. Hell, if you could get 15 friends together, then you might even be able to change club bylaws. The folks who book the shows and coordinate the shows, and the folks in the stoar might oppose you, but their votes would carry no more weight than your 10 (or 15), regardless of how much time and energy they put into the project. It's really that easy.
Gilman is a member of NoBWAC - http://www.nobawc.org - but that has more to do with a former staffer's (Jesse Townley aka Luscious) belief that they are an important organization for Gilman to be a part of organizationally and otherwise, and he is spot on in his thought process, but the irony has to be in the fact that most of Gilman's volunteers and its key holders (actual staff) are very uninformed about the ways a successful collective operates.
BOOKING STAFF
Here's the new booking schedule as head into 2010.
Tuesday from 7pm-9pm: Jay Unidos & Mike Avilez
Wednesday from 7pm-9pm: Jeff Armstrong, Danny Bailey, and Robert Eggplant
Thursday from 7pm-9pm: Max Montez, Joey 'Peaceful War', and Matt Kadi
Thanks,
Jay Unidos Gilman Booking 2009

June 27, 2009 By: admin Category: BlogV. VALE RE/SEARCH BLOG 6-26-09 THE ZEROS at GILMAN STREET, plus NEGATIVE TREND and THE LEWD Sometimes when a band comes to town, memories get activated so strongly that decades (in this case, three) seemingly get instantly erased. It’s magic when a band not only plays an entire set of what now appear to be the “classics” they must have always been - where every song seems simple, minimalist, perfect - but everyone still looks great. And now, the playing seems effortless and sometimes blazingly fast while barely looking at the guitar fretboard. Thirty-two years! A real band, the Zeros play fully in synch — instinctual choreography without prior rehearsal — very captivating yet not contrived — just people playing together in harmony and intuitively doing what’s “right.” Gilman Street itself is a marvel of Punk Countercultural longevity. For the first time I noticed the facade — the tan corner building at 924 Gilman Street proclaims itself to be a “Caning Shop” - Chair Caning - Rush - Splint - Wicker - Repairs and Supplies - How-To Books - Basketry Classes.” What a perfect cover for a Punk Rock Club. Outside at 8:30pm three men had set up two BBQ grills and were serving both meatatarian and vegetarian burgers and hot dogs, prepared on separate grills with separate spatulas. Unbelievably, they were free, no strings attached. I had two vegetarian patties with catsup, served on a napkin (I’m avoiding anything made from grains). Amazing. Craig Gray, Negative Trend guitarist, came up and and I mentioned how, back in ‘77, he had been an amazing guitarist while still a teenager in the band Grand Mal, which I had briefly played bass in. He talked about how nowadays kids learn how to play guitar in “rock class.” You go to a rock ‘n’ roll school and in one room you hear Led Zeppelin, the next room the Beatles.” I said, “Well, maybe they can learn how to play much faster.” Craig said, “But, I’ve always been someone who stayed in my room and played guitar — I still do that. But I’ve gone out with women who were amazing piano players, playing very difficult classical music, but I ask them to play something THEY wrote and — they can’t. I’d much rather be able to play AND write songs … come up with tunes. Sometimes it seems that musicians who aren’t quite so good are the ones who can write the songs. Well, it seems better to be able to do BOTH.” I agreed, and indeed, find it difficult to understand why people who are so technically proficient just can’t write original songs. Weird… Made it inside the dark club and Javier Escovedo came up (Zeros guitarist). I don’t think I’d seen him for thirty years, but he looked good. He said, “My younger brother Mario came up and he’s working our ‘merch’ table.” I said, “Alejandro (guitarist for the NUNS, 1977 S.F. Punk Band) is your older brother, right? How much older is he?” “He said, “Oh, I think he’s six or seven years older.” I said, “Aren’t you related to Coke Escovedo?” “Yes, he and Pete (Escovedo) are my half brothers. Their sister is Sheila E; she’s worked with Prince and others.” I said, “All the Escovedos are musicians; that certainly must be genetic.” He said, “I did an interview with the L.A. Times yesterday, and told ‘em that my mother said she would be ashamed if everyone in the family WASN’T a musician.” Wow … that sounds like a better way to raise kids… Ricky Williams, legendary Sleepers vocalist (one of the best rich male voices during Punk, anywhere) had a son Zach, and he got up and sang two songs with Negative Trend. Penelope Houston (Avengers vocalist) was there and she whispered, “It’s so weird seeing him sing — some of the facial expressions are just like Ricky’s — but Zach has long hair. Very strange.” I talked to Zach before the show and he said he was gonna try to sing more from the diaphragm … this saves your throat from being damaged. Negative Trend has a new vocalist who is full of fire and passion, and tonight featured on drums Tony Sales Jr (the son of TONY SALES, who I had interviewed thirty years ago when he and his brother Hunt backed Iggy Pop on tour). Tony said he had lived thirteen years in Wisconsin on a farm, and had recently moved to Berkeley. In Wisconsin he had a Country Music band, and in Berkeley he’s also playing jazz (and hopefully will play more Negative Trend concerts). He certainly is an amazing drummer, just like his dad… We also saw the last part of the set by the Lewd, and it was pile-driving, just like the band was thirty years ago. The Zeros’ powerhouse set raced against time, with only a few seconds between each song. Great sound balance, vocals totally decipherable, Simply a great band, highly underrated, with world-class songs and stage presence — but nobody is “full of themselves.” A handful of people from the Seventies were in the audience, and some had brought their kids, including Baba Chenelle, who drove up from San Diego with his wife, 15-year-old daughter and younger son (?). We talked to an older Hispanic woman, dressed in stylish black, who said she had seen the band in the old days and liked them because she too is Hispanic — she thought of them as “the Mexican Ramones.” After tonight’s set of A-list songs, I’d have to agree that the Zeros deserve much wider, international appreciation. Maybe they’ll get it; it’s not too late… We drove home to San Francisco over the Bay Bridge with their beautiful songs reverberating in our memories… Time is a mystery, isn’t it? [The End]

Booking Tips:
If you have a band that wants to play Gilman, then check out our first 16 friends on this account because those are our bookers. Do not write this account if you want a response in a reasonable amount of time. Do a little digging, and find out which booker fits your style. Some bookers have a style of their own, and so your band is going to have a different experience depending on who ends up booking and promoting your show(s).
We try to make this process easier by having different bookers for Pop Punk, Hardcore, Grindcore, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Electronic, Noise, IDM, Post Punk, and so on.
Gilman has more bookers now, covering more styles of music than at any other time in it's history. Gone are the days of two and three bookers fighting over the same shows, trust us. Get proactive.
Door Prices:
Contrary to the rumor mill, Gilman prices are not $8 to $10 for every show, but they do start at $7 (our minimum door). Why? Are we greedy? Well first of all Gilman is not for profit, and operates with the expectation of some loss every year, but the $5 doors for 20 years had actually put the club's future in jeopardy due to too many years of massive financial losses. It was also affecting the club's ability to book the types of bands needed to pack a club of Gilman's size. So over the last couple of years we have raised the door prices slightly depending on the show. Our biggest shows (people paid) the last two years have all been $10 doors actually, so there seems to be a lot of Gilman members who don't mind paying a little more on occasion, but we are also doing our best to keep the door prices from getting too unreasonable.
Contrary to popular belief, our landlord has never stopped raising the rent for 22 years. It's almost $5000 a month, and soon will be that, and that is just the beginning of our monthly costs. People think for some reason that Gilman has a cool hook up when it comes to rent, but that is untrue.
For cheaper shows, you can go to Yer Haus or BRS, etc., and if you are a band and you would rather not play $7 shows for some reason, then contact us anyway because almost every Gilman booker also books at those other venues. Contrary to yet another rumor...damn rumor mills.
Disclaimer:
If you call us up and try to tell us how it was better back when OPIV, Crimpshrine, Jawbreaker, Blatz, Green Day, etc. played the club, and you're 18 or 19 years old and weren't even born when those bands were around (in some cases), then we are going to call bullshit on you and your little band. Please take no offense, but it's 2009. Let's talk about the here and now, and booking shows in the future, okay? Awesome.
