It is often said to become a true artist one has to make a journey to embrace ones inner-soul and find inspiration along the way. Having relocated twelve months ago from Melbourne to Italy, Pete Ross (the former guitarist from highly popular Dan Brodie & The Broken Arrows), has done just that.tracing his musical and family ancestry, after he packed up his life and moved in a quest to find all these things and more. Pete has rapidly forged his own career in Italy by signing to Steamroller record label and has been touring extensively to an ever-expanding and adoring Italian crowd. His Australianness is a curiosity to his fans, but his Sicilian roots have embedded him in the local culture. Pete has now briefly returned to Australia to release his album he recorded with his band Pete Ross & The Paesanos Six String Suicide and to undertake a national tour, reaching The Toff in Melbourne for an album launch on Thursday July 2nd, before he returns to Italy in August. Pete Ross & The Paesanos comprise of Pete Ross (guitar/lead vocals), Matt Green (guitar/backing vocals), Monique Boggia (keys/backing vocals), Dave Watkins (drums), and Graham Frankliin (double bass). Melbourne musical luminaries Matt Walker and Liz Stringer also make guest appearances on the CD

Pete Ross & The Paesanos - SIX STRING SUICIDE

ENGLISH VERSION

I came that night to see this Australian guy without knowing anything about him, only because my mate Dimi Dero (from D.D.INC) recommended me to this gig he was also booking. "Come, it's gonna be great" he said. There's some people you trust more than others (and when it comes from a guy whose band released such a good album as "Sisyphus, window cleaning", you know the man knows about good music !).

There's vey few people on this planet able to cover "Rings of Fire" without looking like a dwarf trying to climb up the Everest with the help of a teaspoon. In this sort of Country Folk there's plethora of candidates these days. But Pete Ross is different ! Because where most of the others hide behind an avalanche of effects (that stink), Pete Ross just stands right here. Just right ! Him, six strings and his voice. Certainly with the addition of talent and charisma as well! On his own, in front of the audience. Standing in the bar, the eyes in the eyes.

It's been ages that I drag myself around to see some gigs but here : this guy with almost nothing...just chords that anyone else could play.. this guy has carried me into something very special, something that only belongs to him. After this mix of emotions, I've ended up with a stupid smile on my face, just happy that I was actually here to live this.

Ok so I have totally lost track of time....but I'm still here in Italy and finding it very hard to leave! So let me re-trace my steps back to the summer of 08.

In my last post I was preparing to head back to the south of Italy and play at a festival called, La Notte Bianca di Melpignano.  That turned out to be an amazing event and despite the intense heat and humidity, several thousand people attended.  You can check out a video from that night at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW3TT_DKv10 or it's up on my myspace. That was followed by another 3 shows in the Salento region, which encompasses the main southern cities of Brindisi, Taranto and Lecce. By the end of July I was heading back up to the north of Italy where I played 3 shows with El Bastardo in the provences' of Imperia, Genova and Como.
The show in Como was at a place called Birimbo, a bar/pizzeria right on the lake with the most spectacular view!

August is the annual summer holiday period in Europe, so I did what all good Italians do and headed for the sea!  I spent four glorious weeks in the Provence of Lecce, staying yet again with my friends (and their friends who come every year) at their magical Masseria Lobello, enjoying many days and nights of eating, drinking, dancing and singing.  There were never less than 8 to 10 people staying there at one time and some beautiful friendships were formed. I found a lot of inspiration and did a lot of writing and as a result I have almost finished my next album which includes a song called "Lobello Cries". My friends were so chuffed that they adopted the song as the anthem for their Masseria.

It was extremely difficult to say goodbye to Lobello but it was time to gather my adventurous spirit, pack "Betty" and head north for my French/Spanish tour. The first leg was a double headline with my French compatriot, Dom Daleegaw! Together we played shows in Basse Normandie, Bretagne concluding in Provence.  From there I made a lightning dash back to Italy for a performance/interview on Como's local station, Espansione TV before heading solo down to Spain. It was my first time there and  I wasn't disappointed! Warm and wonderful people greeted me every step of the way, a tour that included shows in Barcelona, Valencia, Vittoria and Mont Blanc. Despite catching the flu somewhere between Catalunya and The Basque Country, it was a most memorable experience and hopefully the first of many tours to come in Spain.

Upon leaving Spain on 5 October, I was well and truly spent! All I wanted to do was sleep for a week and it's exactly what I did, graciously hosted by Mariana who now lives in Puyvert, Provence. By this stage it was also time for my Dad to return to Australia and thus I started to contemplate where I would base myself in Italy. Feeling completely revived, I left Provence on 14 October, drove straight to Milan and started looking for a place to live.
Last weekend I played a show near La Spezia with two Canadian songbirds, Selina Martin and the Great Aunt Ida. We had a fantastic time together, spending an extra day there exploring the area including the famous cinqueterra coastline. From there we drove to Figino Serenza where we were a part of a mammoth event, the fourth annual Townes Van Zandt tribute night. With around 30 performers from around the globe including a great Texan songwriter by the name of Eric Taylor, it was yet another truly memorable experience, the show concluding with all of us on stage together performing Dead Flowers.  The first Townes tribute held in Italy was attended by Townes's son, JT Van Zandt!

Well I have found a place to live(for now).  It's Sunday evening, 26 October and I am writing this from my apartment in Milan.  After 6 months it feels good to finally unpack my bags have my own space. Last Friday I signed a 3yr international licensing deal for my album with Italian label, Steamroller and am now preparing to release that early next year. Coming up I have a short trip to London and Paris, playing a couple of shows and hopefully making a lot of contacts. At the end of November I will be going back to my second home in Lecce (Masseria Lobello), where I will playing some shows as well as staying there for Xmas. The album should be released in Australia around April 09.

Had a blast in France. The gig in Normandy was put together by the Western Partners Line dancing association. I did a set in between the bands 2 sets and the band joined me for my last song which was awesome! As much as I'm not a fan of line dancing they were really appreciative and it was a pleasure to play for them. I hung out for a few days after with my new French friend, Dom Daleegaw and we drank and jammed alot. As a result we are putting together a show to tour France in September.

My car is getting a real workout. I've managed to clock up over 8000km in 6 weeks! I think I now know Italy better than most locals. After leaving France I went to Torino in the north of Italy and met up with another friend, El Bastardo. We are gonna do some shows together at the end of this month and I might be going to Germany in October in support of his band. Also in the north I played my first festival gig in a very beautiful place called Diano D'Alba. It's a little village perched on a mountain top and the views are just breathtaking.

From Alba in the north, via a few stops on the way, I travelled to Lecce in the south where I played a couple of shows. One of them was at this institution called Manifatture Knos. Check out the website if you get a chance. They do some fantastic stuff. http://www.manifattureknos.org (It's in Italian of course!). I stayed in Lecce with some wonderful people at their Masseria Lobello and I think it's a place where I will be spending alot more time in future.

That was last week and on the weekend just gone I met up with my Dad in Rome and we did another two TV appearances. I don't have the footage yet but will post it up on my myspace when I do. Otherwise you can see it streaming here http://www.international.rai.it/cristianita/index.php?sezione=puntata . Just fast forward past the bits where the presenter asks me a heap of questions and I look completely dumbfounded. Or you can watch it and amuse yourself.

From Rome I went to visit some family about an hour south in Formia. Very nice there...great beaches, great food etc. Now I back at the Masseria Lobello (what did I tell you) in Lecce again and am preparing to play my second festival gig on Saturday night. It's called Notte Bianca and I'm opening for a artist called Piers Faccini who has just finished a American tour supporting Ben Harper. Now for a week of relaxation!
