More details:

Soda Men

Scorching riffs, sharp songs and more hooks than velcro

The Soda Men emerged out of the ashes of semi-legendary Cardiff country-rock outfit Six Sided Men who, in their turn, emerged out of other semi-legendary Cardiff bands like The Pier, The Third Uncles, Statues of Us, the River Ghosts and The Spasm Band. Formed in 2002 The Soda Men stitch together a curious mixture of country, rockabilly, folk, pop (and the merest hint of seventies-style glam!) and have established a reputation for storming live gigs on both sides of the (Bristol) Channel. Their debut album ‘Moon’ also highlights the deft and intriguing songcraft of frontman Ayres.

"Really cool" Kirk Brandon
"A killer band in the flesh" Jo Manning, South Wales Echo

The Royston Boys

Debut gig for brand new band who weave folk rock and gospel elements together in a slightly trippy way.

Guto Dafis

Singer melodeon-player and storyteller Guto Dafis (Toreth, Watermelons, Vinegar Flies), plays his own and traditional Welsh songs in a spirit of energy, humour and wonder.
“strong, supple and vigorous, he performs with a rare wryness and warmth” - Philip Freeman

FANCY LEARNING TO MELT?
Meltdown prides itself on a) meltdown down barriers between all forms of music and performance and b) encouraging experiment and collaboration. We're currently planning 2009's Yurt gigs and welcome suggestions for acts that will work in the glorious but slightly confined space of the Yurt (i.e. no full drum kits) and who cover the whole spectrum of genres (and generations). See below for examples of us melting down barriers between styles of music and performance with reckless abandon!!!  So if you're a spoon player, a comedian, a hurdy gurdy afficionado, a table magician, a jazz-electronica experience or a klezmer-punk-cajun Take That tribute band get in touch!

WHAT IS MELTDOWN?
For 20 years Cardiff ’s legendary Meltdown Club has been creating space for musicians and performers to experiment, collaborate and entertain. Founded in 1986 Meltdown has been responsible for over 1000 gigs (including roadshows to London and Scotland), a compilation album (3 stars in ‘Q’!), and early gigs by now legendary performers including Catatonia's first ever, Sian Evans of Kosheen, jazz guitarist Dylan Fowler, comedian Rob Brydon, Massive Attack collaborator Nicolette, Victorian English Gentlemen’s Club, Wales Folk Diva Julie Murphy, No Fit State Circus and a clutch of Super Furries. Recent acts to use Meltdown as a space to innovate, experiment and entertain include the Threatmantics, Spencer McGarry, Cate le Bon, Cakehole Presley, Stepping Out Theatre Company, Optimus Prime, Lily Green, Mr & Mrs Clark, Stacey Blythe, Beatbox Fozzy, Bec&Beth (Hot Puppies), Wonderbrass, Pamela Wyn Shannon, Applefish and Plant Duw. And all this from a club that is organised by a bunch of unpaid enthusiasts, runs almost wholly on self-generated money, and melts down barriers between styles of music and performance with reckless abandon!!! Yay for us!!!!

“Mr and Mrs Clark are not merely characters: they are artworks, constructs, models. Their faces are, literally, masks, but those unnerving semi-transparent masks where you can never really tell what is someone’s real face and what is plastic”. David Adams, Guardian Arts correspondent.

Gideon Conn

following dazzling performances at both the Swn Festival and the Christmas Meltdown in 2007 we're deliriously delighted to welcome back this incredibly charismatic Manchester indie/folk/hip-hop rising star.

“An eccentric, enigmatic genius who performs an unforgettable mix of jazz, funk, hip-hop and scat on acoustic guitar. Astonishing tunes and bewilderingly brilliant stage presence This Mancunian legend-to-be is set for Badly Drawn Boy-esque levels of crossover success."
Glasswerk Manchester

The biggest smiles of the festival could be found at Gideon Conn’s gig at the Buffalo Bar. He lit up the room with his enchanting stage performance, and scat rap, acoustic songs.

www.tastyfanzine.org.uk review of Swn Festival 2007

"simply HAS to be seen. An eccentric, enigmatic genius"

GigsUnlimited.co.uk

"a fantastic hip-hop meets folk rock vibe."

Gideon is easily the most entertaining musician in Britain at the moment. What's not to love? He grooves a hip-hop/folk/pop mash-up, and his shows feature a bit of stand up comedy and audience participation that will always having you leaving with a smile. There's literally nothing to compare it to.

Gideon strikes the perfect balance between laid-back and lacing up your best dancing shoes. Blending summer time funk with laid-back hip hop, a touch of scatting and the off beat charm of a young Woody Allen, expect the truly unexpected, from slices of stand-up to Barry White and Outkast covers.....

Club Fandango.

Conn’s take on music is that anything can, and should, go: Innovative, fun, and skilful stuff.....
