http://www.nu-mag.com/2009/05/17/adventure-rock-at...If you’re attempting to categorize the band’s sound by listening to their first album, The Reckit, good luck trying. Calling them experimental is really only the tip of the iceberg, because Muchos Backflips! won’t provide you with a standard track. via AddToAny Share Button

Below are some the reviews/writeups we received as a result of being a part of NXNE.. entertaining to say the least!

Muchos Backflips! @ The Bovine Sex Club by: Andy Schmidt - torontoindie.com
I really didn't care to research this band prior to attending the show, only because their name was the cover on the book that sold me. Muchos Backflips? How can you go wrong? And I didn't. This band certainly surprised nearly everyone in the Bovine that Saturday night.
Visually, this band had diversity written all over it. Why? I'll break it down. This Texas five-piece included a drummer that looked a lot like Eddie Murphy, a lead guitarist who looked like a biology major, a bassist who looked hand-picked from a folk-ska unit, a trumpet player who looked like she just came from a law firm, and a saxophone player that could have been at a Slipknot rehearsal before coming to the show. That's diverse enough for me, and so were the tunes.
For starters, very few bands can impress the hell out of me without any lyrics. Instrumental compositions are a difficult genre to be in, especially for a rock group. Much like jazz, the notes and rhythms must carry the attention of an audience and make them forget that lyrics even mattered. Muchos Backflips! did just that.
From the first note played, I knew I would have trouble categorizing their sound. The instruments played hot, fast and loudly. Try to imagine the Dave Matthews Band, if they played metal. Muchos Backflips! are simply a group of incredibly talented musicians. They worked around time measures that would even make Radiohead scratch their noggins. Individual players executed each note with technical precision, without compromising any of their live performance. The bass player even looked like he was trying to put out a fire on the stage with his feet moving so fast. Honourable mention must also go to their drummer, who played faster, funkier, and utilized more complex fills than any drummer I've witnessed since Bernard Purdy.
Next time Muchos Backflips! comes into your town, be sure to get your ticket. This instru-metal (damn, that's good) band is sure to satisfy fans of anything from Pantera, to John Coltrane, to Al Green.

NXNE @ Bovine Sex Club by: Pam Nichol - torontoindie.com
I find the name Muchos Backflips! a very interesting band name, so I was intrigued to see what they would bring to the plate. I definitely didn't expect what I was about to encounter. It only took me one song to come to the conclusion JAM BAND. They are a jam band. Whether or not that is what they entail to be, but they definitely came off as a jam band. Personally, I can't stand jam bands. Unless you bring some crazy interesting form of music that can keep me interested my mind is definitely going to wonder and that's exactly what it did. Now, the only way that Muchos Backflips! could have redeemed themselves in my eyes was to actually give us some backflips. But no, that didn't occur which I was sad to not see and was very happy once the jam session was over.

NXNE Festival Preview, Bands from all over the world. by: Lucie Davies - NOW Magazine - NowToronto.com
In a further attempt to increase its international profile, NXNE went globe-trotting again this year, plucking an array of bands from all corners of the world. From curiosity alone, check out India's Menwhopause (June 14, Kathedral, 10 pm), a quintet of players who make gentle pysched-out rock, or South African Chris Letcher (June 12, Dakota Tavern, 1 am), whose disquieting pop has stirred interest in his adopted home of London. MENWHOPAUSE. Same country of residence, entirely different approach, synth-driven Domino-signed punks These New Puritans (June 12, Reverb, 1 am) arrive fresh from a Kills support slot with a slew of glowing write-ups under their belts, while ska-punk metal benders Muchos Backflips! (June 14, Bovine Sex Club, midnight) reach their destination by way of another convenient festival city – Austin, Texas.

Muchos Backflips! @ Bovine Sex Club by: Caitlin Hotchkiss - Chartattack.com Staff
Background/Composition: A large collaboration of Texan weirdos, including an Eddie Murphy lookalike on drums, a guitarist who looked like a reject from We Are Scientists and a guy in a Bozo The Clown mask playing trumpet.
Comment: The only thing worse than a jam band is an unexpected jam band.
Oral and Visual Communication: This was probably the most random-looking collection of individuals that I've seen on stage at an NXNE showcase in years. It probably fit, then, that they were a jam band "in disguise," which did nothing but turn off the audience's attention. My compatriots busied themselves with beer and cigarettes.
Musical Analysis: Okay, so at least they were all active players, from Bozo to another trumpet player who appeared out of nowhere, to the bored-looking guitarists. But it should go without saying that fuzzy, meandering jams are not the best use of time when you've got the midnight slot at the Bovine. At least give us some of those advertised backflips.
Other Skills and Areas of interest: Seriously, buzz band or not, this fuckery should not have been granted this slot. Even I went gasping for a nicotine fix after this mess ended.

NXNE'ing (Saturday) by: HistoryJen - Blogger.com
The friend (standing behind me) was going to stay at the Bovine for the midnight set. I had no definite plans---attempt to get in to see Monotonix at Sneaks? I don't think so---so, heck, I stayed too. A group from Austin came on. They were odd, but mostly in the good way. I didn't really get it, but I certainly enjoyed myself while I pondered the costume(s) and the wacky combination of musical styles going on in front of me (to the right and a couple feet higher). Muchos Backflips! were kinda like jazzy, psychedelic metal, with a bit of hip hop thrown in on occasion. Some people really got into it; others, not so much. They certainly made an impression, though. Hope they had a good time in Toronto.

April 1, 2005. I do believe this show was booked at the last minute.. so to speak. Our friend Paul V. from Subrosa Union hooked us up with this one. Their band plays so many shows, sometimes they have to share the love. I don't remember a whole lot about it, but at the time, they would have bands until about midnight, then proceed to blare shitty, top 40 hip-hop tunes for the drunken retards.. (sorry, i don't feel like sugar-coating at the moment). This show led to many others, as they usually do for the Muchos Backflips!

Damn.....Easter Bash was almost a year ago....i need to keep up with these stinking blogs! We all got sufficient sleep the day of the bash, and i'm sure other stuff happened as well. Methinketh we ate at Great Wall that day? (all of us but Kris of course). We arrived to the spot just in time to catch Dusty Jane play their set, say hellos, get beers, throw a novelty flying disc to and fro, and get some much needed sun before the dreaded cold consumed the masses (more on that later). Other bands that performed: Soul Pajamas, One Big Groove, Low Dog, Schwag Daddy, Kent Mings, Moya, Los Sonsabitches, and Dr. Skoob......ALL local Lubbock bands....aside from Muchos Backflips! We do this show every year and, i must say, it is quite the interesting time. The event always changes due to "laws" and stuff like that. No more fires, no more looting, not even broken glass bottle fights? Times are changing. In the 2005! We were at the infamous Buffalo Springs Lake.....where "they" built a pretty nice little amphitheater, if you will. The venue was changed at the last minute....it was supposed to be at a different amphitheater.....ramble razzle raffle braffle. Muchos Backflips! The "headliner" of Easter Bash...neat stuff. We got drunk, most everyone left by the time we played from coldness (and God bless, it was late), but we did well, and it's all on videotape somewhere!
THEN!!
McFarlin's new fucking lady friend talked us into going to the open jam at "the Spoon" AKA Texas Cafe....for it was to be the last night of the jam.....We made it to the place, in a state which i cannot describe. It was madness....and we didn't go on, for the whereabouts of "the Brown" were not known at the time. So is life! In closing, it was quite the weekend....ErMac got his first taste of the Hub City, Half Bag tasted yellow curry, Winston found a lime green suit coat, "the" Brown soiled his gayabera, and the Swede.........
THE END!!!!

March 26, two thousand fy! Sparks Fly Upward, Thrift Store Cowboys, Muchos Backflips!, Sponge......
First of all, i can't really go into this without talking about the NIGHT BEFORE. We all stayed at "Mynerscher's" place of course, and the need to celebrate was afoot.....bon apadrank nickel! In other words, we got basted (yes, BASTED) that night. In fact, when the "mixers" ran out, we took on the task of consuming dry sherry mixed with Woodford Reserve. Nate and myself didn't mind the taste?, whereas everyone else seemed to disagree to the point of violence. AT ANY RATE! We love hitting the Hub City.....for our roots are buried there, never to return. The next day....we made an appearance at the studio of 88.1 KTXT at Texas Tech.....where we did an interview and played some new tracks from "A Demonstration" (they are old tracks now i suppose). We recorded that damn interview, i just need to track that tape down. We ate at Saigon Cafe (vietnamese food obviously) and everyone aside from Kris (whom was not present) quite enjoyed this little gem of a restaurant. ENOUGH of this, and on to the show. The location: Jake's Backroom......host to many fantastic bands.....and the only place to play in Lubbock that i know of anymore. Firstly, it was Sparks Fly Upward, mostly ambient instrumental type stuff in the vein of Sigar Ros/Explosions in the Sky? I hope they don't mind the comparison. I ALWAYS love bands like that, for instrumental music takes up the bulk of my writing (much of which is never played by our band). Afta! Our good pals, Thrift Store Cowboys took the stage. Fantastic as usual! Then came Muchos Backflips! We effing tore it up that night. Former fans of fastbass were hit pretty hard with the new material, for it has only gotten better since those days. We know this by the response received after we were "done" (we weren't able to finish our set due to time constraints).....PAR FOR THE COURSE. One of the members of Sponge was quoted as saying: "i don't know what that was, but it kicked ass". Side note: Timothy could not locate his cowbell that night, so he used a beer bottle. What else can i say?.....it was one of the best shows we have done. People were there to see a concert, not really knowing what to expect.....and that, my friends, is where we excel.. Sponge went on after us and did a great job, plus we found out that they are from Detroit! All the while, members of Muchos Backflips! enjoyed the complements of those who were there to see us. You must understand, it's a rare occasion for us, so we must document it somehow.....LAY OFF ME I'M STARVING!
A drunken sing-a-thon ensued at Fluitt's place. I think we tackled just about every cover song we know that night.....with mixed results..
unbeknownst to the multitudes, the infamous EASTER BASH was to follow....the next day.......and by unbeknownst i mean it was COLD OUT THERE by the time we took the stage.....more on this in the next blogggggg

AND! Our first show at The Vibe on 6th st. Sunday, March 13 2005. Timothy didn't make it to this one, but we pressed on......boy howdy. This particular Battle of the Bands, powered by Sugarlight Productions, was one of those thingies where they send you a bunches of tickets, and the band members sell them to anyone who might not be poor (they were $8 a ticket) We actually sold a few (around 30 methinks), thanks to friends and families. The rest were given to some crackheads outside of the venue, whom promptly tried to sell them for crack. At any rate, the show was fun. A few of the bands did not show up, but Solar Fuse, The Thrillbillies, Khamia, Throwing Shadows, and "Mucho Backflips" (that's how they printed our name in The Chronicle) DID make an appearance! Everyone played well, and even the Backflips brought some people up in that joint, alas....our peeps did not stay for the shouting contest....so we did not triumph. Yes, the winner was chosen by "whosoever has the loudest fans henceforth", and if you have seen one of our shows, that is definitely not us (at the moment!). We were not bitter in the least....the atmosphere was laid back and enjoyable, plus we knew what we were getting into. I think Khamia won that night (they were a NuMetal type dealy), if my brain serves me. They just brought in lotsa peeps, and good for them i say! Next time it's CURTAINS for everybody! CURTAINS!
P.S. Sorry Tim, for not keeping this blog up-to-date, even though you're the only one who reads it.
