Guignol's been away for a while, but we're thrilled to announce "Fight Dirty," our full-length collaboration with Mischief Brew. We'll be doing a short run of shows as Guignol & Mischief Brew in mid-December on the East Coast. Artwork by Kana Philip Guignol & Mischief Brew first collaborated on "A Liquor Never Brewed", a track from Mischief Brew's 2005 release Smash The Windows. Erik's Fistolo label released Guignol's sophomore EP Drink The Best Wine First the same year. Now, three years later, a long-planned full-length collaboration is coming to fruition: Guignol & Mischief Brew Fight Dirty is seven Mischief Brew songs with Guignol as backing band; six Guignol songs with Erik on guitar; a Django Reinhardt cover, and a barn-burning take on Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be They Name" (with Slavic Soul Party's Ben Holmes on trumpet). THIS IS NOT A SPLIT! It's Guignol & Mischief Brew playing together as a five-piece band. It's apotheosis anthems for the carnies, the travellers, the gypsies, jazzmen, and lowlifes; singing Turkish-flavored reveries, odes to tax evasion, dirty tricks, and mob revolution; cumbia carols, sludge-metal reels, and a funeral march at a flooded bar. (Photo by Konstantin Sergeyev) Banged out at Vibromonk Studios with Danny Shatzky (Firewater, Balkan Beat Box, Gogol Bordello), Fight Dirty will appear on CD and clear vinyl in October 13, 2009, but why not have a listen now... Been poking around the net... No Front Teeth webzine: "GUIGNOL / NANUCHKA- 'DRINK THE BEST WINE FIRST' SPLIT CD I can't explain how blow way I was with this split... I was expecting to like it because I really go for the Fistolo style and sound but this knocked me back! GUIGNOL are desribed as 'mad marionette music' and NANUCHKA are defined as 'Firewater meets...the Go-Go's' and that's it...I don't even want to expand on those perfect characterizations so instead I'll just tell you that both bands, bust especially GUIGNOL instantly struck a chord with me that ran deep and shot me back to my childhood listening to my family playing Neapoletan music with wonderful raw energy that I truly believe influenced me and guided me into punk rock...that raw urgency, energy and power. Excellent stuff here that is honestly a rare treat and exactly what I need." Artnoise"...by operating within the realm of centuries-old European traditions and then taking that music into a punk setting, they've created something that sounds at once completely familiar and completely new." Hussieskunk"Guignol plays the real deal gypsy music... The scary kind of music, the type where you know you are being cursed for looking at the circus carnie the wrong way... It's interesting, but I felt as though I was being watched as I listened to the tracks... Those gypsies, you can never tell about them, they're always watching and looking to use their gypsy powers..." either/or"...it'll confuse your friends if you put it on in the car (I know this from experience)."
