The episode of the Style Network's "Split Ends" reality show starring Shauna Raisch, owner of Twiggs of Wayzata, will air at various times Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

C.J.: 'Split Ends' stylist swap needed conditioner There was drama in the air at Twiggs on Friday as a crew for a reality show roamed the Wayzata salon and spa.

Not allowed to disclose the cable channel on which "Split Ends" will air, but here's the concept: Think "Wife Swap," only, instead of wives, salon stylists switch jobs.

Shauna Raisch, owner and expert stylist at Twiggs, was shipped out to Goodyear, Ariz., in exchange for Melissa & Co. stylist Crisanna Conrad.

Crisanna is not listed among the stylists on the Arizona salon's website because it reportedly hasn't been updated.

Word is Crisanna showed up her first day at Twiggs in a super-miniskirt, blue hair and a tongue ring. "Not one bit the Twiggs style," said Someone Who Would Know but shouldn't be quoted by name. Stylist professionalism is the buzz phrase at Twiggs, where blue hair and a tongue ring won't cut it.

Someone, however, said that this all made for the kind of on-camera tension that pleases network execs.

Shauna apparently didn't think much of the standards at Melissa & Co. Unless it winds up on the cutting room floor, Shauna can expect to be heard comparing someone at the Arizona salon to Cruella De Vil and Peg Bundy.

Just before I arrived at Twiggs on Friday, a hair-raising flare-up had occurred between Crisanna and her Wayzata colleagues. She was pulling herself together or pouting, depending on whom you asked, at the nearby Wuollet Bakery. Crisanna apparently got even with Twiggs staffers when it was her day to have total control of the salon for reality-show purposes. Word is Crisanna made stylist David wear a mesh shirt, cuffs, bunny ears and a bow tie for the day. That get-up reportedly had him feeling more like a donkey than bunny.

Boyfriend is what former TV meteorologist-turned-e-marketing strategist Janie Peterson calls her husband and Peterson Productions partner, Chris Peterson.

Chris is a great father and husband, according to Janie, and one of the best video photogs in the metro, according to unbiased sources. What I did not know about Chris, however, is that when you address him as "Boyfriend!" he strikes a pose. See my Twiggs video at www.startribune.com/video.

It's the familiar story of the small-town Midwestern girl going to Hollywood to make it big, with a few unique twists.

The girl is Shauna Raisch, no wannabe starlet, but a successful boutique salon owner with almost 20 years of experience in the beauty industry. Raisch, founder and owner of Twiggs Salonspa in Wayzata, will make her television debut May 10 as a main character in an episode of Style Network's reality show Split Ends.

"The biggest stylists do become celebrities themselves," said Raisch, who's also launched a second brand, Shauna Style, with a Web site at shaunastyle.com and a YouTube video. Television "is a way to get noticed at the national level."

Raisch originally thought of the media venture as a vehicle to bring more clients to Twiggs. The two brands, Twiggs and Shauna Style, co-exist naturally together and complement each other well, she said.

"Twiggs is client-centered while Shauna Style is more about glam," said Raisch, who acknowledged that the four-month-old Shauna Style side of her business isn't profitable yet. Raisch said Twiggs is growing at a stable rate, which allows her to spend time on Shauna Style.

"She's not going to run out to Hollywood and forget about Minnesota," said Patrick Crowe, owner of Kamper Brands Inc. in Wayzata. Crowe helped Raisch brand Shauna Style. "She's put a lot of sweat and tears into Twiggs, and she built that business here in the Twin Cities."

The Internet is an important part of Raisch's branding strategy, but television continues to be the best way for someone like her to get national exposure, said Ben Brosseau, founder of Brosseau PR. Brosseau, which represents Raisch, has offices in Minneapolis and Los Angeles.

"You can't deny the power of marketing yourself online, but television is where she's going to roll over onto the national scene," Brosseau said.

Reality television in particular is a good way for people to access the national media scene without taking the traditional routes, said Beth LaBreche, CEO of LaBreche, a Minneapolis marketing and public-relations firm. "It's easier now than it used to be. You don't have to live in a certain place. You can be the driver of your own business."

That makes it possible for Raisch to continue her Wayzata-based bricks-and-mortar business while pursuing the more intangible Shauna Style brand. And while Minnesota might not be known as an international style mecca, Raisch said she's only experienced anti-Midwesternism a couple times.
"We styled a photo shoot for a shoe company and when the owner found out we were from Minneapolis, I think she thought we'd come in with cans of Aqua Net or something," said Raisch, who grew up in Mason City, Iowa.

It's not such a big deal for a Midwesterner to break onto the national media scene, Crowe said. "How many people in Hollywood are from there anyway? Not many."

"Split Ends" is the hair world's equivalent of "Wife Swap." Two, usually opposite, stylists switch lives and salons. Then chaos and hilarity ensues.

The episode airing at 5 p.m. on Saturday on the Style Network (235 on Direct TV, cable people are on their own) will feature Shauna Raisch of Twiggs Salonspa in Wayzata as she swaps spots with an Arizona-based woman.

In the above promo, that's Shauna's nephew David McCarthy who is rumored to have a fun role in the program.

Local Stylist Gets Real
Set your TiVos: Twiggs Salon owner Shauna Raisch premiers May 10 on the Style Network's hair-raising drama, Split Ends. We'll see what happens when the Wayzata-based Raisch trades places with a spoiled hairdresser from a salon in Arizona. A third-generation master stylist, Raisch has developed quite a following in Minnesota (including a local celebrity or two), and has done hair and make-up for the runways at Fashion Week.

In my world, there's always room for more reality TV—especially when it's about the things we already obsess over, like hair, clothes, or food. Throw in a local stylist and I'm popping popcorn and sipping champagne. So of course I couldn't wait for the show to air. I had to ask Raisch for a little dirt. Here's what she said we can expect:

Remember this is TV and good TV is all about drama! The editing room does wonders for creating drama! While I will be seeing the complete version of the show for the first time when it airs on Saturday, I would expect to be portrayed as the diva who gets mad when she doesn't get what she wants. And this isn't exactly true. Well, maybe a little! I imagine that my staff will be portrayed as strict, training monsters. Also expect to see Krisanna, the stylist who I swapped with, acting like a spoiled brat who has only worked for her mom.

This won't be the last we see of Raisch. She has a couple other reality TV projects in the works, a new product launch is in her future, and she will head back to New York and L.A. for Fashion Week this fall.

Beauty: Local Salon on Reality TV This Week

If you've never caught an episode of Style network's Split Ends, here's the gist:

Two experienced hair stylists from opposite backgrounds switch places and take a position in each other's salons for one week. Drama, conflict, and good TV are sure to ensue.

To be honest, I've never seen the show, but my semi-addiction to reality TV and the fact that one of our upscale Twin Cities salons is featured will have me in front of the tube this Saturday evening.
Shauna Raisch, master stylist and owner of Wayzata's Twiggs Salonspa, recently boarded a plane from the Twin Cities to Goodyear, Arizona to work at Melissa & Co. Salon for the taping of the show. Split Ends will spotlight her experience (and that of Melissa & Co. stylist Crisanna Conrad at Twiggs) in a one-hour reality show.

In addition to opening Twiggs in 2002, Shauna, a third generation stylist, boasts a long resume including everything from styling at fashion industry events—such as New York and LA Fashion Weeks—to earning one of three U.S. spots on the World Championship Hairdressing Team. Watch Shauna work her magic Saturday at 7 p.m.
