MILITIA is profoundly grateful for the reviews that have surfaced since our appearance at Germany's Keep It True Festival.  If you haven't seen any of these, allow us to share them with you.  We'll add more as they surface.

Another U.S. metal band was up next and without a shadow of a doubt MILITIA from Austin, Texas were the band I wanted to see most of all today. Formed in January of 1984 by the rhythm section of Robert Willingham (bass) and Phil Achee (drums), the line-up was soon doubled with the addition of guitarists Tony Smith and Jesse Villegas. Vocalist Mike Soliz was the last piece of the puzzle, and by July of 1984 the band was ready to start playing live. One year later the band recorded the Regiments Of Death demo, but what has made MILITIA achieve worldwide cult status over the years was recorded and released later on in 1985 : a 3-song 12” entitled The Sybling, released in a micropress of 100 copies on Scythe Records. And bootlegged on 7” in the early 1990’s … Anyway, with a different line-up another demo (No Submission) was released in the spring of 1986, but soon after the band broke up. In early 2008 the band was asked to perform at K.I.T. 12, and the all original quintet started to rehearse again. A compilation CD (Released), including all of their 1980’s songs, was released on Forged In Fire Records and local shows were played as well. Which brings us to the present, and MILITIA’s first ever show on European soil. What made this band so special is the combination of speed and power, without ever losing any of it’s melody and technicalities. Mike’s high-pitched vocals were an extra asset, and as a whole this band was a very tight entity. Being one of the earliest Texas metal bands around, they surely served as a model for many more regional bands to arise later on in the 1980’s. All I was curious to find out was the fact if Mike would still be able to hit all of those high notes correctly. Rest assured, he indeed managed to do so. Maybe not with ease, but he did. The rest of the band was in great shape as well, despite some technical difficulties with both guitars, and they put on a very energetic set. Although the band started out 10 minutes ahead of schedule, they were forced to quit after 40 minutes already. Bummer, as that implied that we weren’t going to hear Thrash To Destroy today. But at least we were treated to the fairly unknown Onslaught, plus the entire 1985 demo and 12”, with Objective : Termination, Search For Steel, the instrumental The Sybling, and Metal Axe being the exponents. Easily the best band so far today, as far as I’m concerned. And the happy few (count me in!) that saw the band in Frankfurt the next day were treated to even more goodies…

Now, this is obscure even by Keep It True standards, as Militia released only one EP and two demo tapes, but since the whole works of the band have been featured on a compilation, fortunately some people in the audience were familiar with the music of the Texans. Fast Power Metal was the game, and the most impressive feature was singer Mike Soliz whose screams were precise and very fitting. A typical and entertaining Power Metal show made many people look for the album, but without luck as it is not one of the most common records to find.

Right after the Doom Metal of THE GATES OF SLUMBER, it's up to Tyrol's visionary Metal Monk Brother Cle to announce a legend which actually only can become a legend in a scene like ours. Founded in 1984, having out an EP with three songs in 1986, with one being an instrumental, some live appearances and another demo and then: game over! However, in our beloved scene there are those somehow "special" people, who will even remember a "no-hit-wonder" from Austin, Texas, 23 years after their split. And it's exactly those people that might bring back a band like MILITIA and getting them over to Europe for their first gig ever overseas. Unlike many other bands, who'd better have skipped such an enterprise, it should be called some kind of blessing to have this specific reunion happening right now and right here. The band interacts very well, playing their memorable Speed/Thrash from the EP and the demos with a whole lot of heartfelt dedication. The thing people wondered about the most, though, would be to hear how Mike Soliz' voice has gone through all those years. But don't worry: The high pitched screams of the Texan are surely not everybody's cup of tea, but Soliz does hit the notes that intensely and impressively, that the guy next to me just said: "I wonder when his head will explode!?" - I personally gotta say that the gig is one of the biggest surprises in the history of "Keep It True", and that MILITIA are in fact even a lot better live on stage than their cult-EP could ever show. So it's not a surprise and well deserved, that the audience's response during the gig, and the rush for their signing session are pretty impressive. I guess the guys must have been quite surprised seeing how much support they get over here, and what an impressive status they still have within the sacred halls of "Keep It True". So let's really hope, we'll see and hear some more from them in the future.

Heated up for what would become the highlight of the festival in my eyes, before having even seen the band at all, Militia from Texas. Five musicians, US metal with many speed changes, forty-five minutes of action and a whole lot of satisfaction. I decided to move into the lions den for this opportunity to take some pictures. I’ve done this before on several rare occasions. For a band like Militia, I’d gladly make this exception. Just to have some extra pictures, so I can cherish this moment for a long time afterwards. So the first three songs I watched through the camera eye. And I guess that some photographers must have seen me, because of all the slobber was dripping out of my mouth (which was wide open!). The more difficult songs were played with such power and ease, like they were so simple to play. Five hard working people, focussed on what they were doing and doing it well, doing it very well, if I may say so. After ‘Objective Termination’, ‘Regiments Of Death’ and ‘Search For Steel’, I went back into the audience. The only little setback for the band was, that guitar player Jesse Villegas did have some trouble with his gear. Tony Smith though was flying over his fret board. And in Germany there are no speed limits, so this guy was allowed to play at full speed and at full force. And you could see that he really liked to go all the way. Same goes for Mike Soliz. We wandered, if he still could do the high screams, which was his trademark. Judging by my wife’s comment, he could. She was wearing earplugs and even through these earplugs, he easily reached the pain level in her ears. What a fool I was to doubt, if Mike could still hit the high notes. He reached them with an ease that would make Rob Halford jealous. The rhythm section consisting of Robert and Phil seemed invisible, but they were as tight as you can imagine, constantly concentrating on the many speed changes. Yes, to be in the rhythm section of a band like Militia is a tough job and hard work. But these guys managed to do this incredible job. ‘Onslaught’ was on next and then came the title track of the most wanted EP in the whole universe; ‘The Sybling’. There weren’t many people, who held up their hand, when Mike asked who had an original copy of this masterpiece. But even when he asked how many people had the bootleg version, there weren’t many who responded. After ‘Salem Square’, we had already listed to the last song. On the original set list, there was a new song mentioned, but due to time limitations, the band was forced to skip this one. People, who went to Militia’s second show in Frankfurt with Aska, would get an exclusive preview of the new material. Miltia decided to play ‘Metal Axe’ as the last song of their set. Incredible and I got goosebumps all over. With music like this, I don’t need any Viagra until I die, just let the music do the talking. I really hope, that we don’t have to wait another twenty-five years to see this incredible metal band from Texas again. Both thumbs up for Militia!

Militia are the surprise of the day. They only released an EP (The Sybling in 1986) but the deliver the ultimate blend of Thrash Metal and US-Rock. When the Frontman starts to shreek, the is no higher voice. This man is a metal god!

Who would care about Militia from Texas who had only one release in the 80s which was limited to 100 copies? Luckily organisers of KIT did. When Mike Soliz opened his mouth to scream forth Objective: Termination, the whole venue seemed to stop and turn their heads to the stage. Militia is something you really have to listen to, fast, technical, even progressive hard hitting metal topped with already mentioned over the top screaming vocals of Mike Soliz. Too bad they had some problems with sound (especially Jesse Villegas' guitar) but still they could play a really scorching gig! Especially the closing duo of Salem Square and Metal Axe topped with crowd singing was nail on the head!

The Texan Metal underground heroes released the "Released" compilation CD some months ago and this was a fine chance to be invited to this year’s Keep It True fest. The main ’dish’ of discussion in the hall could not be something else than if singer Mike Soliz would smash our brains with his ultra-metallic sky high voice, plus in what level of clearness the sound should be in order to ’promote’ MILITIA’s complex songs.  Thankfully, we were welcome to some haunting set by MILITIA, with Mike building a great relationship with the crowd (way more attendants than I initially imagined, based on the historic fact of one and only release by the band back in the 80s, the hyper-rare "The Sybling" 12" EP) and delivering some terrific singing that nearly no other Metal singer can match (meaning no other). Apart from the whole "The Sybling" 3-track single, MILITIA performed songs off their two demo releases ("Metal Axe" rulez!) and it was great to see that Tony Smith still ’has it’, while I’d expect some more serious gear output sound by Jesse Villegas. Nonetheless, even people into WATCHTOWER or HADES that were not that familiar with MILITIA’s music were impressed by the band’s dynamics. As for the rest: we surely had a blast!

It's been a week since our trip to Germany, and the experiences are still ringing through our minds.  For MILITIA, this has been the ultimate highlight, a real dream come true.  We already miss being there.

There is nothing quite like arriving to the site of Keep It True and seeing the largest assembly of true metal fans we've ever seen.  It reminded us of the days of the Texas metal scene from the mid-80's.  Honestly, some of us felt out of place, since we don't look as metal as we used to!  But it didn't take long to feel right at home.  Everybody we talked to was very nice and welcoming to us.  It is still strange to be known by people so far away, especially since we're virtually unknown in our own hometown!

It was nice to relax on Friday, take in the environment and check out the other bands.  We also had the opportunity to meet several of our myspace friends in person including Tobias, who was the winning bidder on the infamous Ebay auction of Phil's Sybling EP.  His $3000 purchase is the catalyst that prompted us to reunite and ultimately landed us in Germany.  We visited with friends from France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Mexico, Finland, Slovenia, Spain, Italy and probably a few others.

On Saturday, it was our turn to hit the stage.  We were relaxed and ready.  It was such a thrill to look out at the Keep It True crowd and finally play for the very fans that had kept MILITIA alive when we thought we had been forgotten.  The time on stage went quickly and just like that, we were done.  But it was such a blast and will be a memory we will never forget!  There's no more fitting name for this event that KEEP IT TRUE.  Nowhere else is there such a hunger for true metal!

On Sunday, we headed to Frankfurt with the guys from ASKA, where we had a show at Die Halle.  We were not expecting much of a crowd, being the day after KIT.  But people started showing up and before long, there was a good crowd.  ASKA got things rolling with a powerful set of songs, including a request from the crowd for a song that wasn't planned.  But being true pros, they pulled it off flawlessly.  By the time we went on, the energy in that place was incredible.  I don't know if it's the small atmosphere of Die Halle or what, but it was the most energetic performance we've had since reforming.  And kudos to the sound man, who set up one of the best monitor mixes ever.  The sound was KILLER!  We could actually hear ourselves playing tight!!  It was at this show that the first new MILITIA song in 23 years was unveiled, entitled "And The Gods Made War".  We managed to pull it off without any noticeable issues.  There was no time limit, and eventually, we played all our songs and we were done.  Or so we thought!  We had no more songs, so if we were going to do an encore, we'd have to play one a second time.  Mike asked them what they wanted to hear, and they said "The Sybling".  That one is an instrumental, so Mike announced that he had never seen MILITIA live, so he joined the crowd while we played.

This show was a very special surprise.  It was set up by Wolfram Kuper, who is an old friend of the band.  He visited Texas back in 1986 and experienced the Texas metal scene first hand.  Wolfram contacted us a few months before our trip and offered to provide transportation from the airport to our hotel and to do some sightseeing.  He made sure we were on time wherever we went.  Plus the Die Halle show!  MILITIA would like to say a big THANK YOU to Wolfram for everything.  He went above and beyond for us, and we are very grateful and appreciative.

Germany is a beautiful country.  The countryside is breathtaking, the villages are picturesque, and the cities are so CLEAN!!!  And all the people are very friendly, even to us "English-speaking-only" types.  There is such a contrast in the way people live and relate to one another compared to here in the USA.  We found it to be quite refreshing.  Americans tend to be quite proud of being Americans, but the citizens of Germany have much to be proud of.

Thank you to everyone who we came in contact with while in Germany.  Each of you made this experience that much more memorable.  We're already looking forward to our next visit, hopefully sooner than later!

Translation:

The Texas Metal followers from the eighties will never understand, why Militia never made it bigger with their success. Only 100 happy people became lucky enough to be the owner of the legendary 3-Song-EP "The Sybling", a release which nowadays is one of the rarest collectors items in the scene. 23 (!) years later and record offers on e-bay the EP is released again. The release features also all nine songs from the two demos and other rare material- the legacy of the band. The material shows that the band from Austin was -beside Watchtower- the best Texas-Progressive-Band. They conquered new horizons and had with Mike Soliz a real outstanding frontman. For sure the band will be one of the highlights for the forthcoming KIT-Festival. Be there to get the album at the merchandise stand or be too late again.
Cult! 9,5 out of 10 points.

As you may know, only 100 original copies of Militia's "The Sybling" EP were created, making it an ultra-rare collectible.  We thought it would be cool if we could try and account for all of them.

At the time "The Sybling" was released, Militia had four members.  Each of us received our own personal copy (Phil sold his in Dec 2007).  We also know of an individual who threw away his entire record collection, a collection that included one of the original EPs.  Another copy was a casualty of being sat on and broken!

If you own one of the originals, we'd like to add you to the Official Registry.  Once verified, your EP will be assigned a number.  And if any of us happen to cross paths with you, we'll be glad to sign your copy.

In order for us to verify if you own an actual original, respond to this blog and we'll let you know where to send photos.  Let us know how you got your copy and how long you've had it.

If, for whatever reason, you would rather remain anonymous, that's no problem.  Just email us on the Myspace page - if verified, your copy will still be given a number, but we'll conceal your identity.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Militia
