"A split with two up-and-coming bands from Germany. Alpinist: Seem to have
the formula right. The music is pummeling and dark while falling in the
crust genre. Screamed vocals power forward through the speakers as the
charging guitars cut through. Amazing drumming that is far from
generic. They’re definitely an apocalyptic journey of sound. I just
wish it was a bit more bass heavy and darker. To me, it sounded a bit
bright. Finisterre: My personal favorite of the two, the band plays
more of traditional d-beat meets crust than the latter. But they also
infuse a sense of melody under the distortion. It adds to the music and
gives it more textured layers. Not a pretty sound in the slightest,
though. The music is mid-tempo but is bottom heavy and played with a
mean streak of anger. Also, the guttural vocals add to the picture of
unrest that I believe they are portraying in their songs. Another
co-released by Sengaja, Acclaim Collective, Phobiact, Subversive Ways,
Bad Pingu, Humidad y Honestidad, Contraszt!, and Threat of Today.

ATTACKFANZINE:Two previously unknown bands to me and a quick Google search tells me
this is the first vinyl appearance for Alpinist after a demo tape and
that the Finisterre tracks was meant for their first demo but ended up
as their side on this split instead. I've argued that I think records
should be preceded by at least one demo, but I've myself released the
very first recording by a band so I'll leave that one alone this time.
Alpinist
comes from Germany and they play the type of dark and heavy modern
crustcore with songs that range from slow and atmospheric to loud and
aggressive, with mainly one thing that separates them from other bands
doing the same stuff - the vocals. Where most bands doing this style
have the dark grunting this singer instead let his aggressions out
through intense screaming. It's ok stuff, but not a whole lot more than
that I'm afraid.
Finisterre hail from Germany as well and while I
guess you could pin the "modern crustcore" style to them as well they
separate themselves a little bit with having a sound that reminds me a
little bit of the late 90's mid-tempo scandicrust bands, mainly from
the Minneapolis area, with hoarse yelling and dark grunting trade-off
vocals. At their best times they sound like a cross between Warcollapse
(quite far from Minneapolis, I know) and Calloused, and at their worst
times they're somewhat predictable. There's room for growth, even
though it's a quite solid debut effort.

COLLECTIVE ZINE:"The Alpinist side of this split is highly enjoyable. It's Saturday
morning and I've got a pretty crap day lined up, but at least I spent a
bit of time listening to Alpinist. Crust hardcore / d-beat with what I
think contains some screamo influences, the band blaze their way
through four tracks of quite varied length (shortest song is two
minutes, longest is almost nine). From the instrumental side it's
fairly typical crust as far as I can see but done really well. There
are lots of really harsh raging parts and there are times when things
lighten up and get a bit more melodic. What I mean by screamo
influenced is that the vocals are less deep and gruff that you usually
get - they are more high pitched and shrieking. That's the shit that
gets me going, overall its a great side and the band are touring the UK
in April with Sand Creek Massacre, so go see them!
Finisterre play a similar style to Alpinist but more typical crust in
vocals. It's good, crust is not my favorite genre so I'm not sure I can
analyse it much further. Lots of bands play like this and they
generally seem decent but all end up sounding the same. If you like the
genre then definitely check them out! Both bands are from Germany by
the way, and this is a joint release between eight labels.

OX_FANZINE:"Da hat sich aber jemand extrem viel Mühe gegeben mit
der optischen Gestaltung dieser Split-Lp der beiden jungen deutschen
Crust-Bands Alpinist und Finisterre. Das Coverartwork ist düster und
eher schlicht gehalten; der eigentliche Clou ist hier das Beiheft. Im
A5-Farbbooklet werden die Lyrics mit erklärenden Worten und
(foto)grafischen Arbeiten kombiniert optisch überaus delikat angeboten.
Liebe Mitmenschen, da steckt viel Herzblut drin! ALPINIST aus Münster
überraschen mit einem für dieses Genre relativ großen Dynamikumfang. Da
wird nicht nur von Anfang bis Ende der Stücke durchgeknüppelt, es
bleibt auch genügend Raum für ruhigere, postapokalyptisch anmutende
Klänge, welche atmosphärisch prima mit den Heavy-Parts kontrastieren
und so die verzweifelte, morbide, unglaublich düstere Grundstimmung der
Tracks noch unterstützen. Erinnert in dieser Hinsicht schon etwas an
Fall of Efrafa, auch wenn die Jungs aus Münster insgesamt deutlich
kompaktere, direktereStücke als die Briten darbieten. Wesentlich
geradliniger gestalten die die Kölner Split-Partner FINISTERRE ihre
Songs. Mit viel Wut, genretypischen Akkordverschiebungen und relativ
strikt durchgezogenem D-Beat-Gekloppe generieren sie relativ simplen,
in diesem Kontext aber durchaus funktionierenden Düster-HC. Die via
Songtexte kommunizierten Aspekte sind bei beiden Bands lyrisch zwar
durchaus interresant, bieten inhaltlich im Endeffekt aber wenig
Überraschendes. Sowohl ALPINIST als auch FINISTERRE erfüllen mit Klang
und Wort auf hohem Niveau die Hörerwartungen eingeweiter Kreise, haben
sich also für die risikoarme Variante "Geschmacksbefriedigung

ROMP:"Das Artwork ist so düster wie die Mucke, die hier die zwei relativ neuen Bands präsentieren. Finisterre spielen düster D-Beat-Cruste mit Frau Mann Gesang. Wobei das eine nur noch ein dumpfes Grolen ist. Die sechs Songs kommen gut abwechslungsreich daher, ja gar mit ner Melodie. Ja teilweise kommen gar Erinnerungen an die guten alten Jeniger hoch. Wirklich mal wieder eine erfrischende Band, die mitreisst. texte gegen Deutschquote, Patriotismus, Depression, Überwachung...Mehr zu Finisterre findet ihr in diesem Heft.
Alpinist fangen da etwas schleppender an, aber kein bisschen weniger düster. Die Songs wechseln zwischen Emo Parts und ab geh Sachen. Wenn es dann aber ab geht, dann grad in nem guten Tempo. Tja leider will mir der Gesang einfach nich gefallen, ein wildes gekrächze. Texte zu Egoismus, Ideal ignorieren, Materialismus, und ein an Brechts "Nachtlager" angelehnter Text. Enthält ein ähnlich düsteres Booklet mit den Texten der beiden Bands."
PLASTIC BOMB:"Beide Bands spielen düsteren, bedrohlichen, aggressiven Crust. ALPINIST mit ihrem
extrem fiesen Gesang erinnern etwas an MADAME GERMEN, FALL OF EFRAFA
und HIS HERO IS GONE. Teilweise in mittlerem Tempo, teilweise ein rüdes
Geknüppel. Gefällt mir wesentlich besser als live. Währenddessen
überzeugen FINISTERE mit zweistimmigem (weibl./männl.) Gesang. Sie
ziehen in gedrosseltem Tempo eine dunkle Spur nach sich. Auch hier bin
ich mehr von den Studioaufnahmen angetan als vom Konzert. Das ebenso
schlichte wie ansprechende Artwork passt zur Vollendung der ewigen
Düsternis. Beide Bands singen übrigens aus Deutsch. Was man so "singen"
nennt, haha... (Micha)"
TRUST ZINE:
"Oh Gott, selten hab ich mich so ersehnt, dass Plattenseiten endlich vorbei sind, denn ich gebe mir
alles in der Regel bis zum Schluss. Beide Bands (Münster / Köln) sind
nicht schlecht, aber sterbenslangweilig. Alpinist gewinnen die
Split-Platte, da sie es schaffen aus dem ganzen musikalischen
Crust-Morast hie und da sich mit ein paar netten Einsprengselungen aus
dem langgezogenen Sumpf schleppender Töne zu befreien. Bei Finisterre
mit düsterem D-Beat bin ich beim ersten Hören auf dem Sofa
eingeschlafen und musste zurück auf Los. Für Freunde, die ihren Spaß
aus der Kunst des langsamen Mumpf ziehen mit Sicherheit ein kleiner
Tipp. Mich macht sowas eher nervös. Schönes Booklet dabei. (joachim)

Jeune groupe originaire de Münster, Alpinistenregistre
sa première démo, dix titres en septembre/octobre 2007. Déjàtrès mature
musicalement, la formation sort un split ep en juin 2008 encompagnie de
Finisterre,autre
groupe de crust allemand, via les labels Sengaja Records,Contrazt!
Records, Bad Pingue, Threat Of Today, Humilidad Y Honestidad,Phobiac
Records et Subversive Ways. Il s'ensuit une tournée européennecomptant
plus de soixante concerts durant l'été. Le quatuor
travailleactuellement sur son premier album.
Une ville en
ruine, esquissée à grands coups de crayons tourmentés,sur fond grisâtre
; esthétisme et désolation, tristesse et colère. Alpinist et Finisterre, deux groupes à la vision du monde similaire, réunis pour un split emo crust à deux visages. Alpinist ou la quête d'un ailleurs.
Première variation sur un crust puissant, fin et poétique, taillé dans les veines de Fall Of Efrafa (période Elil) et du crust espagnol de La Corogne (Ekkaia, Madame Germen)aux
reminiscences des écorchures screamo. Musique aux structurescomplexes,
recherchées et maîtrisées, ponctuée de montées et de breaksà faire
frémir, où l'émotion se déploie en diverses nuances. Un chant àtrois
voix déchirées s'y agrège, mais seul reproche à émettre, hormisune
production en dedans, la voix principale reste un peu tropnasillarde,
même s'il faut avouer que la qualité de l'ensemble n'enpâtit pas
réellement.
Délicats tourbillons mélodiques, pénétrés dechagrins et
de mélancolie ; maëlstroms furieux emplis de courroux,d'amertume et de
souffrance ; chevauchées épiques menant aux rivages dupost-core
('Weisse Peder') et toujours plus loin, telle une fuite enavant,
jusqu'à la perception confuse de relents indus ('Nachtlager').Prenant,
poignant, parfois proche de l'onirisme, noyé de douleur et depeine,
riche, dense et profond, pressentiment d'un ailleurs, Alpinist semble chercher désespéremment à atteindre des sommets entrevus en songes pour s'extirper des marécages nauséeux de ce monde.
Alpinist ou l'improbable rêve. Finisterre ou le souffle de la fin du monde.
Deuxième temps : un crust frontal, brut, solide, d'une efficacité totale, ancré dans les consonnances allemandes (Lies Feed The Machine, Cave Canem), enveloppé en permanence de mélodies enlevées, dans la droite lignée de Fall Of Efrafa (période Owsla), Schifosi ou Remains Of The Day.Les
titres courts, bien équilibrés, bénéficiant d'une très bonneproduction,
comportent des touches originales tel un passage stoner sur'Gruner Und
Jahr' ou par exemple l'utilisation de spoken words('Asphalt', 'Jijl').
Le chant est assuré par un excellent duomasculin/féminin aux voix
arrachées et expressives dont les timbresdifférents ainsi que leurs
lignes de chant sont d'une réelleefficience. Alternance de rythmes
rapides aux riffs explosifs,foudroyants, fulgurants et de mid-tempos
lancinants, baignés de malaise('Depression') : sous des aspects
revendicatifs s'insinue uneatmosphère sombre et ténébreuse où l'espoir
n'a plus lieu d'être.Colère et fureur mêlées de ressentiment et de
dépit : rage etimpuissance, émergeance de mélancolie et de regrets. La
musique de Finisterre serévèle
inquiétante et terrible car sans horizons. L'oeuvre se clôturesur un
break mid-tempo ('Jijl'), étayé de spoken words, où les motsprononcés
par Till, scandant pour lors d'une voix claire, frappent ettombent
telle une sentence irrémédiable et mortelle.
Finisterre ou le cauchemar tangible. Alpinist et Finisterre nousoffrent
un split d'une qualité remarquable et ces deux jeunes groupes,affichant
une maturité musicale assez sidérante, semblent posséder unelarge marge
de progression. Jouant déjà quasiment dans la cour desgrands, ces deux
formations feront sans doute les beaux jours du crustallemand.
