As many of you know, my all-time favorite American composer was Scott Joplin, the king of ragtime. What some of you may not know is that Joplin wrote his first opera in 1901 (unfortunately lost), called "A Guest of Honor". The subject of the opera was one of the most controversial events of the day: President Theodore Roosevelt had actually invited Booker T. Washington, civil rights leader and educator, and a black man, to a White House dinner in his honor! In the eyes of many, this was a scandal, and Roosevelt sustained as much criticism for this as for perhaps any other political move he made while in office.

How pleasant to think what African-American composer Scott Joplin might have felt had he been witness to the events in Washington today. And how gratifying to know that such change has taken place, as Joplin always believed it would.

[N.B. By popular demand, I'm re-posting this as a Blog, since people are telling me that they love it, but the Bulletin scrolled off too quickly...  So here ya go!]

This is a wonderful short article, with photos, about how Women won the right to vote. Their courage in the face of harrowing abuse is a true story and one which should never be forgotten. Worse, it is a story some people have never even heard.

(Please note that the movie referred to -- also wonderful -- is actually not new, but four years old.)

Category: Dreams and the Supernatural

Ever since posting something about this on my status line, I've had so many people writing me to ask about it, that I thought I might as well post it as a blog.  And you all know I don't blog all that much...  ;)

I was spending the night with Sionna out at the Elysium farm last Saturday night. We had noticed the full moon rise, large and orange, and so we walked from the farm house up to the Elysium circle (a very large, fenced, sacred area, with trees all around the perimeter) to watch it. We stayed cuddled in the swing watching the moon until it turned white and rose above the trees. I had taken a heavier shirt in case it got cool, but didn't use it.

Finally, we decided to head back to the farm house, and were about halfway back when I realized I had left my shirt up at the circle. Sionna waited for me down by the lower gate while I went back up to get it.

I was watching the moon the whole time I walked up there, got to the swing, picked up my shirt, turned to head back, when a "saw" it. It was like the air had become denser, thicker, and formed a human shape. About 5' tall, standing just at the edge of the fire pit, which is in the center of the circle. I couldn't tell if it was male or female. I got a very "androgynous" feel from it, although I'm inclined to think female... though that may just be my projection.

The other odd thing was that, after a lifetime devoted to reading about the "Good People", I thought that, if I ever encountered one, there would be a sense of "kindred spirit" or camaraderie. Nothing could have been farther from the truth!!! I've never felt so much like I was in the presence of something totally alien. Not malevolent, just other-worldly. It was like all my hair was standing on end!

I left that place quickly, feeling like I was intereupting something. (I got the sense that it was in the middle of some ritual or other.) The other thing I kept wandering all night was whether it had been waiting for Sionna and me to leave before it started doing its thing, and I only "saw" it because I'd forgotten my shirt and had to go back for it.

The alien feeling of it kinda haunted me all night, and even now, I can't quite get the image out of my head. I certainly wish Sionna or her dog had gone back to the circle with me. It would have been interesting to see if they had seen it, too.

I can certainly better understand that theory I've heard that, depending on one's underlying personal mythos, one might interpret it as one of the "Fair Folk", or as "an alien". It would sustain either interpretation, in my book. Just completely not-of-this-world, and you-shouldn't-get-too-close. Brrrr!!!

Some of you who have seen me at various Pagan festivals know that I am seldom there without my guitar, and if you've heard me play and sing, you've probably heard me do a John Stewart song or two.

So it was with great sadness that I learned of his passing yesterday:
http://www.undercoverhd.com/news/Story.aspx?id=3900

Some of you "old school" types may remember his contributions to the Kingston Trio. Some may remember that he wrote "Daydream Believer" (recorded by the Monkees, and later covered by Anne Murray). Some may remember his only solo hit, "Gold", from 1979 (with backing vocals by his good friends Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks). And those who pay attention to song writing credits may have noticed that his songs were sung by everyone from Joan Baez to Roseanne Cash to Mary Chapin Carpenter.

By I will remember him always as a lyricist of incredible beauty and eloquence. He was especially great at illustrating human emotions with scenes from nature (rather like the Welsh bards of old). Who but John Stewart could write "he was as high as a snake in an eagle's beak"?

As a tribute, I offer lyrics to one of his best songs. Unbelievably, this song was cut out of the initial release of his "Fire In The Wind" LP, and was only restored to it when the album was released with "bonus" tracks. Read this and ask yourself who hasn't lived through this! I already miss him so badly.

SOME KIND OF LOVE
by John Stewart

Some kind of love is like gold
That is the hardest to hold
For it catches the eye of each thief passing by
Some kind of love is like gold

Some kind of love comes too soon
That kind of love heals your wounds
When your wounds are all healed and you're back on your wheels
You say, That kind of love came too soon

Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love
Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love

Some kind of love starts as friends
And that kind of love never ends
It comes on as slow as a flower in snow
Some kind of love starts as friends

Some kind of love tears your heart
You know it was wrong from the start
Try to explain a moth to a flame
Some kind of love tears your heart

Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love
Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love

Some kind of love never dies
That is the hardest to find
Through laughter and rage it mellows with age
Some kind of love never dies

Some kind of love is like gold
That is the hardest to hold
For it catches the eye of each thief passing by
Some kind of love is like gold

Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love
Some kind of love, some kind of love
Everyone's looking for some kind of love
