Alzheimer's Association, WV Chapter E-update September 2009
(http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=gtKVJfPTLjIXLkK&s=7dJKJTMsEhIHLRPyGqE&m=igIKLUMEIfLUG)

Hello!

We are pleased to bring you the September edition of our e-update with information on World Alzheimer's Day and our upcoming Education Conference. Visit our Community Education page (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=ehKRI9OHLeIQKaJ&s=7dJKJTMsEhIHLRPyGqE&m=igIKLUMEIfLUG) for more information on local community workshops and Lunch & Learns.

Go Purple for World Alzheimer's Day!
September 21st, 2009 is a day for all 26 million people living with Alzheimer's disease and their families, friends and caregivers to unite as one VOICE in an effort raise awareness about Alzheimer's.

Just as the number of individuals with Alzheimer's increases each year, so must our community support, education and research. Use World Alzheimer's Day as a way to engage coworkers, friends, congressional representatives or church leaders about the perils of the disease and how they can MOVE to end Alzheimer's.

Encourage your workplace to GO PURPLE (and casual) on World Alzheimer's Day! Have everyone wear an article of purple clothing, decorate your lunchroom or cafeteria in purple or serve a brain healthy lunch. Order Casual for a Cause stickers (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=gtKVJfPULjIWLkK&s=7dJKJTMsEhIHLRPyGqE&m=igIKLUMEIfLUG) and sell them for $5 to your co-workers and have a "Casual for the Cause" World Alzheimer's Day.

HONK to STOP Alzheimer's will be a chapter-wide event on the morning and evening of World Alzheimer's Day! You can find us on the busy streets waving our HONK to STOP Alzheimer's signs from 7:30 am to 8:30 am AND 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm! If you would like to volunteer, please contact our office at 1.800.491.2717

Visit the WV Chapter's World Alzheimer's Day page (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=gtJVLfPVIiISKiJ&s=7dJKJTMsEhIHLRPyGqE&m=igIKLUMEIfLUG) to see a complete listing of events, workshops and ideas to make the 2009 World Alzheimer's Day a memorable one!

Health Care Reform
The health care reform debate continues to dominate the national agenda in Washington, DC. Congress has set its goal to have a health care bill completed by the end of the summer, but the timeline is already slipping.

However, our message to Congress remains clear: Congress must pass health care reform that includes long-term care services and supports this year.

What Can I Do Now?

We must keep the pressure on Congress.

Join other Alzheimer's advocates by participating in local activities with your members of Congress to press our health care reform agenda. Advocates are needed to visit district offices and attend public meetings. Contact your chapter (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=8dJGLPMjFdJLIXK&s=8eJMIWPwFiKJKUOCIrH&m=hjIOL4OHKdI3H) to learn more.

Issue Update

Here is an update on commitments members of Congress have made to our issues:

230, including West Virginia Representative Nick Rahall and Ohio Representative Charlie Wilson, indicate support to end the two-year waiting period for Medicare*;

201, including West Virginia Representative Shelley Moore Capito, indicate support for a $250 million increase in Alzheimer research funding; and

86 indicate support the creation of an Alzheimer's Solutions Project Office.

67 members indicate support for all 3 issues!

*108 members of Congress have co-sponsored the Ending the Medicare Disability Waiting Period Act of 2009 (S.700/H.R.1708). View the list (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=etITIbPLJeKUIiI&s=8eJMIWPwFiKJKUOCIrH&m=hjIOL4OHKdI3H).

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Congressmen Rahall and Wilson for co-sponsoring the Ending the Medicare Disability Waiting Period Act of 2009, and to Congresswoman Capito for writing a letter to the House Appropriations Committee to request an additional $250 million in National Institute of Health funding for Alzheimer's research.

Advocate in Action:
Teresa Lambert, North Central Texas Chapter

Teresa Lambert (pictured at right) was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2007 and serves as a passionate voice in advocacy.

Teresa is one of nearly half a million people under the age of 65 who have Alzheimer's disease.

Teresa, pictured with Rep. Gene
Green (TX-29) at the 2009 Alzheimer's Association Public Policy Forum (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=hwKZJkMXIhJ1JsL&s=8eJMIWPwFiKJKUOCIrH&m=hjIOL4OHKdI3H).
She strongly believes the two-year wait for Medicare should be eliminated.

In November, Teresa was featured as an Advocate in Action for sharing her experiences at a press conference on Capitol Hill. Her story was recently featured
on National Public Radio's (NPR) All Things Considered. Read or listen (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=afILKZNvGaIOL8K&s=8eJMIWPwFiKJKUOCIrH&m=hjIOL4OHKdI3H) to Teresa's profile now.

World Alzheimer's Day

Mark your calendar! September 21, 2009 is World Alzheimer's Day - a day for everyone involved with or affected by Alzheimer's disease to come together and promote awareness worldwide.

More than 26 million people suffer from Alzheimer's across the globe, and that number is expected to quadruple over the new few decades. This means more families and communities will be affected like never before with increased financial, physical and mental stress. The more awareness we can raise throughout our communities and in the government, the better chance we have at advancing treatment, delaying onset, and ultimately curing and preventing the disease.

Go Purple on September 21 to celebrate World Alzheimer's Day. This is a great opportunity to raise funds for Memory Walk. Host a dinner party, decorate your work cafeteria or insert brain facts in your company newsletter. Visit our website (http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=diIOJ4OGKaJMKcL&s=7dJKITOsFhLHKRPyGqG&m=rlK7KkN0IoI9F) for more information.

Thank You

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito for her committment to fighting Alzheimer's disease by requesting an additional $250 million in funding for research and prevention. We are very honored to have Congresswoman Capito on our side in this important fight.

Action Alert!

what:
Tell Senator Robert Byrd to increase Alzheimer research funding.
Send your email now (http://www.alz.kintera.org/senate).

when:
By Wednesday June 17, 2009

Dear Alzheimer Advocate:

Senator Byrd is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee who makes decisions on the amount research funding will receive.

Alzheimer research funding has declined over the last 6 years.

As a result: good science has gone unfunded, young scientists (and their new ideas) have been forced into other fields and life-saving treatments have been delayed or lost forever.

Take Action:

Email Senator Byrd. Tell him to increase Alzheimer research!

Use our Write Congress tool (http://www.alz.kintera.org/senate) to send your message.

Remember to personalize the email by adding a few words about how Alzheimer's impacts your life.

Need a direct link to this action? http://www.alz.kintera.org/senate

Federal Update - May 2009

Issue Update

As a result of our efforts at the Public Policy Forum in March and our April action to increase support for the Ending the Medicare Disability Waiting Period Act of 2009 (S.700 / H.R.1708), 35 additional members of Congress have become co-sponsors, including WV Congressman Nick Rahall and OH Congressman Charlie Wilson! We now have 73 and counting. View the list of members who have already co-sponsored the bill at: http://alz.kintera.org/endthewaitcosponsors.

To date, Members of Congress have made the following commitments to our issues:

* 194 indicated support to end the two-year waiting period for Medicare;

* 204 indicated support for a $250 million increase in Alzheimer research funding; and

* 68 indicated support the creation of an Alzheimer’s Solutions Project Office.

* 65 members indicated support for all 3 issues!

What Can I Do Now?

Join your fellow advocates May 25-29 as we visit US House members in their District offices. The focus of this month’s visits is increasing federal Alzheimer research funding by $250 million.

Contact your chapter to join or start a visit team. (http://www.alz.org/wv/in_my_community_contact.asp)

Emerging Issue: Health Care Reform

The talk in Washington, DC is all about health care reform. Our position is that health care reform cannot be passed without improvements to care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Association is heavily involved in efforts on Capitol Hill and in national coalitions, pushing for Alzheimer-specific changes. Most recently, we submitted comments to the healthcare reform proposal outlined by the Senate Finance Committee and will continue to stay active in this debate. (http://finance.senate.gov/press/Bpress/2009press/prb042809.pdf)

We are focusing on making sure that these reforms include: care coordination services for people with Alzheimer’s disease as part of Medicare; ending the Medicare 2-year wait; and improving long term services and supports. (Care coordination is a person-centered approach that brings together medical and community care and includes: a personal needs and goals assessment; a care plan; and care managed by a trained care coordinator or interdisciplinary team.)

We will continue to update you on our health care reform efforts.
