check out this review of my new album in the Noise, Boston. SARAH BLACKER Rumble Bee Records The Only Way Out Is Through 11-song CD I like Sarah’s disc; she certainly takes you on a ride. I admit the first track with the kinda goofy mandolin made me think of some ephemeral country folk pop riff-raff. Her voice, though is fabulous (please tell me there’s no pitch correction here Sarah, PLEASE). I started hearing a Natalie Merchant-type timbre… and yes, though a down-in-the-mud-rocker resides in my soul, I really enjoy these lighter shades. Another complimentary aside to Sarah’s voice, I might mention Dolores O’Riordan. I like the fact that Sarah is a music therapist, it’s extremely cool. Finally the world is waking up and realizing that music is not just a flagrant plastic commercial throwaway. I’m sure study of music as therapy certainly alludes to the elusive quality of quality, to tongue tie a phrase for you. That nonsense being said, Sarah has produced a quality work with a great understanding of what it takes to deliver a musical message. (Mike Loce)

check out this article posted about S.B. for her Dogfish Grille show next Wed., June 10th in the Portland, ME Press Herald as a feature by Aimsel Ponti, called 'Night is Young.'
"You've taken the day off from work and driven for about an hour, hugging the coastline with the windows open. Then you find the sunniest spot and find you're the only person on the beach. The wind is warm, the gulls dart and dance above and beside you. You close your eyes and smile for a good long time.
Such an enchanting experience is what I liken to listening to Sarah Blacker's debut album, "The Only Way Out is Through." Blacker, from Boston, will be playing at the Dogfish Bar & Grille on Wednesday night.
She's a classically trained vocalist who learned piano by ear. She also picked up the guitar late in her teens, and after ditching lessons forged ahead and crafted her own chords and rhythms.
The opening track on her CD, "The Smell of Caramel," features mandolin and accordion. "Days like these the only things that feel right is eating dark chocolate and drinking red wine in the night," sings Blacker with her free and easy voice. "I Should Speak" tells of a person who can't find the voice to describe how she's feeling. Acoustic guitar, drums and bass carry the song along, and it's one of my favorites.
There's a tormented edge to "Countin' Pennies" in both the words and music. "Lately I feel just like dying, so empty my mind into a cup and hold it to your lips until you drink me darling down." I have inked into my day planner to make an appearance on Free Street next week because I have a pretty good idea that Sarah Blacker live will be even better than what I've been listening to for the past couple of weeks.

Hey guys,
just thought I'd share a few highlights from my adventures as of late :)
Saturday, May 23rd: After detouring off the highway at almost every exit from MA to CT, and yard-sale-ing... (I got some antique tambourines, a ViewMaster, some California Raisins, Smurfs, & ET PVC Figures, for gifts, Beasley even got a stuffed animal)
@the Blacksheep Ranch in Clinton, CT, my dog Beasley took full liberty of the wide open field and generous snacking/sharing kids...and basically owned the place within just a short amount of time. Since he goes where I go, as soon as I was on stage, there he was, right by my side, laying on my cords and foot tuner...
Check out my *pictures* section to see some shots of this dream realized for me- to have Beasley on stage while I performed! ... he's been coming to shows more than more...after-all he IS my sidekick...(and best friend) I'm determined to keep taking him on tour!
The rain held off for the show, and Andrew and Suzane Wallach & friends were AMAZINGLY hospitable, took tons of pictures, and fed all of us lots of taste-y snacks. I look forward to returning to this beautiful piece of earth and all that it holds...
Wednesday, May 28th: @the Barley Pub in Dover, NH, Beasley also came along again, and was allowed inside! (which was unbelievable)... and he again owned the bar in seconds. He met a Blue Heeler, and they appropriately sniffed each other's you-know-whats...
The crowd was wonderful and I even got to try out a new song I'd written 2 days before, called, 'Nigh, Nigh.' (Not Neigh, Neigh)
I also re-introduced an older tune that I hadn't played in a while called, 'Revelry of Heart (Rebel)' which I sing & play on my djembe. Come to my next show near you, and I promise to play both for you:)
This was a truly magical night, and it was a WEDNESDAY!
Thursday, May 29th: I hadn't slept very much the night prior, but down to NYC I went, losing on a couple of scratch tickets on the way...
I ate sushi and geeked out at Slurp!, made friends with a couple kind souls in Guitar Man, and then carried my gear in the rain to the the Rockwood Music Hall. It was packed to the gills and I sat with all my gear in about 1' of space before making it up to the stage! New York City ... the big city. I have so much to say you, NYC, and I'm writing it all into a song, so that's all I'll say for now. And, that I met some amazing people, and slept just 2 hours that night...
Saturday, May 30th: Jeanie Johnston' Pub
THINGS I LEARNED/Highlights: ~Petrina Foley is a force of nature! check her out:
~Jimmy the booking guy/bartender is the man, and knows how to talk some serious jive! ~Buffalo Honey Chicken just might be a gift from heaven (thanks Jimmy!) ~NO DOGS ALLOWED! ~Schmack is one of my favorite people ever ~Jimmy tried to get Petrina, her kick-ass band, and I to make a human pyramid (we opted out...) but we did get some great pictures. I'll post 'em as soon as I have a few more minutes...
I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who came out to these shows, and please, keep coming, and enjoy the new tunes! I'll have my new album: 'The Only Way Out is Through,' with me for sale starting June 4th in VT!
ok guys, I'm all geeked out. Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out my new website!
much love sb :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ .....why, here's one now!:
Q&A for Dedham MusicFest / Dedham Times interviewer: Michelle Apuzzio
How do you describe your music to someone who has never heard you play? A unique blend of folk and jazz, with hints of Joni Mitchell and Ella Fitzgerald, catchy songs with intelligent lyrics. Powerful emotions span quiet intimacy to fun and playful, a strong rhythmic guitar backdrop supports a voice much bigger than its hostess- or so I've been told ;)
Who are your influences? Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Feist, Yes, to name a few.
How did you start playing live music? With a CD in hand, I entered the All Asia Café in Cambridge, MA before they had even begun to have live music. I played there weekly to anywhere from 5-50 people. I didn’t start very smoothly, and often had panic-attacks mid-set. I was pretty self-deprecating on stage, and even toyed with an FX pedal for my vocals, which some college student told me, he didn’t much like. Boston was like my practice space, and I might have been on stage earlier than I ought to have been…but I grew, and learned and now stage feels like home.
Have you ever gotten any strange song requests? Well when I play the mandolin, I think people associate its uniqueness with Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ so sometimes they ask for that song. And of course, always, ‘Freebird.’
Do you have a local connection to Dedham? I’m the newest member of Voicewize in Dedham Center where I’ll be doing Music Therapy 1/night/week under the moniker, ‘Rumble Bee Music Therapy.’
What have you been working on lately (i.e. new CD, where do you play most of your gigs?) I am on the verge of releasing my debut full-length album, ‘The Only Way Out is Through,’ and have also been playing from VT down to NY, with plans to head out across the country later this summer. I’m really excited to share the new album with the world, as for me; its conception to completion has been a journey of fulfilling my biggest dream to date!!!
What are you most looking forward to at MusicFest? Hearing the other bands, hopefully having beautiful weather, and maybe meeting some really interesting people and finding out how I know their aunt’s father’s second cousin, or am related to them in some other eerie degree of separation.
Do you have a website or a myspace page where people can hear your music? http://www.myspace.com/sarahblacker and my website is currently under construction, but it’s located at http://www.sarahblacker.com
hey everyone :)
I just wanted to let you know that starting today/tomorrow, I will be posting up new tracks from my brand-new album, 'The Only Way Out is Through.' Stop by often to listen, and for details on how to get your very own copy through i tunes, cd baby, and also nimbit.com
Stay tuned!!!
Here is what one listener/one of the album's featured musicians on, 'Talk to Me,' (Chuck Fisher, acoustic guitar) had to say about the album so far:
"Guitar on I Should Speak is sublime ... Fripp/Eno/Ambient meets Shawn Colvin/John Levanthal Nouveau/Early Americana ... Electric on Over This Hill is super sweet mix o' Glen Frey/Steely Dan(Skunk-Denny-Larry C.) taste .... whatta tone! Neo-Arabian spirit children that erupt from the haunted attic in bridge of Little Light an inspired flash of flavor .... Story Song's sparse ivories season and punctuate ... never merely decorate .... Bad and Pennies slake long-simmering thirst for the Hammond B3 burst .... (Or should I have said that first?)
Right .... Off you go!!"
***listen here in the meantime for un-mastered versions of, 'I Should Speak,' and here on my myspace page for, 'the Smell of Caramel,' enjoy!!!
WHAT WILL YOU THINK?!?!? STAY TUNED to FIND OUT :)
Hey everyone, I've spent this past weekend at Mom & Dad's house- a weekend to relect, relax, and explore through things past and present.
I discovered that though I knew how very many journals I possessed, I think I hadn't realized just how many poems I'd written in my life.
Not necessarily knowing what to do with them all, I've begun a *POETRY BLOG* RUMBLE BEE POESIE (hosted by Blogspot)
where I'll be posting them up for you to read, critique, ignore, despise, covet, or get lost in. This way, if anything happens to the journals, the poetry may be eternalized on the web- at least until the Apocalypse!
see u soon :)
so anywaize.... Patrick Swayze? What the heck.
nah, not going there...
but the show at the Radio Bean was a blast. During the set before mine- there were a bunch of tiny children running around playing a terribly dangerous game I like to call, 'Open the big heavy old wooden door, and see how many kids can run through before it shuts on one of them.' Luckily only one tiny girl had her head closed between the doors just twice...eek!!! There was also a Spanish Club meeting- I guess you never know what you're going to find pretty much anytime, anywhere!
During my set, the audience was so silent and respectful, I thought I could drop a pin and someone might jump! Thank you everyone who was there! Thank you for your kindness :)
Following the selling of some CDs, mailing list passing, and meeting of new fans and friends- I drank a $2 shake made of a stout beer, espresso and maple syrup. Halfway through, I thought this is my time-window, I ought to hit the road since I no longer have place to stay. Having been partially yet kindly offered a random sofa in an apartment where the inhabitants wouldn't be home until past 2 am, I decided my own bed 3.5 hours away sounded most appealing. So the bartender concocted a triple espresso handed it to me and out to door Clinton Curtis- amazing singer/songwriter from NYC who opened and I, went!
