** (weewerk) Announces New Album Releases  for February 3rd, 2009 **

(weewerk)030   JON-RAE FLETCHER  "Oh, Maria"
"OH, MARIA" follows the story of a soul torn apart by betrayal and longing, a man coming to terms with his role in the playing out of causal circumstance and his eventual redemption in the acceptance of time and change.

"OH, MARIA" contains ten stripped down, confessional songs that are both compelling and euphoric, punctuated by heartache and the strength needed to overcome loss in these hard times. With the help of old friends, Colin Stewart (Hive Studio), Darcy Hancock (Ladyhawk), as well as new friends Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers, Immaculate Machine), Crystal Denham and Denver Rawson, Jon-Rae set about capturing a unique recording of a unique concept. To record these songs, Jon-Rae wanted the feeling of a specific time and place to be present in each of the songs. To achieve this, the album was rehearsed one day and recorded in a turn-of-the-century living room the next, favouring first takes and no overdubs.

(weewerk)031  UNITED STEEL WORKERS OF MONTREAL
"Three On The Tree"

THREE ON THE TREE sees the band branching out from their earthy, acoustic-country-punk roots to experiment with gospel (Jesus We Sweat), historical ballads (Mary Gallagher), Spanish horn arrangements (Glen Jones) and thundering murder ballads (Three Hard Knocks). Lead singer Gern f., guitarist Shawn 'Gus' Beauchamp and electric guitar master Matthew Watson each pour a diverse helping of tunes into the mélange. Rockabilly bassist Eddy Blake and banjo/mandolin player Chris Reid's combined upbeat, energetic stylings give the album an unmistakable pop and swing.
Huge in heart, narrative scope and emotion, THREE ON THE TREE swoops down over the industrial grimness of Shot Tower sashaying through the street-level social turbulence of What a Riot and peers into a delicate room where lead singer Felicity Hamer's velvety vocals balance the melody of Little Girl like a frail tea-cup on her saucer. All of the most loved conventions of The USWM's previous work are represented, from the stirring rallying cries of Under Dogs and The Line to light hearted foot stomping slobber knockers like Making Babies and Lorelei

Featuring:   Gern f. – vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica,  Felicity Hamervocals, accordion,   Eddy Blake – double bass, Shawn ‘Gus’ Beauchamp – vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica,  Matt Watson – Electric Guitars, mandolin,   Chris Reid – mandolin, banjo

Track Listing:  1. Three Hard Knocks 2. For Love and Your Mother's Sake 3. Son, Your Daddy Was Bad 4. Shot Tower  5. Little Girl  6. Glen Jones  7. Lorelei  8. Rise Up  9. The Line  10. Making Babies  11. The Ballad of Mary Gallagher  12. What a Riot  13. Jesus We Sweat

Germaine Koh - Traffic, 2008
Traffic is a domestic light fixture modified to act as a light that monitors and responds to current traffic conditions rather than directs them. In this case it will react to foot traffic in the gallery space. The standard traffic-light colours have been expanded by the use of red-green-blue LEDs, to include magenta, cyan and blue. The closer to red the light is, the more congested or slow-moving the traffic is. Colours closer to blue indicate little or no traffic, and colours in the middle of the spectrum (yellow, green, cyan) indicate flowing traffic or transitional states. The work relates to many other projects by me that are concerned with communication systems and everyday behavoiurs. www.germainekoh.com....

Gordon Hicks - Whirl, 2008

Spinning the disk sets in motion an electronic drawing machine. Simple circular motions, originating with the disk, are combined by the machine to produce volatile drawings of surprising intricacy. www.gordonhicks.com....

He has worked with many diverse independent and major label artists including Feist, Ron Sexsmith, By Divine Right, Great Lake Swimmers, Wintersleep and Holy Fuck. Michael Klein - Citizen Dandy, 2008
Citizen Dandy uses as its raw material, the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American movies of all time. All the films included in the list were made in the first 100 years of American cinema (1896-1996). Citizen Dandy is an attempt at a new, seemingly random narrative made by assembling segments from each of the 100 films on AFI's list. The strategy used to construct this new narrative was to edit together segments in order as they appear on AFI's list. The segment used from each film also relates to ranking on the list. For example, the opening segment comes from the #1 ranked film, Citizen Kane. The segment used includes the first edit that appears in the film, as well as the shots that this first edit ties together. The second segment comes from the #2 ranked film, Casablanca and includes the second edit that appears in the film, as well as the shots that this second edit ties together. This strategy is followed all the way through until the 100th edit from the 100th film on the list (Yankee Doodle Dandy) is reached.
Citizen Dandy is both homage and critique of American Cinema. Although the various segments have been assembled in a seemingly random pattern, coincidences occur, narrative threads can be read and meaning can be interpreted.

(weewerk) Recording Artists From Toronto

FemBots

Announce The September 16 Release Of

"Calling Out"

MP3 for "Good Days" + One Sheet /Photo/Album Cover and More Info @ http://www.killbeatmusic.com/fembots.html or listen @ www.myspace.com/fembots

About to release their fourth album, Calling Out (2008) on (weewerk), FemBots have set off in yet another new direction while in many ways returning to their beginnings.

FemBots began as a home recording project of Dave MacKinnon and Brian Poirier and their debut, Mucho Cuidado (2000), featured songs written and performed on power tools, toys and broken down thrift store instruments. The duo quickly carved a unique space in the Toronto music scene bringing their post-industrial folk songs to the stage using tape loops and reel-to-reel machines mixed with often frantic live performances.

Their critically acclaimed second release, Small Town Murder Scene (2003), adopted a more atmospheric approach with traditional instrumentation and soulful laments.

The third FemBots record, The City (2005), built on this earlier work but taking it up several notches with banging piano chords, catchy choruses, soulful vocals, swinging guitars, woven strings and horns.  The City – that landed on several top ten lists for 2005 – pushed the stark black and white vision of their earlier albums into full technicolor.

FemBots originally envisioned their fourth album Calling Out (2008), as an entire album using an assortment of junkstruments, musical instruments created from garbage by artist Iner Souster.  Eight months into the project it became clear that the junkstruments simply were too unpredictable and too difficult to work with to sustain an entire album. Rather than scraping the project entirely, the FemBots used the junkstrument instrumentals they had recorded as rhythm tracks, the rock and roll chassis that the rest of the songs are built on.

Calling Out also marks another departure for FemBots. This is the first time Dave MacKinnon and Brian Poirier have collaborated with other musicians during every stage of the writing and recording process. In the past MacKinnon and Poirier wrote the songs, then brought in other musicians to fill out the arrangements. With Calling Out the songs were built up from improvisations with Iner Souster and drummer Nathan Lawr.

The result is a collection of pop and rock songs built on a foundation of odd sounding home made instruments, producing in the end their most straightforward and strangest record to date. With each new album the FemBots transform in ways unforeseen, yet strangely familiar, honing a new style from the old.
