We are doing our first ever residency, at the Empress. We asked some of our most favourite ever bands to play, and to our great surprise they said yes. It's gonna be super happy phun thyme. Here's a thingy Neilio wrote in honour of it--->THE MOTIFS SEPTEMBER RESIDENCY AT THE EMPRESS
The
Motifs are four Casiotones pawing at your door. You let them in and
they lovingly curl up on your lap, but not before scratching the thread
out of your best jumper within a ninety second, harmony-saturated pop
song. Earlier this year, they padded across Europe to
find sunny spots in corners and take over kind people's houses. Now,
with Swedish, German, UK and Japanese releases in their pouches, the
Motifs return to Melbourne to curate five very special Wednesday
nights in September at the Empress Hotel. Like all sly felines,
they always get what they want so they have assembled a list
of Melbourne's finest pop bands (and electronic musical instruments)
to break out at their month-long midweek mewsic festival. Each night
will be unique so don't miss out on a single one!
Wednesday September 2nd -
The Motifs + Denim Owl + Maudita
Wednesday September 9th -
The Motifs + Summer Cats + Francolin
Wednesday September 16th -
The Motifs + The Zebras + Darren Sylvester
Wednesday September 23rd -
The Motifs + Milk Teddy + The Audiobooks
Wednesday September 30th -
The Motifs + Midstate Orange + Pop Singles
Opens at 7:45, Starts at 8! $5 to get past the tough-as-nails cardigan-wearing door person.
We decided we're going to do something different each week. We'll at least get a haircut or wear fake reading glasses or something. And yes- we have actually learnt some new songs and stuff too... eeee. Plus we'll be having some surprise never-seen-before portable electronic guests from various eras, and some exciting merch desk items. Even we are not fully aware of the extent of the exitingness yet.

Our good friends Tailor Made for a Small Room (Japan), featuring members of 4 Bonjour’s Parties and Lost in Found play a special one-off show in Melbourne this Wednesday 25th February, with support from the lovely Sly Hats, the incredible Denim Owl + Brain Cobra Spectacular on Ice and the Motifs. Available on the night will be a very limited-edition split tour EP with the Motifs, featuring some previously unreleased songs from both bands. Some of us Motifs will also be joining in the Tailor Made band for some fun-time glockenspieling, casioing, singing and percussing. The show is at Bar Open, starting at 8 pm, and entry is free.

The Motifs have recorded our first ever Christmas song, just in the nick of time! Or possibly a bit late. Oh well, maybe we can re-use it next year. You can have a listen to it on our Myspace music player, or download the mp3: The Motifs - Christmas Lights
Anyway, hope everyone has a good holidays!

I recently participated in Peter's great podcast: Peter Joseph Head Audioblog It was sort of a casiotone special edition, so we talked about cheesy eighties keyboards among other things. Tom from the band Milk Teddy also joined in the discussion and shared his casio knowledge. Warning: if you're into recording or 'quality' music gear in any way you might find this unbearable, or else (hopefully) completely hilarious...

The Motifs were included in Wireless Bollinger's '10 Bands to Watch' series. If you'd like to see what we have to say for ourselves, you can take a look at the article, by the nice folks Alex De Petro (words) and Alex Kwakernaak (pictures).
