It is not easy to win the 15 minute performance slot. So far the Ill indies won and P City's Chops took it home. Where are the Rock the mic vets? Well T-Dubb answered the call. If Rock the Mic University was a school. T-Dubb would be a senior. He's been a supporter and RTM favorite since day one at the Royal Suites. RTM caught up with T-Dubb so he could finally tell his story. What happened to get Crunk Entertainment? How did Lights Out become a power house? How does he maintain being an artists and producer? It a time for everything & T-dubb time is now.
RTM:How did you get the name T Dubb? TD:The name T-DUBB came from the initials in my name..TW. T-DUBB is who I am.
RTM:What inspired you to rap and produce?
TD:I always was a music lover. I started out being a dancer. I won my first dance contest at the age of 5 at a Halloween party. Then i started doing poetry. That got me into rapping. I won a nieghborhood rap contest when I lived on 36th st in newport news,va when i was 10 and I kept on rapping since then. My dad is also a DJ and been djing for over 30 years in the newport news & hampton area. I also have brothers thats in the music scene here in VA (Murda Squad).
RTM:Let’s take it back what was your original vision for Get Crunk Entertainment? What happened with the label and its artist?
TD:Get Crunk Entertainment was my first label that I ever started. I had alot of learning experiences with doing that. We had a few hit artist besides myself like (Erratic, Niesh, Pusha & Mr. Kreep). We all were pretty new to this and business differences separated the label. I still have close contacts with them. 3 of them moved on to Major Movement (big ups to them grinders).
RTM:Why did you decide to start Lightz Out and how did you go about choosing your roster?
TD:I decided to go with Lightz Out Ent instead of Get Crunk because i felt like the word Crunk was a fase. When I first started GCE I was the only artist and Crunk style was all I did at the time..So that name fitted me. Lightz Out have a lot of meaning behind it..(example: When we make it to the top its "Lightz Out" for the industry cause we gonna takeover VA style). I hand picked the people that I got under Lightz Out Ent. The people I have under Lightz Out Ent was people I actually saw performing at events out here in VA and I loved the way they can move the crowd. Each of the people was out grinding solo but moving the crowd...exactly how I was doing it. So I figured if we all roll under the same camp and put in the work then we will be in the same line as success.
RTM:How did you go about signing Rock the mic favorite Young Lye and what the status on his project?
TD:I was in a recruiting stage and when I went to Rock the Mic I saw how Young Lye can move the crowd and how he get along wit everyone and that caught my eye. I had a plan in my head that if I get the right people in my label that we can make big moves wit hard work and teamwork. I came to Young Lye with my plans and he was all for it. Young Lye project is coming very very very soon. He already finished wit the project. He just waiting for the right time he feel he should drop it.
RTM:When can we expect an album from you?
TD:I have plenty of tracks recorded (over 100) so anyday my solo project will be hitting the streets. I actually 3 projects in the making right now so you should expect one from me very soon. My solo project is entitled "Aint No Newz, Like Bad Newz"...Lightz Out vol.1 coming soon.. Me & UBC also working on a project together called "From the Block to the Top"..
RTM:What’s the biggest difference between T Dubb as a producer and T Dubb as a rapper?
TD:T-DUBB the rapper is a very energetic person that loves the keep the party going and love to say things that makes people say "did you hear wit that dude just said..haha" or "damn that dude can put on a good show" I love to rap cause it lets you express yourself and tell stories while you doing it...who dont like a good story? T-DUBB the producer is a totally different person. Producing lets me show how versatile I am. i usually do a southern style for rap so producing brings out the east coast, west coast, midwest and whatever style in me.
RTM:Which artists in the game and in VA movement inspires you the most and why?
TD:In the game I can say Jay Z, LL Cool J, Master P, Ludacris, Diddy, Dr. Dre, DMX, and the reason i chose them is because they are people who came from the block and made something from nothing...by starting there own labels and succeeding in them. Locally i will say us (Lightz Out Ent), The Bornaturals, Abys (7 Arms), Double XL (Hood Platinum), Kenny Kenny, Jaskizzle, Trendsetters, Major Movement, Hoffla Boyz, Nephew, Live Wire, Cyko, Mz. Spiitz-Phire, RMG, DKG, Murda Squad, Chopz, Contamination, Redd, DT the Great, & Sean Archer...because every event im at they seem to be at and that shows me how determined they are to succeed in the music business.
RTM:How did it feel to win the 15 minute performance?
TD:It felt very good to win the 15 min performance. I been trying very hard at succeeding in the music bizzness and anyone that knows me will tell you that and winning the 15 mins showed me that the hard work is paying off...I had a lot of help from UBC and im glad to have them be apart of Lightz Out Ent.
RTM:How important would you say Rock the Mic University is to the movement?
TD:I believe Rock the Mic is very important to the movement. It gives people the opportunity to perform and meet people that's trying to do the same thing they are doing. You can find some of everyone coming in and out of rock the mic...rappers, singers, producers, graphic designers, magazine reps, talent scouts. Before rock the mic i really didn't have a place i can call home for my music. I was just getting shows whenever they came along. Rock the Mic help break us local artist into the local music scene as far as radio and opening acts goes. I have seen a lot of opportunities come in and out of Rock the Mic and that's what we needed in VA cause we have so much talent here that's not getting noticed. Rock the Mic also help show me how to put on a good performace. I learn a lot at Rock the Mic and i will continue to support it.
RTM:what can we expect from your 15 minute performance tonight?
TD:You can expect a very good show. We are going to bring something for everyone to rock to from the ladies to the goons..we got you covered...just be ready to party and have a good time and we will bring the noise....

Current mood: pissed off
I have been here doing my music thang in VA for about 5 years now and i been running into alot of bs people and scamming as mofos. There is alot of talent here in VA and hungry artist looking for a deal and alot of so called industry people, promoters, and even some fake ass wanna be dj's take advantage of it. Im all about supporting the "VA Movement" but scamming ass mofos is what keep the VA Movement down. Alot of people come here knowing there is alot of talent here and put together open mic spots and over charge people to perform. Shout out connects thats either old news and cant even help themselves or washed up careers and try to make themselves look good to make money off of people is unknowledged about the music game, and its a shame. Im all about making money but lets be resonable about this. If you are going to help people with there careers thats fine and dandy but dont tell lies to people just to make a quick buck. I also see alot of promoters come through and have opening auditions for celebs and over charge people for auditions...I mean come on...Its auditions!!!!..$20-$30 for a solo act is considerable in my eyes seeing that we most of them only give the artist 1:30-2:00 to showcase their talents to prove to the judges why they should open up for that celeb...Really it should be free auditions at a certain spot between certain times and the people who are serious will be there to audition and if u cant make the cut off time then better luck next time since yall are the ones looking for the talent but hey i know "money makes the world go round"....Some of them rigged and I know it cause I go to alot and I see the things that go down. Whatever happen to where you audition for somewhere and if they pick you, you get paid for winning and for a job well done and you also getting the satisfaction of opening up for the celeb??? People put there time and effort into what they do and for someone to scam them out of there money is a shame. Not only do you take that persons money and screw them but you make them not even want to persue their careers sometimes. Im not gonna mention any names in this but you know who you are. There are alot of people here that is all about this movement and does a very good job at sticking together and helping eachother out. but the scammers messes things up for alot of us. People wonder why VA doesnt "show love and support eachother"....The scammers makes alot of us want to just do our own thang cause they make it seem like people here cant be trusted...There are very good people out here that is out to help your careers....The Scammers needed to get weeded out!!!!!!
