Last week DiS spoke to the Beastie Boys about their forthcoming album. Surprisingly, they let us into some secrets about part 2, including the fact it features Bob Dylan?!

Hello,

This is a brief update from DrownedinSound.com to inform you (especially PR people, bands and labels) that for the next few weeks we're not receiving any CDs/Vinyl in the post as we're between offices and also because we want to try and see how it would be if we decided to become more eco-friendly on a permanent basis.

So, until further notice...

PLEASE REMOVE ALL POSTAL ADDRESSES YOU HAVE FOR DiS*. Thank you.

We may provide you with a new address in a few weeks but we want to see how this new environmentally friendly approach works out. In the meantime, use the wonderful powers of the web to send us stuff digitally or contact relevant individual writers for their postal addresses: http://drownedinsound.com/contact

Thank you,

Sean
Founder/Editor of DiS

http://drownedinsound.com
http://twitter.com/seaninsound

* = these addresses to remove include Junction Mews, Chilworth Mews, some Unit in Ladbroke Grove, some Unit in S.London and Palatine Road... we've moved around a lot and some people seem to still have very wrong addresses for us and we apologise if you have the incorrect address... We're considering setting up post-forwarding and will collect any items you may have sent in past few days, in the coming days.

If you're not on our email list you won't have had the below message, if you'd like to sign-up, head in this'a direction http://lists.drownedinsound.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/list/updates/

---

Merry Chrismukkah and Seasons gruntings to one and all!

This is the last mail out of the year before we disappear for a few weeks to watch Home Alone 1, 2 and quite possibly 3, taste test various cocktail combinations involving Ginger Beer and/or Morgan's Spiced and put our feet on a pile of Wired, .Net and music magazines and pop on some headphones to listen to some great music (in fact, if you have any suggestions for DiS' editor, pop them in this thread)

To keep you sated over the break we have compiled some of the best bits of 2008 to browse, re-read and/or that you might have missed. Meanwhile, click the "latest" tab and you'll see that we're continuing to trickle out a few bits 'n' bobs but it won't be anything like 'normal service' (whatever that is) until January 12th. When we return from our slightly extended break we will have a feast of 2009 preview content and a resolute rant or two.

DiS has biiiig plans for 2009 and the "new site", which has been riddled with teething problems (sorry!), is currently only at about stage two of twenty. For instance, you may have noticed over the past week or so a little facelift, improved urls and that our live listings are now more comprehensive than they've ever been. Plus you can finally buy tickets to various gigs (we're still adding new partners) but that's just the beginning of improving one corner of the site.

That's more than enough from us, we'll leave you to slurp your egg nog and listen to the snap-crackle of an open fire.

DiS hopes you all have a great break and we'll see in the yes-we-can Future,

Seasons greets,

Sean Adams

Bjork
Volta finds Björk taking a few steps backwards in order to leap forward – the new album possesses its fair share of Vespertine and Homogenic echoes but manages to feel entirely fresh at the same time. Propulsive, attention-grabbing songs sit shoulder-to-shoulder with tracks that are so soft and delicate the slightest surge in volume could shatter them irreparably...

The Stills

They're back! New band members. New album. Find out what went down when Drowned in Sound Recordings latest signings went out on the road with chart-toppers Kings of Leon from partying with A-listers to meeting Steve Coogan's brother. Out this week is their first single release on DiS, it's the single 'Destroyer' (YouTube) from their forthcoming album 'Without Feathers', our special UK version features several bonus tracks.

DiScover: Land of Talk
We're real excited about this lot from Montreal. Think the art-fuzz of Sonic Youth meets a cloud of Sundays and Cardigans popsome melodies, then throw in a bunch of predictable female comparisons to PJ Harvey, Metric and wotnot but away from those references, at the very heart of it you have a very special new band. They headline our stage on Saturday night at the Great Escape and then tour the UK with Besnard Lakes.

Battles
This week, NYC quartet Battles release their long-anticipated debut album, Mirrored. Abandon all your 'super-group' tags and math-rock pigeonholes: Mirrored is the sound of a super group, and anyone attempting complex mathematics while it's playing is likely to wind up with their grey matter dribbling out of one ear while the other dances to what's certain to be one of 2007's finest albums...

INTRO RAMBLE...
----------------------

Hello,
DiS is in a bit of a fizz today. We're so busy someone's head is gonna pop off and I'm afraid to say it "ain't gonna be me" because it probably will be my fault. Pressure builds and the festival season is already upon us with alsorts of chaos and trouble-making ensuring we're getting little sleep and less time to get back to emails or write them god darn reviews. This hasn't be helped by DiS being without internet, so apologies for little in the way of consistent updates. Sorry. Despite this, we now have over 200,000 readers every week, which is nuts and nothing I ever dreamed of when the idea to start this site was knocking about 7years ago.

This week half the office disappears back down to Minehead to DJ until the early hours and see alsorts of awesome bands at ATP (special preview up tomorrow!). The other half is off to the seaside, returning to Brighton for the multi-venue sxsw-esque Great Escape Festival where we're hosting a stage for all 3 nights at the Zap club where we're joined by the likes of Gallows, Land of Talk and new addition Rolo Tomassi, plus lots and lots more.

You can keep uptodate with my various shenanigans in a new regular blog I've started keeping. Yes this is an indulgant thing but y'know, this is the me-me-me-age, which is all rather odd but I read an article in Wired magazine that says people like to know what's going on and you can of course make your suggestions of changes, especially as I'll be using this to get feedback on the new DiS site http://www.drownedinsound.com/blogs/sean

I've been mostly listening to albums by Battles (demented, dented, disco, prog, dancing-like-an-idiot, amazing), Sea & Cake (just utterly lush, album for your summer), Elliott Smith (forgotten off cuts which're still better than most bands entire lives work), Deerhunter (mmm space-rock). The Maccabees (still the best new band in Britian!) and Interpol (a worryingly over-cooked in-yer-face rocksome return).

Anyways, this is a big ol' update, I'll leave you to read some other stuff and not moan about being too busy any longer and just get stuff done.
Yes.
Sorry.
Bye byes.

THE MACCABEES Colour it In
Quite simply one of the most refreshing debut albums of recent times. It doesn't try to re-write any songbooks or create anything new, simply inserts itself in the fold in your heart and rewires your soul as you dance uncontrolably. However, many of you seem to disagree.

DiS met up the real Interpol and talked with these cult-heroes. They said stuff about their new album like
"There's a phrase on the record that goes 'stay inside our rosy-minded fuzz', which is like that delusional state of mind where you tell yourself that everything's fine. The characters are in many ways avoiding reality – there's a lot of imagery in some of the songs, like the 'bluebirds on our shoulders' in 'Fake Empire', that's kind of surreal, dancing imagery, it has that unreal feel to it."

DROWNED IN SOUND | Weekly Update

__________________________________________

Welcome to a new week,

DiS is in a bit of a triumphant mood this morning, seeing acts we've been 'behind' for a long while rocketing to the top of the charts. We don't think it's all our fault but it is exciting.

That debut album-releasing JAMIE T fella, who bought his acoustic bass along to play one of our free-entry RoTa gigs two years ago (ish), and who we also tipped on Radio 1 to be the big thing in 2006 (whoops!), is in the charts at number four with Panic Prevention. THE SHINS have probably perplexed a bunch of people with their (debatably) greatest album to date, Wincing the Night Away, which has landed in the top 20 at 16. And the BLOC PARTY single, 'The Prayer', has risen to number four in the singles cha...

...Hang on! I'm not a pro at doing the chart run-down and Mike (who, for any Diver stalkers, just turned off Fall Out Boy's newie in exchange for The Decemberists, which he says "sounds like Genesis!") has just finished writing his weekly Monday run-down of the charts, filled with lots of little lolzome commentary that you've become accustomed to, so lookie here: http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/1584891

This week DiS is mostly exciiited about the return of THE RAKES, catching SPIRITUALIZED open for MASSIVE ATTACK, dancing like eeejits to !!! and the MINUS THE BEAR remix album, swaying to AU REVOIR SIMONE, seeing DAN SARTAIN and waiting for the BRIGHT EYES, SEA & CAKE and CRIBS promos to turn up. Oh, and our label-cats METRIC round off their UK tour this week with a special show at new 'indie' (read also: electro, hip-hop, etc...) super-club CHALK with added SeanDiS (That's me! Hi!) and Mystery Jets DJ Sets, plus Kate Nash, Crystal Castles and all sorts of other goodness. http://www.myspace.com/chalklondon

Anyway, this site don't run itself, it runs on tea and Mike will start growling if he doesn't get a cup soon.

REVIEWGASMS

__________________________________________

Album Review: COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE
Dan Wale makes some big proclamations about TCTC: "Next single 'Head' and 'Connect' both divert the album's course away from turbocharged ferocity and into John Carpenter soundtracks; though sonically familiar, they navigate heroically through 'China Girl'-era Bowie. It's eclectic stuff, and while nodding its head knowingly in the direction of familiar cairns and musical waypoints, is a far cry from the turgid hash that commonly comes our way."
http://www.drownedinsound.com/release/view/8815

Live Review: ARCADE FIRE
Arcade Fire are, officially, A Big Deal. DiS recognises this, so sent three of its finest pen-pushing purveyors of purple prose out into the London crowds to grab tickets to some of the Canadian collective's super-sold-out shows at the city's St John's Church and Porchester Hall.
http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/1585102

Single Review: SKY LARKIN
"One of DiS's tips for excellence in the coming year, are another fresh-faced combo straight out of Leeds; their itchy and scratchy debut seven-inch is equal parts punk nonchalance and glittery hook-laden rock 'n' pop. 'One Of Two' stabs wildly like the equally volatile two-piece Blood Red Shoes," sayeth Mike Diver.
http://www.drownedinsound.com/release/view/9008

Taking the MIKA
Gareth Dobson slates pop-tit Mika: "Life In Cartoon Motion is a smug, opportunist amalgam of the vices and non-virtues of Robbie Williams, Scissor Sisters and vaudeville-era Queen. Unfortunately for Mika, it carries none of the charm or charisma of said pop behemoths."
Album review: http://www.drownedinsound.com/release/view/9109

Single review: 2 PAC
"Stop it, The Industry, please. While every good necrophiliac will tell you that the plus of fancying dead people is that they don't say no, that's no reason to go raping a corpse ten years after it was buried."
http://www.drownedinsound.com/release/view/9315

Album review: THE NOISETTES
"Much as we enjoyed Karen O's transformation into a pathos-peddling rock goddess of globe-straddling proportions in 2006, some of us were left itching for a rock 'n' roll fix dipped in the same glitter and spunk that made Fever To Tell such a brazen thrill. Thank Christ for The Noisettes!"
http://www.drownedinsound.com/release/view/8844

Album review: ELUVIUM
"Aka Matthew Cooper – has slipped under the radar here in Britain for too long.... His music has made the moniker of Eluvium a trusted yardstick of modern ambient releases. Copia is the sound of Cooper surpassing himself, combining his patented minimalist drones with beautifully rendered piano; it's evocative of half-remembered dreams and murky awakenings with emotions of both love and unsuspecting astonishment."

DiS IS SiX SOON!
Or a thank you message from DiS Founder Sean Adams.

Hello everyone,

Firstly, thank you very-very much, we're celebrating six (6) years of DiS this October and putting on a few band-filled parties in London, Reykjavik, Glasgow and quite possibly New York too, as our way of saying thank you for supporting what we do, we hope you can join us. The fun includes a wrath of new bands, a few you'll know'n'love already and culminates in METRIC headlining our biggest DiS event yet at London's Hammersmith Palais on Hallowe'en with special guest DJs 'til 2am!

Before you scream "BORE-OFF MATE" and stop reading this overtly sentimental blogtastic message, please note that it isn't meant as one of those wanky mounds of trite from some CEO. VP. DR. KGB. asking you to spend a few moments to check out some new dullard function. This is simply a thank you from an assumed-podium (mine is not a high horse) to you, the wonderful-of-face-and-musical-taste members of our community for finding our site and sticking with DiS over the past six years.

In a time of surface-deep monolithic mass culture run by a handful of super-rich record companies and 'buy-it-all, think later' media giants, there's currently a predominant and thriving independent global music scene, with a lot of brave, forward-thinking music and this is because of people like you. We've put the time in over the past six years because we believe in this music (some might say a little too much sometimes) but it takes you good people parting with your hard-earned cash to re-address the balance and make this world built from foundations firmly rooted in artistry, rather than commerce, possible.

Sorry if I sound like some righteous god-botherer but having done a few interviews recently talking about the six years of DiS it has really bought home how stunned I am that I now run DiS the site, podcast and record label. I'm guessing not-a-lot-people-know this but DiS is something which I instigated in October 2000 when I realised doing an ezine on my own for two years was getting pointless and bringing people together could do so much more. So with the sound of At the Drive-In 'One Armed Scissor' ringing in my ears and after enthusiastically coercing people to create the site (thank you Matt Willson!) and write reviews (thank you one and all), sending emails and im's to reviewers from a bedroom miles away from any tangible music scene, it's hard to fathom it would still be going six years on. I never dreamt we'd have an office and it would be read by over 125,000 people from all over the world who log-on to rant and rave about things they've heard or things we've said or in most cases simply come to find out what's going on in the music world today. Every email and board post with a story of friendships made, bands formed, favourite bands found, records sold, new genre enlightenments, gigs packed out and careers kickstarted, all vaguely related by what we do, makes this mission feel worthwhile.

However, we know we can do more and do everything better, and rest assured as I shy away from the last sunny day of the British summer and batter away at the keyboard we're working like a Thai dock full of sailors to evolute and improve the ways in which you DiScover music, make friends with like-minds and plan your consumption of music.

We're rolling out new sub-sites over the coming weeks specifically for you to DiScover the worlds best new music before anyone else, bringing back the audio/visual page for you to see and hear things we think you'll like, there's a DiS Festivals site where you can find out what's going on in the Festival world... We're also going to finally allow you to contribute much more to the informational make-up of the site too. We're also bravely hoping to make DiS more international and less about geographical boundaries, whilst also making it easier to find out what's happening nearer to you. BUT THAT'S ALL I CAN TELL YOU FOR NOW!

Lastly, I'd just like to say I hope you had an amazing summer and that you'll spend the slightly darker and colder winter nights reading our special decade-so-far editorial lists and posting on our site between watching slightly less sweaty gigs or hopefully partying with DiS to celebrate this landmark in our history.

Here's to you,

Sean Adams
Founder of DrownedinSound.com, Aged 24.

P.S. Full details of our DiS 6th Birthday Shows will be emailed out next week.

Cutting Pink With Knives
"An extreme grindcore band on Adaadat with a knack of starting a riot. The vocalist screams like he's trying to get his throat out of his neck; the guitar player jerks and flails and gets caught up the bouncing, shrieking melee of enthusiastic noise boys. The music is violent, punishing noise, guitar and clanging beats rasping against spidery bass. Then, as suddenly as they started, it's over." - John Brainlove

Adventure Playground
Fred Les Inc's side project thang... what it sounds like, we don't know... cos our ears fell off... and were eaten... by bears... Siberian Winged Bears... who flew off with our digested ears... and pooped them over Cairo. Also featuring Henry from Harry Potter and a man who wears dead animals playing guitar with the energy of their evil dead souls.

Optimist Club
This uncouth four piece make weird, unpredictable noise and seem to try as hard as they can to steer clear of those boring musical normalities. Witnessing their particular brand of alt/prog/punk live will leave you physically exhausted (in a good way of course) with really quite wonderful twists and turns at every possible opportunity.

George Pringle
She takes a blog-esque approach to lyricism and pulls it through a Death-Cab-meets-Patti-Smith-o-Scope atop sounds inspired by The Kills and Cat Power. For her first live show since her life was hi-jacked by garageband, she promises a twist on karoke.

I Was A Cub Scout
Recent stars of Drowned in Sound's DiScover section and coming off like a splendid amalgam of The Postal Service and Digital Ash-era Bright Eyes. A two-man collection from Nottingham - rousing, rambunctious disco-pop joy, wrapped in punk-rock language and indie electronica.

The Low Miffs

The latest band to be given the White Heat Records treatment, having previously launched cult stars ¡Forward, Russia!, Les Incompetents and Comanechi. Scottish Low Miffs play saxophone-penetrated angular indie rock with a massive dancefloor sensibility and endless punk rock charm.
