Sea Of Is

songs for all seasons

By Evan VanReekum

Attempting to capture the upbeat atmosphere of summer, Sea of Is has given all of us a means to reminisce over sights and sounds of warmer weather in even the coldest of times.

Local singer/songwriter Jon Redditt, the man behind the subtle world of Sea of Is, has proposed to release four albums within the next year, each of which will correspond to the different ambiance associated with the four seasons. The first of the four albums, the summer album, was released on September 26th with great success thus far. On All the Little Things we are presented with songs of loving, leaving and coming home.

Branching out from the heartbreaking ballads of his first two albums, Redditt has offered us some more up beat compositions, exploring old time blues, ragtime, and most of all some of that simple stripped down acoustic pop that always sounds so damn good in the summer time.

The CDs will all be released under the new local label Vulpine Records; a label that has undeniably found success in spotlighting some of western Canada's talent. Aside from being...

Swimming in a Sea of Is. Broken City Sept 26/06

Jon Redditt, a.k.a Sea of Is

On a crisp Tuesday night, Broken City was standing room only as Jon Redditt a.k.a. Sea of Is took to the stage to perform his distinct style of music. The evening was the official launch party for his latest effort All the Little Things, a soothing collection of songs reminiscent of late summer and the warmth of good intentions.

With a harpist and drummer helping him out for a few songs, the soft spoken Reddit admits having others on stage helps ease his jangled nerves. Prior to a set, he sips on a few beers and mingles with friends and says it helps him ease into performing. "The anticipation hits this high point, then I calm down right before I go on," he says.

As part of the team running the indie label Vulpine, Redditt is understandably filled with praise for his friends and co-owners. A collective of musicians, artists, writers, and web designers, everyone works together to help get the music out there. "I have so many talented friends," he says.

As some rowdy revelers whooped and screeched during one of his songs, Redditt politely shooshed them and they simmered down. Later, he explained how he sometimes feels frustrated in a bar setting when people don't pay attention. "It's hard to play over people talking," he admits. "But you can't insult the audience. You have to be respectful." As a vintage picker during the day, he sifts through mounds of discarded clothes, looking for gems to sell at Divine, a funky vintage store on 17th Ave. S.W. At night, he creates the kind of songs that conjure up lazy summer twilights and budding romance.

As enthusiastic clapping cut through the smoke at Broken City, Redditt announced he was finishing his set. "Unless you guys don't mind if I go to the washroom," he said with a nervous laugh. Sure enough, the crowd clapped their approval and he disappeared for several minutes while people milled around, waiting. As he returned to the stage, the room took on a hushed reverence, clearly rapt with his soothing voice and softly strumming guitar. In typically modest fashion, Redditt says he was surprised and delighted with the large turnout on a Tuesday. "We invited people and a lot of them showed up."

Swimming in sincerity
Sea of Is singer-songwriter Jon Redditt floats to the top with self-effacing charm

SEA OF IS

Broken City

Sitting across from Jon Redditt on a bleary Friday night, the sole member and creator of Sea of Is warms up the room with sincerity, exuberance and self-effacing charm. Redditt is busy promoting the first of four albums, each representing the seasons but there are no Vivaldi references during the coffee shop interview.

The first instalment, All the Little Things, is meant to convey the spectrum of emotions he associates with late-summer.

"I had tons of songs and I chose the ones that were more light-hearted. They're kind of little ditties and I thought it matched summer," he notes.

Indeed, the tracks are full of hope and the flush of newly appreciated love. His voice conveys a sensitivity and warmth that is bound to garner a large following. But he admits to struggling with his nerves.

Despite his background as front man for spooky rockers Beija Flor, he still suffers from stage-fright.

"I'm nervous, but excited. I still have the butterflies playing live shows. I started recording a few years ago, but it's only recently that people have been offering me shows," he says, nursing a hot chocolate. "It takes a lot out of me to make it up there and do it all alone."

As the espresso machine shrills in the background, Redditt talks about the influence of his father who plays part-time in several jazz bands and who provided the clarinet backup on the song Kathmandu.

"My dad listens to ragtime. When I was a kid, I'm sure that I kind of scoffed at it, but it's kind of nostalgic for me now," he says.

While he lists bossa nova and what he dubs trendy, freaky folk as influences, he is driven to forge his own musical path.

"Ever since I picked up a guitar I wanted to make my own songs. I didn't want to play other people's songs," he says.

Coming from a punk background, Redditt says he still loves his music loud and fast and supports a wide variety of Calgary bands whenever possible.

"I think it's awesome here and I don't know why we don't have the same recognition as other cities," he says.

Zed Music has already perked up and taken notice of Sea of Is and has posted his DIY video for "Complicated Man" on its website, along with gushy praise. As one of the founding seven members of local label Vulpine Records, Redditt is keen to help other artists whenever possible and is planning to spend the winter in Vancouver helping to promote the label and Sea of Is. Again, people are noticing and Chinese magazine EXMUSIC profiled the fresh new label in its July issue.

His vibrant enthusiasm is unfaltering as he talks about creating his own videos.

"I'm probably way too ahead of myself," he says, laughing nervously and playing with his mop of curly hair.

Genuinely modest, and at times painfully shy as he shifts his lanky frame to and fro in his chair, Redditt sees a future filled with music, art and travel.

"I guess I'll just see where it goes, you know? I'll just keep on writing songs and keep on keepin' on," he says.
