.. Future Music
Consider it part of the paradox of post-modernism that Future Music,
a store specializing in vintage instruments, could serve as the locus
for some of L.A.'s most forward-thinking musicians. Indeed, everyone
from Stones Throw stalwarts Dam Funk and Peanut Butter Wolf to
avant-garde soulsters Sa-Ra, Smell staple Nite Jewel, and indie-rockers
Random Patterns and Division Day regularly frequent the Highland Park
institution, known for its peerless prices and selection, and its owner
Jack Waterson, an engineer member of seminal Paisley
Underground-affiliated band, Green on Red. Speaking with Waterson, you
instantly glean not only an encyclopedic knowledge of instruments made
prior to the MIDI revolution in 1983, but a paternal care impossible to
find at a big box music store. "It's all about inspiration —
helping people find a guitar or a keyboard where songs immediately
start flying out. It's about connecting musicians with something that
ignites the fire in them," says Waterson. "Selling musical instruments
is more personal than selling underwear. You have to see how it speaks
to their ears, their eyes and the creative parts of their soul." In the
summer months, Waterson rigs a notoriously monstrous sound system in
the back garden and books shows — with the goal to pair unlikely
acts together, and each band only allowed 20-minute sets. In business
for more than a decade and with an impeccable reputation in the
community, the future looks bright. 5112 York Blvd., Highland Park. (323) 344-0029, myspace.com/futuremusicstore.—Jeff Weiss

Mini-Wurlie 1 is done and on the road! Body: Only 400 were made back in 1972.
Student model 106.
They originally came on a large rolling frame. The frame folded in the middle for storage purposes. There were eight pianos mounted to the frame. Four of them have orange plastic tops and the other four are tan. The pianos would all share one set of electronics. One amplifier board powered all eight!. Each contains a small speaker for playback purposes. In order for them to be free standing all electronics must be placed inside each individual piano.
This is my first completed version of this free standing version of a miniature model 200/106 Wurlitzer electric piano.
Custom modified to accommodate the transformer, speaker, stand off for vol and vibe control and the amp board.
Solid and faithful true Mini-Wurlie.
A lot of work and a serious Hot Rod! Special thanks to the Maestro Ken Rich for the guidance and the inspiration.
Thanks to A.J.
for the tips about Esnipe!

Every now and then, when some forces line up just right, everyone gets showered with goodness. What a week for me and my associates from "Green On Red". First, on Wed. Chuck Prophet and the Mission EX with Paul Schaffer's ( nice work with the orcherstra bells Paul!!!) band played Letterman's show. WOW! Next I got an new location for my store "Future Music" 5112 York Blvd. Los Angeles 90042. And to cap off this week "Danny and Dusty" will play the Bowery Ballroom in N.Y.C. This group is fronted by Steve Wynn and GOR man Dan Stuart. On keys the beautiful Mr. Chris Cacavas. The power is strong ...The band kicks ass! Linda Pitmon plays drums. I wanted with all my heart to be there but well...So like I said, every now and then the tide really does raise the boats!
