Hello my dears....

I am writing a blog on my myspace page to tell you of the blog I've set up - separate from myspace....

I like to blog here, but usually only with pertinent information.
So the "Official Mary Scholz Music Blog" will be probably a little more random, and probably a little more fun....

www.marysmusicblog.blogspot.com - make sure to "follow" the blog (I think that's an option, like subscribing) so you can get updates!

WELL, it's finally October. And you know what that means...
NEW CD TIME!!

I spent the better part of my spring and summer in the studio down in Millville, NJ.
I was working with musician/composer/producer/all-around-awesome-artist Nathan Terry (fellow UArts Alumni) and am so happy with how everything turned out. I couldn't have asked for a better experience - when everyone has the same vision for the work, it is an awesome ride.

So I've posted a few songs off of the new album, and I hope you enjoy them!

Some of them are songs that have either been previously posted: I had a live version of "The Best of Life," a home studio version of "Love Me Still," and an old studio version of "I Miss You."

These are all new, full band, full awesome.

I'm also going to be posting my FAVORITE song off of the album soon...
it is called "Susanna," and incorporates Stephen Foster's "Oh Susannah" into my original song, "Susanna."

People that I have to thank for their endless artistic support on this project:
Nathan Terry, for EVERYTHING he had to add to this work
Charles Kevin Mauer, for the awesome album photos and piecing it all together
Jenn Steier for the cd design and my new logo (www.myspace.com/dragonnes_laire)
Gina Karlowitsch for aiding my graphic design issues
Scott Chruchman for bringing in the bass

Other thanks for all kinds of support:
My parents, without whom I could do none of this, my siblings, Nick, JRJMS, L+C, the Terry's, everyone who has ever listened, come to a show, passed on my music or website to another or talked me up, purchased a cd, any DJ that has ever played my music, and of course YOU. Your dedication makes it possible.

If you're in the Philadelphia area, or know someone who is, send them over the cd release party! Show details are listed below.

Love, Peace and Music

So I'm embarrassed to say that I JUST found out about about this great blog all about fun in Philly. Embarrassed because it's been up since February of this year, and is run by one of my very good friends!

The site is www.smallopinions.com and it's written and run by Olga and Lisa - they've got great entries about the best bars in the city, places to get good meals, listen to good music, and enjoy awesome desserts.

Live in Philadelphia or just visiting? Check it out!

Well is was quite a weekend for me in Orlando, Florida! I caught a flight Thursday evening to head to the Florida Music Festival - a weekend of musicians, industry and fans all coming together for a great time.

Saturday was the conference, which included panelists from Creed, Dark New Day, Collective Soul, Atlantic Records, Myspace Records, ASCAP, The House of Blues, and many many more.
In an awesome case of "in the right place at the right time," I ran into Sean Perry, festival and aXis Magazine founder, and was given the opportunity to perform in place of a musician who had to cancel. Major thanks to Sean for making the call, to Levi from "Million Year Echo" for lending me his guitar, and to David Hopkins, wherever you are, for not being able to make it!

Overall it was a very successful weekend, and I'm definitely glad to have been there!

(I took a few short video clips which I'll be posting as a video blog from the trip. It's quick and silly, but it's a good time)

So gas prices are obscene and rising daily, and the price of postage will be raised again on Monday, May 12. Everyone's cost of living is is going up...we're so busy paying you (non-specific) more to do what you do - when are you going to pay us more to do what we do?

The Best of Life was written as I sat around a campfire close to sundown last August, on Assateague Island. It was a long weekend of friends, sand, sunshine and laughter. I walked onto the beach from our campsite to really listen to the music that was forming in my head, and what came out was a feel good song about friendship and the irreplaceable joy and comradery that comes with it.

This recording is live from my first show at Grape Street in Sept '07. It was also the first time that I performed the song, just a few days after finishing it... hence a few fun hiccups that make it a little more enjoyable.

I love my friends and I don't know what I would do without them.

(The first verse is about times with friends in the city,
the second about time on the beach. Basically the song is about the fact that no matter where you are, it's just BETTER when we're all TOGETHER.)

The Best of Life
Music and Lyrics by Mary Scholz
(c) 2007

We were driving
Down into the city
Gathering speed and life
Over crossroads
By the railway station
Singing to the night

And as the radio played the streetlights swayed
And it seemed they were dancing along
And we laughed out loud at the world around
Cause the city was singing our song

Life is better when we get together
Cold or summer nights
We build stories straight into the morning
And that's the best of life

We were singing
'Round a blazing fire
Late one Thursday night
Sand surrounding all that's left of August
By the firelight
And as the radio played
The campfire swayed
And it seemed it was dancing along
And we laughed out loud at the world around
Cause tonight we were singing our song

Oh Life is better when we get together
Cold or summer nights
We build stories straight into the morning
And that's the best of life

You can spend your life just hiding in your walls
But the world is here when the stone around you falls
And as far as we can see
I think we can all agree that

Life is better when we get together
Cold or summer nights
Do you remember those blazing summer nights?
We build stories straight into the morning
And that's the best of life
That's the Best of Life
That's the Best of Life

New song up today, entitled "Jaded."

When I first wrote the refrain to this song, I was sitting in traffic in my car listening to some horrible top 40 hit (not that all pop top 40 songs are bad...it was just a particularly silly one) and getting down on myself for not having MY music on the radio...and realized that I have a hard time listening to anything new anymore because I am constantly comparing myself.

When I sat down to write the rest of the song, I was overcome with the knowledge of how easy it is to get lost in our own little worlds, completely unaffected by the world surrounding us.

For example, I'm completely aware of all of the horrible things going on from country to country - I don't believe in war, I'm furious over about multiple political maneuvers, I'd like to help underprivledged people across the globe...but I spend most of my time focused on ME, and MY LIFE, and MY PROBLEMS.

So this song is about no matter how AWARE we are, it's so easy to slip back into the ME...

Well the world is full of liars and cheaters and theives
And I cannot wrap my mind around the way it should be
When I wonder if this present or this future will pass
Wonder if this wave of competition will last
I'm looking at the paper cause I wanna see LIFE
But all my eyes are seeing are the people that fight
And I cannot understand the kind of lives that they live
Cannot understand the kind of futures they....

I'm so Jaded
When I hear anything that's new
I get so Jaded
All I can think is if that trash is on the radio, why aren't you?
Oh Baby
Why do you think my favorite color's blue?
I guess cause lately, I cannot manage to see past the fog to the truth

Well I'm walking past the buildings there they sing to their gods
Walking past the buildings but it's all a facade
Cause the people in the churches never really do pray
They only have to dedicate one hour that day
Oh if we could only bring a little joy to our lives
Bring a little love to husbands, children and wives
Well we'd recognize the faces of the ones we don't know
Recognize that we are all the same and that

I'm so Jaded
When I hear anything that's new
I get so Jaded
All I can think is if that trash is on the radio, why aren't you?
Oh Baby
Why do you think my favorite color's blue?
I guess cause lately, I cannot manage to see past the fog to the truth

Well the world is full of people that I cannot stand
And the world is full of people that lend helping hands
So I guess it's 50/50 towards the good and the bad
I guess it's 50/50 but we need more than half
Oh I'd like to join the side that is respecting life
I'd like to join the side that's fighting pain and strife
But I never can tell what side I'm really on
I never can tell cause I'm so focused...

I'm so Jaded
When I hear anything that's new
I get so Jaded
All I can think is if that trash is on the radio, why aren't you?
Oh Baby
Why do you think my favorite color's blue?
I guess cause lately, I cannot manage to see past the fog to the truth

Wonderfully talented actor Heath Ledger passed away today due to unknown causes. Despite his family's pleas for the media to not draw conclusions until an autopsy takes place, the news has given various speculations to his possible state of mind and emotional condition. Why is it so necessary for the media to treat celebrities as punching bags to be used for better ratings? Are these people not human beings like you and I?

Ledger was 28 years old, father of 2 year old daughter, Matilda, and one of the greatest actors of our generation. It is a sad loss for the acting community, as well as for the general community that should exist in this world. Please do not take this as an opportunity to gossip and point fingers. You would not want that for your loved ones, as his do not want it for him.
