John Carpenter's Halloween @ the Bagdad (3702 SE Hawthorne), 11 pm
--$3--

I hear-tell that in Rob Zombie's wretchedly received remake, Michael Meyer's psychosis is the result of abuse and neglect. Bullshit. "Halloween" is so effin' scary precisely because Meyers is a blank slate--as cold and dispassionate as the vacant expression of the Shatner mask he wears.

Hitchcock's "Psycho" set the tone for slashers, but Carpenter concocted the blueprint for all the quasi-supernatural killers that followed in their wake.

The flick starts @ 11, but come an hour early for rare performance footage of Bowie, the Violent Femmes and more--brought to you by the Classic Concert Series @ the Clinton--and animated shorts programmed by Floating World Comics. We may even through a bit of comedy at you, too...

The cat is de-bagged. Truth spills out. Simplicity runs amok. SuperTrash Saturdays are on. The new cult is mainstream. Don't be addicted to movies, be ridiculously addicted. Go to the neighborhood theater-pub with the biggest screen and sweetest, loudest sound around--it's the BAGDAD. I've heard it referred to as the 'bag,' or the 'dad,' even 'bagdaddy-o,' or my favorite--the 'baggydada.' Moving on, look at this movie line-up...and, good news--all shows are $3!

CENTER VORTEX

Shows start at 10pm, with live sets from Bridgetown Comedy; awesome 35mm trailers; unreleased vintage rock performances from Classic Concert Series (Bowie, Sabbath, Miles Davis, Pink Floyd, The Clash, etc.); and animation curated by Floating World Comics. Then at 11pm, the movie! Did we mention $3?

CAPSULE REVIEWS

Sat Nov 1 BATMAN (1989) Dir. Tim Burton

It's time to re-visit Burton's clusterparty of goth-broth and kitsch-stitch and see if Jack's Joker outfreaks Heath's lip-tics.

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Nov 8 HALLOWEEN (1978) Dir. John Carpenter

Okay, Rob Zombie tried, but Carpenter's homicidal groove is the stuff of thumping perfection--steady and terrifying as death itself.

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Nov 15 NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) Dir. Wes Craven

You could easily labor over college term papers about ELM STREET's dream-eating-reality-symbolism, but what I want to know is--is Freddy Krueger really Wolverine? SPECIAL COMEDY GUESTS "Kitten Breath...fearless sketch comedy touching from the trouble with roommates to anonymous bathroom sex."

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Nov 22 BODY HEAT (1981) Dir. Lawrence Kasdan

Another 80s postModern masterpiece, serving 70s sex-attack over a grill of 40s noir, BODY HEAT is an evil trip in a sin suburb with a scumbag lawyer and a way-too-smart nympho. Starring William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, with hyper-cute Mickey Rourke.

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Nov 29 (special afternoon matinee) A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983) Dir. Bob Clark

People love A CHRISTMAS STORY. It's the "STAR WARS" of Xmas flicks. Director Clark's mildly pervo handling of Jean Shepherd's riproarious "Ralphie" tales is, like the ad said, "A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas." You'll smirk your eye out!

Sat Nov 29 BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) Dir. Bob Clark

The priceless irony is that Clark also made the sickest Xmas movie out there. BLACK CHRISTMAS--presented in a re-struck 35mm print--starring Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, and Margot Kidder, is a uniquely disturbing 'sorority house meets strange killer' drill of skin-crawl style and some very unforgettable from-hell 'moancalls.' Don't miss it on the screen, big.

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Dec 13 STOP MAKING SENSE (1984) Dir. Jonathan Demme

But, Start Getting Excited! Why a big suit?Why a big suit?Why a big suit?Why a big suit?Why a big suit?Why a big suit?Why a big suit?Why a big suit?

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Dec 20 SCARFACE (1983) Dir. Brian De Palma

A wonderful holiday movie...tropical weather, sunny colors, friendly chainsaws, loving families, great guys, good blow.

(check theater listing for additional showtimes during week)

Sat Dec 27 THE SHINING (1980) Dir. Stanley Kubrick

Who doesn't want to see THE SHINING from the balcony of the "baggydada?"

What do you do the night BEFORE Halloween? The night before HE CAME HOME? Why, you go to a naturally haunted house like the Bagdad Theater to watch the PORTLAND PREMIERE of Eric Red's new ghost movie, 100 FEET.

OCT 30

BAGDAD THEATER 3702 SE HAWTHORNE

ONE SHOW ONLY

8PM

35mm print

We're excited to be doing the Portland premiere. 100 FEET is about a woman (Famke Janssen, X-MEN), released from jail for murdering her husband, a NYC cop. Under house arrest, she wears an ankle cuff (she can't go more than 100 feet). The catch is--her slain husband's ghost is still around, in the house, mean as ever...

in other words, HOME...NOT ALONE

Writer-Director Eric Red will be in attendance. You may know his screenplays for THE HITCHER, NEAR DARK and BLUE STEEL (the latter two co-written with Kathryn Bigelow). Eric also directed COHEN AND TATE, BODY PARTS, and BAD MOON. Appearing with Red, will be one of the actors, Michael Pare (EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS, STREETS OF FIRE).

100 FEET is a crisp, rocky chiller with moments of wracked emotion. It uses the genre of a ghost story to allegorize spousal abuse. The mood benefits visually from Ken Kelsch (who photographed Abel Ferrara's BAD LIEUTENANT and THE FUNERAL with Vincent Gallo and Benicio Del Toro), but the star of 100 FEET is Janssen. She's in every scene: tough, manic, vulnerable, sexy, penitent, very Scorpio...similar to Sigourney Weaver in ALIEN.

And there's a murder scene that makes EASTERN PROMISES look chic and weak. It's probably the best murder scene since SCARFACE.

NIGHT FIX & FLOATING WORLD COMICS PRESENT:

SUPERTRASH AUG 08 FILM FESTIVAL

SUPERTRASH re-arrives...!

On its way to being a 'regular thing', the fest we like to call SUPERTRASH bunks down Thursday thru Sun, August 14-17, @BAGDAD THEATER 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd.

You, the consumer, will receive 4 days and nites of positive mash-up utilizing the best of smash blockbusters, febrile grindhouse, and epic fantasy.

You'll also get lots of perks: like the world premiere of HEMPSTERS: PLANT THE SEED (go to hempstersthemovie.com), the second annual FLOATING WORLD COMICS ANIMATION FEST, with an appearance by claymation sorcerer Bruce Bickford, and the unpredictable results of our first live BEWDY & BEEST CONTEST.

Oh yeah, there'll be free matinees on Saturday with gratis coffee and wine tasting courtesy of McMenamins.

Movies:

GREASE. (1978) Dir. Randal Kleiser.
...an ensemble champ of brains-fucked-out fun, GREASE exuberates fantasies of sweetness while hamming up a bad seed...results are highly sexed. Who doesn't want to kitsch-freak with Rizzo, Kenickie, Marty Maraschino, Cha-Cha DiGregorio, and Leo (aka. Craterface)? Photographed by Bill
Butler (THE RETURN OF COUNT YORGA, JAWS, ROCKY 3).

ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. (1976) Dir. John Carpenter.
...minimalist master-riff by Carpenter, coming off the space trip of DARK STAR, ASSAULT occupies a similar immersive 'zone', swapping a jailhouse for a starship, the theme still has to do with human limit versus cosmic jihad. Specifically, the pan-ethnic gang known as "Street Thunder" cuts an oath "to destroy Precinct 13 and every cop in it!"

DEMONS aka. DEMONI. (1985) Dir. Lamberto Bava.
...produced by Dario Argento, DEMONS is perfect to see in a theater because it is about a theater whose crowd turns into really gross demons. Bandtrack of constant faux-metal and progtronica by Accept, Billy Idol, Motley Crue, and Claudio Simonetti (of Goblin) -- tops the throb.

LABYRINTH. (1986) Dir. Jim Henson.
...Teen-mean Jennifer Connelly disses her family to solicit cock of Goblin King, Jareth (David Bowie). It's been claimed that LABYRINTH is responsible for "the sexuality of women under 30." Photographed by Alex Thomson (DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN, EXCALIBUR, LEGEND).

AUTOPSY aka. MACCHIE SOLARI. (1975) Dir. Armando Crispino.
...unusual giallo by the director of THE DEAD ARE ALIVE and FRANKENSTEIN: ITALIAN-STYLE, starring Mimsy Farmer and Ray Lovelock, with score by Morricone...AUTOPSY is set in a morgue, deals with manic priests, sunspots from a heatwave, and murders.

ZULU. (1964) Dir. Cy Endfield.
...4000 Zulu warriors attack 140 Welsh infantry at Rorke's Drift in 1879 in KwaZulu-Natal, Africa. Michael Caine's debut. No computer graphics! Narrated by Richard Burton. This is the greatest movie.

Additional info:

Best known for his collaborations with rock iconoclast Frank Zappa in the 1970's (Dub Room Special, Baby Snakes, The Amazing Mr. Bickford), underground animator Bruce Bickford has influenced generations of artists with his original vision.

Prometheus' Garden (1988) is the only film over which Bickford maintained complete creative control.

Inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus, a Titan who created the first mortals from clay and stole fire from the gods, Prometheus' Garden is a dreamlike stream of an unlikely cast of clay characters in a violent struggle for survival.

SUPERTRASH 48 HR FILM FEST
BAGDAD THEATER, 3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Sat/Sun, May 24-25, 08

The Concept: After breaking records in Feb 08 with 2000plus ticket sales, SuperTrash returns to the ginormous Bagdad Theater for more glorious mixing of popular and obscure cinema. The 'magic act' of SuperTrash is in the curatorial realm. We are all about "context-driven-content." That may sound silly, but this is what it means: by creating an environment where big-budget commercial and ragamuffin exploitation films can intermingle, SuperTrash encourages what people already know, which is: these days, it is hard to tell the difference between art and trash. Is that good? It's better than good. It's Super. Trash.

The Films:

RUMBLE FISH (1983)
...Francis Ford Coppola's exquisite ode to brother-coded adolescence holds up as an abnormally artistic beatnik overthrow of Reagan-cranked yuppiedom.

THE LOST BOYS (1987)
...Quintessential 80s kitsch, THE LOST BOYS still commands a virtual kingdom of California dreamin' filtered through a glossy, Goth ecstasy. Who can resist?

MAGNUM FORCE (1973)
...The most sleazy of Dirty Harry films, MAGNUM FORCE interestingly births the whole zeitgeist of 70s television gun-adoration, pitting Eastwood against youngblood Vietnam Hitler-youth such as David Soul (STARSKY AND HUTCH), Robert Urich (S.W.A.T. and VEGA$), and Tim Matheson (ANIMAL HOUSE). Scripted without scruple by John Milius and Michael Cimino.

WILLIE NELSON'S 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION (1979) ...Never before screened in Portland, this GUARANTEED crowd-pleaser captures a 1974 Texas-style Woodstock in all its drunken, stoned prowess. Mostly it offers a sustained peek at a beloved songsmith named Willie, without whom, sweetness in country music just wouldn't be.

BOARDING HOUSE (1982)
...Another first-time Portland revival, shot on analog video and transferred to 35mm, John Wintergate's unclassifiable supernatural-slasher-sexball comedy wondrously anticipates the evil eros of millennial 'gorno' like HOSTEL, SAW, etc, yet produces a result that can be termed "bitchin'".

GHOST FEVER (1987)
...Do you enjoy Sherman Hemsley? Do you believe, as we do, he is the 'other Mr. T?' Then this is the do-not-miss of SuperTrash May 08. GHOST FEVER, directed by the notorious Alan Smithee, is the 80s ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Pooh-poohed as being an inept GHOSTBUSTERS knock-off, this Southern-tacky spook-show about racist ghosts, beautiful blond ghosts, breakdancing ghosts, and a boxing cameo by Joe Frazier, is consummate what-the-f^%-I-am-watching?!

Bonus Features:

Simultaneous with the 48 HR MOVIE FEST, in the 'medieval deco' lobby of the Bagdad Theater, there will be:
- Floating World Comics merch table
- A DARKER PORTLAND photo exhibit featuring vintage 1950s burlesque and crime-scene photos by Allan deLay. Visit this link to The Oregonian:

- Rock N' Rose clothes merch table

Detail from Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA - as rendered by Al Columbia 2007

Feb 1-3, 2008, a weekend of 9 unforgettable movies, live burlesque dancers, the return of The Famous Mysterious Actor Show, and a stunning exhibit of 're-imagined movie poster art' sponsored by Seattle publisher Fantagraphics.

THE MOVIES:
RE-ANIMATOR (1985, Dir. Stuart Gordon, 95 mins) ...a masterpiece of hideous gore and faultless drama.
MAD LOVE (1935, Dir. Karl Freund, 68 mins) ...Peter Lorre shines as a lust-bent doctor capable of anything!
ROAD HOUSE (1989, Dir. Rowdy Herrington, 114 mins) ...the most macho-hot movie ever put out!
PSYCH OUT (1968, Dir. Richard Rush, 101 mins) ...a sleazy expose of San Francisco 'free love' with Jack Nicholson as a stoner rocker on the trail of an acid casualty played by Bruce Dern-streaming-Jesus.
ROBOCOP 2 (1990, Dir. Irvin Kershner, 117 mins) ...incredibly undervalued sequel, stuffed with maniacal design and misanthropic ideology, Frank Miller's first film job.
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986, Dir. John Carpenter, 99 mins) ...no dis to Raging Bull, Scarface, or Blade Runner, but for select hordes, BTILC is the greatest 80s rush.
BUFFALO 66 (1998, Dir. Vincent Gallo, 110 mins) ...a lowlife fantasy chock with feline romance, family crap, and noirish cruising...love or hate it, it's cool.
RETURN OF THE DRAGON (1972, Dir. Bruce Lee, 100 mns) ...Bruce Lee versus Chuck Norris!!!
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968, Dir. George A. Romero, 96 mins) ...the one that makes you believe the dead will eat you.

SUPERTRASH is wild, perverse, beautiful, grotesque...subversively combining powers of Art and Trash into SUPERTRASH.

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - SPONSORED BY FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS
Re-imagine a movie poster for your favorite cult/trash movie!

***

Hi, we're asking artists who are crazy about movies to contribute artwork to the SUPERTRASH FEST taking place Feb. 1-3, 2008 at Portland's gigantic Bagdad Theater. Take a look at the attached SUPERTRASH press release to get an idea about the ambience of the event. Basically it's a film fest that combines fantasy, sci-fi, horror, action, live burlesque and a special art exhibit sponsored by Fantagraphics Books.

Here are the guidelines for the show: using any medium you choose, we'd like you to re-imagine an original 'movie poster' for an existing movie (preferably a movie that is either very trashy or very pretentious). You can send originals to be displayed at the theater, or you can submit the work digitally and we will print it out to display. The best submissions will be compiled in a book to be published by Fantagraphics. In return, for the right to exhibit and reprint your work, you will receive five free copies of the finished book, and three all-weekend festival passes.
