WOW!
The sights, sounds, and feelings attached to this past weekend in Detroit continue to ring in my head. What an awesome experience this year. I've been 3 times previous, but not last year, and I have to say this was the most memorable for me by far.
Some of the wickedest sounds all weekend, and great vibes coming from everyone in attendance - ruffly 15,000 each day I'd say. A well stacked lineup of some of todays freshest talent down to the forefathers of the Detroit techno music scene. Paxahau did a stellar job organizing this event, along with some key partners.
My highest marks for the weekend go to Guido Schneider (awesome live PA that had some of the biggest basslines of anyone, good patience and build to his set, one of the best live PAs I've seen), Gui Boratto (another amazing Live PA, overall flow to the set was perfect with all the right touches, I was anticipating Gui more than anyone else prior to the event, he delivered.), Richie Hawtin (does he ever dissapoint? well yeah he has once before for me, but this set totally rocked it, started off a bit redundant but by 45 minutes in he was laying down the hammer), Michael Mayer (an unsuspecting DJ set that kicked some serious ass, very well done, kept everyone jumping the whole time), Marco Carola (solid driving techno set was just the right timing) & Damian Lazarus (the man knows how to craft a set, no doubt - I sometimes wonder if it wasn't Damian Lazarus - would people stick around to see what happens? at times he could be a bit more busy with mixing and what not, but his track selection, patience in mixing, and the ultimate product is pristine), Gaiser (tight live PA with some tough chunky minimal techno, just right).
My mediocre marks go to Claude Von Stroke (great tracks, so so mixing), Beatport Stage (ground the damn turntables!), Luciano (some technical issues got him off on the wrong foot, from there it ended up decent), John Acquaviva (some fun tracks but overall it was too clubby for what was going on in-my-opinion, and too much with the Dan Diamond MC).
My lowest marks go to Baby Ford (ok so you can produce - mixing is another thing entirely), Christian Smith (more sloppy mixing, eh), Main Stage (while it looked great, and often times sounded great, to many times there was heavy bass distortion from over pushing the amps - fix it on the board, or send an SOS to the DJ and tell him to check his/her levels), Jeff Mills (he's a legend for sure, but his mixing skills are much to be desired, great tracks and selections)
All in all the event gets an A from me. I was loving every minute.

DJ Complex.
Just because you (the supposed DJ) own some records and/or cds does not make you a 'DJ'. There is an indeterminate amount of time and effort that must be slaved into turntables hour upon hour, day upon day, year upon year, until the craft is mastered. This is how it has worked for years, and I don't see things changing. Most of us know what a 'train wreck' sounds like by now, and while it can be comical at times, the flow is lost and the DJ is basically starting over again. But still, the mixing of records on beat is only the beginning.
DJs with expectations are in for a hard time coming. Take what you get, and enjoy it for every ounce of its worth. Strive on, push forward, get better, and better, give out mix CDs, and more mix CDs, let it be known - but don't Expect anything! There is a large gap between an aged DJ and a DJ that is just starting to play. Every small thing down to how you turn a knob, or how you grab a record from its' sleeve, everything develops and matures - all part of the craft of being a DJ - and why people will come out to experience this art form.
I'm given one of the toughest positions amongst the Indianapolis electronic music scene. Among the DJs here I pull a lot of strings, and I'd like to think I do it fairly well, and balanced. But I'm sure there are those that would disagree - and that's fine - tell me why you think so. There may be some genres that get less exposure than others, but that is just in the best interest of the club and its starting point - not necessarily a personal choice. All DJs that I book, I have either heard play out numerous times previous, or they have given me mix CDs to check out (yes, more than one). They are established and matured in their DJiing styles and techniques and deserve recognition.
I will have future open decks events to get a better look at some other anxious DJs in the area...no holds barred. Bring what you got and do what you do.
I'm tired of whiney ass DJs that expect the whole thing to just fall into their lap. Every DJ has been through the shit - horrible sound setups, jankey turntables, tore up mixers, broken monitors or no monitor at all, asshole DJ pre-madonnas that think they're better than you and treat you like dirt, or better yet getting your timeslot ripped from under you. On and on - we've all gone through it and it's just part of it. So deal with it or drop the ball and move on.
There is a lot of great talent in this city that has given worthwhile time and effort into becoming a good DJ, but more importantly, keeping a good attitude while doing it. That's what will take you far, if you have the talent to back it.
I'm every DJs fan, believe it. Do well.
peace, -Seth
