CALL FOR PAPERS: PopMatters seeks feature essays about any aspect of popular culture, present or past. | MUSIC > VOLCANOLESS IN CANADABy Joshua KlokeThe barren Canadian province of Saskatchewan probably isn’t the first place you’d go if you’re looking for jovial party pop-rock, but after hearing The Way Forward, the debut full-length from Volcanoless in Canada, you might start looking at Saskatchewan a little differently. The crisp, beach-party vibe of the record runs as far away from the traditional notions of the province as possible and keeps the torch burning the entire way. A clean, radio-ready-production value gives the potent harmonies of the three acoustic guitarists a nudge in the right direction, as the rhythms aren’t complex enough to warrant sufficient meddling. The band has perfected the art of transitions as the vocals keep a stellar pace over a variety of bridges, choruses, and the like. The Way Forward stems from unlikely sources but is guaranteed to keep your toes tapping. — 7 December 2009 |

This week's feature: Volcanoless in Canadai(heart)music Tuesday, November 3. 2009THIS WEEK'S FEATURE: VOLCANOLESS IN CANADA Volcanoless in Canada, The Way Forward (Self-released)
WHORadio-friendly Saskatoon quintet. DISCOGRAPHYVolcanoless in Canada ( Self-released, 2006) The Way Forward ( Self-released, 2009) IN A NUTSHELLIf there's any justice in the world, The Way Forward will make Volcanoless in Canada one of the biggest bands in the country...and beyond. THE STORYAs anyone who has read this blog for any length of time has probably noticed, I've long been saying that Saskatchewan is the next great hotbed of talent, the city (well, province) that's suddenly going to have a "scene" that everyone tries to get a piece of. And, obviously, thus far that hasn't come to pass; as far as I know, there aren't really any places talking about the "SK Sound", or playing up a rivalry between Saskatoon and Regina. Having said all that, and recognizing it as a cautionary tale against making predictions of this sort, I'm still going to say this: if any band is going to put Saskatchewan on the map, musically-speaking, it'll be Volcanoless in Canada. It's not that they're any better than any of those other bands (I'd probably put them behind, say, Rah Rah and Library Voices, but ahead of Polymaths and Ultimate Power Duo), but rather, they're by far the most accessible band I've ever heard out of the province. For that matter, they're one of the catchiest, most accessible bands I've ever heard, period. I've been searching my brain to figure out who Volcanoless in Canada remind me of, and -- apart from brief moments where I thought the answer might be Fall Out Boy or Panic! At The Disco -- I really can't think of who it is. In large part, I guess, this is because the world isn't exactly overflowing with dancefloor-friendly rock bands whose primary instrument is acoustic guitar (three of them, in fact). And part of it may just be that The Way Forward is filled with songs that are so instantly catchy that they just sound like you've heard them countless times before. I mean, take a song like " Mexican Circus (March To The Holly Dome)". It's got a pretty simple melody, but it's so irresistably fun that it's hard to not want to dance the moment it comes on. Further, the same could be said for any number of songs here, from "Make Up Your Mind (Rm. 5)" to "Forevermore (Wah! Oh!)" to "Invincible (Charmed)". This is just one of those albums from which any song could conceivably be dropped into the playlist of any music-playing outlet in North America, and it would not only sound like it fit in, it would also stand out. Obviously, that's not something everything will enjoy. There are some people who just have an aversion to hooks (as is obvious to anyone who read the Metric comments in this year's Hottest Bands poll). But for everyone else...I have a feeling that this time, I'm going to be right when I say that Volcanoless in Canada are going to be huge, for the simple reason that The Way Forward is guaranteed to stick in your head forever. |

Hi to All!,
Where did we disappear to!? ...
Alrite! Volcanoless is presently in Montreal. We couldn't be more ecstatic!
Rather busy as of late with the Amazing summer festival folk season, the new Album release, and now into our Eastern Fall tour- thanks to everyone who came and danced & partied! Luckily, we secured some recording time, all this Week, with the radically rad Kees at the Treatment Room in the wonderfully situated Mile End Neighbourhood, a place virtually flooding with Light, Art, and Solid Vibes.
So, although we're still hoping you're happily digesting the way forward, we just could not pass up this delicious opportunity to lay a few more new songs down!
Let's See/Hear What Happens...
Yours in music,
V*I*C

19 AUGUST 2009 Volcanoless in Canada (photo: facebook.com)
They call their music “sexy acoustic-indie-dance party” over at their Facebook profile page, but I don’t know if that genre plug-in does justice to Volcanoless in Canada’s frantic, frenetic sound. Hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, this quintet make a pretty glorious racket that blends elements of pop, punk, ska (I hear it), rock and disco into a smoothie of sound that’s perfect for summer backyard BBQ parties. The fury of three five-string acoustic guitars drives the melody into your head while the beats and rhythm force your feet to foxtrot. How could you not love these guys?
The band’s new LP, The Way Forward, is a sleek and lean collection of songs designed to showcase their tight playing adept songwriting skills. Opener “Make Up Your Mind (Rm. 5)” jumps out of the speakers, getting the party started in fine fashion. “London In Love (The Bird’s Nest)” slows the tempo down long enough for you to catch your breath, only to lose it again as this plaintive ballad leaves you speechless: not only can these guys party, they can perform beautifully, too.
Why are these guys not on commercial radio? I have to agree with Bryan at Herohill.com: Volcanoless in Canada are far better than most of that mindless “insta-rock” that is currently gracing our nation’s music charts. These guys have more heart and personality that all of the Hedleys and Simple Plans put together.

YES!!!... After a few weeks of some sketchiness with the web links, we're pleased to announce our new album the way forward. IS available for download and physical sale ONLINE. Help us out by picking up a copy & telling some friends: Booya!
Available at:
"We knew these kids had hustle... if they were American and had a hotshot publisher they'd ride that sucker to the bank." - ChartAttack "Three acoustics fly around the intricate melodies, bobbing and weaving with a remarkable precision. The songs power forward with rapid strums and complex transitions, but the band never loses focus on making the crowd move." - Herohill "I don't know how they did it, but they inherited a sense of life we can only hope to claw hungrily at. The ragged glory of the the way forward. is no trick of the heart- the places it takes us to are real, and the people we meet along the way are real." - Perfect Sound Forever

THE WAY FORWARD Volcanoless In Canada Independent 9-out-of-10 I suspect Volcanoless In Canada will always be a band that I will listen to with something of a jaundiced ear. As a journalist I’ve been covering this band for some time now since both Mitch Lysak and Joel Hryniuk are from Yorkton. As an occasional music judge, I’ve also got to review these guys on stage a view years back. The band actually finished second in the competition to the Foam Lake-based Go. Had they had the material from this new disk that day it is likely the order of finish would have been different. The Way Forward is a major step forward for Volcanoless musically, and that is saying something, since their debut album was excellent in its own right. But, that initial disk came out quite some time ago, and in the ensuing years, Volcanoless has become more mature and worldly in their music. That I suppose is only natural considering the band has toured a ton since the first disk was struck, including several weeks in Britain, a tour which obviously influenced these guys as it pokes its head through in the music on the latest effort. The disk starts off with Make Up Your Mind, a solid cut and from there Volcanoless stays high energy throughout. And, therein lies the true secret to what makes Volcanoless as good as they are. This band is about energy. You can hear it in the guitar work of Levi Soulodre, Hryniuk and Lysak, and of course the base work of Enver Hampton, and more important in the lyrics of the band. This is of course guitar-powered rock, yet the band never lets the guitar work overshadow the vocals, and that is a major plus, because they can write songs. The best songs here are pretty simple to select, pick any of the 11, and you are going to be right. That said, I particularly like House of Souls, Shedding Skin, Just Tell ‘Em Ye Alrite, Mexican Circus and A World Soaked In Gold. If there is any justice in the music world, this in the disk which should launch Volcanoless onto much larger stages. This CD is about as good as it gets in terms of content. Just an excellent job. Buy this disk now. Check it out at www.volcanolessincanada.com -- CALVIN DANIELS

New Music Canada Track of the Day August 4: Volcanoless in Canada "Mexican Circus" Posted by Amanda Putz at 12:00 AM |
Ideally I wouldn't highlight the same band on my T.O.D. in less than a year's time span. If there's a band worth making an exception to that rule, it's Volcanoless in Canada. I brought the Saskatoon band to your attention back in February with She Moves from their self-titled 2006 album. They've finally come out with a new one, called the way forward. It's an appropriate title for a band that has honed and tightened its sound the way V.I.C. has over three years. As I'm really into a T.V. show called So You Think You Can Dance, as soon as I heard Mexican Circus I had a visual of two of the incredible dancers in the Top Ten bringing the Circus to visual life in a sexy hybrid of samba and hip hop. The tune's still got the signature Volcanoless triple-threat of acoustic guitars, but in this song it's the bass line that walks out the real melody. Sprinkle is some maracas for the Latin sexitude and it's a hit! I'll be seeing the band again in Regina this coming weekend at the Regina Folk Festival. If you plan on making it out come say hi. I'll be the one l ooking complicated doing a samba-hip hop shuffle.

Volcanoless EruptionBand launches sophomore diskStaff Writer
“We were having fun and molded it into Volcanoless-form and it worked. It’s exciting, and it’s different. It’s what we wanted. Everyone has much more of an influence on this one as musicians.” — Mitch Lysak
Yorkton music fans are no doubt familiar with Volcanoless In Canada, a band which features Mitch Lysak and Joel Hryniuk, both formerly from the city. The band, which recently played at both the Yorkton Exhibition and The Spot in the city, has just released its sophomore CD The Way Forward. It is a recording Lysak admitted took an extended period of time to come to life, although the reasons for the delay was generally good reasons. Volcanoless’ line-up includes Lysak on vocals and guitar, Hryniuk, Levi Soulodre on guitars and Enver Hampton on bass. The band also introduced its new drummer, Brad Heck, at the recent performances in Yorkton. “It was a long time between our debut and this one, which was completely unintentional,” he said. “To be honest, it was mostly out of good things continuing to happen, and doors continuing to open that delayed our writing and recording.” Lysak said the additional time was an opportunity too, in terms of the maturity of the band. “This was in order to focus more on honing us in as a group, as a band — tightening things up immensely in the live set and gaining the experience of playing live in different venues and having different experiences within that,” he said. “We’re so fortunate to have things catch on like that, and to have been able to ride the wave of those songs as long as we did.” Lysak said they got a lot of positive mileage out of the band’s debut effort for a CD they did themselves. “It was self-released and initially buzzed about locally here by friends,” he said. “Then we took a while exploring Saskatchewan and Western Canada, with an unforgettable life-changing experience at the Western Canadian Music Awards in Moose Jaw. From there, it went from provincial-level to national-level. We were able to tour across Canada on three separate occasions, invited to showcase at numerous ‘new-music’ festivals (Canadian Music Week in Toronto, NewMusicWest in Vancouver, SCENE in St.Catharine’s). It was a blast. And it’s where we really got to put our music and our persons to the full test, constantly playing strange shows, in strange places to strange people. It was great. But it all took time. And it continued. Then the story went international. “We fortunately got to take our music overseas to London, UK! It was remarkable. “..a whole month touring UK,” said Lysak. “None of us could believe it. It has been the highlight of our being as a group thus far. But that obviously took some time as well.” As a result of continued success Volcanoless In Canada really only began pursuing the new CD late last year. “We were able to put most of the material together for The Way Forward after returning home from England, which took most of the fall last year,” he said. “Recording was expected to be a quick process, done here locally over a few weeks in February of '09. It took longer. “I remember it being sometime in March when we were contacted by Mr. Alex Newport, who produced records by Death Cab for Cutie, Mars Volta, At the Drive In, from Brooklyn, saying he loved the songs and would be happy to hop on board and work with us. It was unreal. “Suddenly everything was brought to a complete different level, professionally, which only meant more weeks of sending off hard drives, listening and critiquing mixes, and constantly making contact from here to NYC. It was a surreal experience to go through. Sending it off to Seattle to master; even that process took a month. “Our guitarist, Levi (Soulodre), went through the most unbelievable ‘cave-man’ beard growing experience in promising not to shave until the album has been released. “I am very happy to report his clean-shaven mug.” The songs on the new CD are in part reflective of what has come before for Volcanoless. “There are 11 songs that made it to the album. About five of them were written along the entire journey since our last (CD): touring, forming as a band and exploring ourselves creatively after finishing our first album,” said Lysak. “They have a similar feel to what was heard on the first, light-poppy-catchy-punky-dance, sorta stuff that makes us feel good. I still did most of the writing on these songs, similar to the first album.” The remainder of the album comes from gaining new insights on life from afar, said Lysak. “But what really ups the ante on this record, stylistically, is the other 60 per cent of the songs that came out after we had our minds blown apart from a month of craziness in Europe,” he said. “Everyone all of a sudden had these interesting ideas and areas they wanted to explore; all of us just trying to be different and unique a bit from what was going on, both with us and anywhere really. “We were having fun and molded it into Volcanoless-form and it worked. It’s exciting, and it’s different. It’s what we wanted. Everyone has much more of an influence on this one as musicians. It really keeps you on your toes.” There are even a pair of references to Yorkton on the album, said Lysak. “Track two Mexican Circus (March to the Holly Dome), lyrically portrays the low and self-degrading choices made by those stuck in a world with nothing to do but consume at a single place ‘til at a toxic level enough to make mistakes. A mock-type track on the ‘bar flies’ of my age, stuck in the rotting world around them in the choices they’ve made,” he said. “The more positive, London in Love, about experiencing the rest of the world on a abroad trip, while still feeling and yearning for what’s left at home, contains the line ‘Soon, we’ll back wiping our face tonight in Canada. Oh Canada! Soon we’ll be back spending our Friday nights, under Broadway lights.’ in reference to our times cruising and roaming the streets of Yorkton.” In terms of where Volcanoless hopes to take the new CD, Lysak said they are hoping this will be their true break-out effort. “Short and sweet, we do have a lot of people working on our side to make something come from this, and we’re very happy to have their support,” he said. “We chose to self-release this album for now, which gives us a lot more freedom in being able to get it out to everyone waiting a lot sooner, and able to recoup our financial means necessary for future plans of recording and wanting to be continuously releasing new music. It works out better for us this way for the time being, and there is no rush in committing right now, yet not saying what might happen when the right time comes.” As for financing the album Lysak said they have to thank the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskMusic for grant support. What comes next for the band is life on the road in support of The Way Forward. “We’re looking forward to getting back on the road touring, and being able to run the full circle of promoting a lot faster than the last time around,” said Lysak. “We learned so much from everything that went on the entire three-year period. Things are just so much more together now, more efficient. It really opens up to the doors to not only a lot more possibility but also a lot more fun. “We begin this summer with a fun stretch of promotional shows and folk-Festivals across Western Canada, including the Yorkton Exhibition, Regina and Brandon Folk Festivals, and the Ness Creek Folk Festival in Big River. It will keep us busy until Sept, which is always a great time to hit things around a few University’s and hot spots once the kids are back in town and everyone is excited. “(The) end of September we start off on an Eastern Canadian tour in support of the album, hitting Toronto’s infamous Horse Shoe Tavern (Indie music hot spot!) as well as recording a five-song session in Montreal. “This is all on route to CMJ in New York, probably the most esteemed indie-music festival, highlighting up and coming new acts. It’s a five day jaunt at the end of October, and will be our very first time in NYC. It’s going to be mind-blowing. And hopefully continues from there.”

As we move in to August the UK’s promised ‘barbeque summer’ seems to have fizzled out rather, replaced by muggyness and rainstorms. Spare a thought though for Ottowa resident and Oh!
