Tampa Bay Musicians and Music Industry Professionals Explore the Business of Music

This second annual FREE symposium for Tampa Bay musicians & the music-loving general public offers seminars and workshops on the business of music-making to explore how to nurture and develop careers in the modern commercial environment. Woven through the two-day schedule are a number of special live performances and showcases.

Tony Michaelides Presents an Interactive Discussion of His Lessons Learned from Rock and Roll

The Homemade Symposium weekend begins early with a very special event featuring Tony Michaelides. With over 30 years in the music business, Tony has worked with artists ranging from David Bowie to U2, The Pixies, The Stone Roses. He’ll be sharing stories plus some never before seen pictures and videos from his experiences as a record promoter in the Manchester, UK where he lived through the “24 Hour Party People” scene. The discussion will include clips from the popular film “24 Hour Party People” combined with personal behind-the-scenes commentary.

Schedule pending but events will be held at various venues along 19th Street and 9th Avenue in Ybor City. Locations to include the Ybor City State Museum Park, REAX Music Space, Tre Amici at the Bunker, Mermaid’s Slipper, and Arnold Martinez Art Gallery. A highlight will be a performance by Cuban musician Alfredo Rivero’s new band, Manigua.

Rosa Rio, Tampa’s own 107-years-young Wurlitzer wizard and jazz pianist, and Paul Wilborn performing music by composers Rosa knew such as Cole Porter and George Gershwin

A keynote address from Peter Wells, visiting NYC Co-Founder of Tunecore, the country’s premier digital media distribution company

Workshops and panel discussions with speakers from a cross-section of Bay area record labels and press, with topics ranging from alternative media promotion to electronic press kit development and web design — including “Meet the Press: A Conversation with Area Music Critics”

The Homemade Symposium is organized by the Artists & Writers Group in partnership with Hillsborough Community College-Ybor City Campus. Bay Area Arts and Music Organization (BAAMO) and Ybor City Development Corporation are also partners. Other sponsors include Creative Loafing, REAX Magazine, and New World Brewery.

The partners and sponsors are dedicated to supporting the Tampa Bay area cultural community with events such as Homemade Music Symposium, Deep Carnivale: Celebration of Words, the Ybor Festival of the Moving Image, and the Florida Bandango, an unofficial showcase of Tampa Bay talent held on the first afternoon of the legendary SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas.

Is getting an official showcase a long-shot for an unsigned artist or group? Undoubtedly. But it still might be worth your while to apply and see if the Fates are smiling.

EVENT OVERVIEW
HOMEMADE is a symposium that will provide workshops that matter to emerging and seasoned musicians from the Tampa Bay area. Hillsborough Community College-Ybor City campus (Tampa) is a partner and will host the event in their new Performing Arts building located at Palm Ave and 14th Street, across from the Cuban Club.

The symposium is free and open to the public and is kindly supported by a grant provided to the Artists and Writers Group from the Ybor City Development Corporation. The Bay Area Artists and Musicians Organization (BAAMO) are assisting with organizing the event. Participants and area musicians will also present performance showcases throughout Ybor City after the symposium ends.

"This is Radio Clash" - a tribute to the words, music, and attitude of the pioneering and political rock band, the Clash.

To celebrate their legacy and musical diversity, WMNF is presenting over 17 bands and solo performers ranging in style from Rock to Reggae, Cajun to Folk and almost everything in between. All the bands and solo performers will interpret their favorite Clash classics in their own style on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa. Doors open at 4 pm, with music from 5 pm until midnight.

Aspiring artists are welcome to perform their version of a Clash song at the open-mic portion of the program, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.
