Through The Eyes of A Soul Flower

Image

Her words blossom just as beautiful as her beauty and her stature catches your eye causing a second glance. Her name is Soulflower and she has shared the mic and stage with respected emcee's and vocalists such as: Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Outkast, The Roots, The Fugees, Black Eyed Peas, Common, KRS1, Saul Williams, De La Soul, Jessica Care Moore, and so many more. She's speaking out on the importance of positive hip-hop, as the founder of "Queendome", a worldwide organization of conscious women in the arts, and as an avid supporter and member of the Universal Zulu Nation, Soulflower just doesn't talk about what needs to be done, but acts on it. The niece of the amazing Betty Wright, she holds a strong voice of what needs to be said more in hip-hop...positivity and upliftment!

Her song Young Girl, which you may have heard in Macy's commercials, is a pure example of the positive light that this queen shines upon her audience.

Not only is she a talented emcee, but she also holds a strong stature as a home-schooling mama. Raising her youths in positive light and atmospheres. Her spirit sheds light on conscious thought and the lovely Soulflower takes a moment to share with us her thoughts about her life as an emcee, the joys of being a mother, and her take on life in his world.

ymib.com: When & where did you first meet your love of music?

Soulflower: I don't remember a specific time or place when I first fell in love with music. I remember always having the love. My father's a professional jazz pianist so I would hear jazz everywhere, all the time. My real love and appreciation of music began and is rooted in jazz.

ymib.com: Through your music you exemplify and send messages of consciousness and truth. What are your opinions on why the mainstream music industry shuns positive vibes on the radio airwaves?

Soulflower: The mainstream music industry shuns positive vibes on the radio because it's a strictly supply and demand money making industry and thay think they're giving the people what they want. They feel like since the masses aren't running around buying and supporting the more conscious artists they don't want to hear them on the radio. The problem is that the masses never were given a choice or option. They only buy and support the "mainstream" artists because it's all that's being played on the radio and video. If they pushed the more conscious artists the masses would run out and support them. Unfortunately this country is full of to many followers who will jump on whatever's popular. If you only offer the people Kool Aid when they're thirsty, most will no doubt drink down the Kool Aid. If you offer them the option of Kool Aid or 100 percent juice most will no doubt choose the 100 percent. The people just need to be offered an alternative choice.

ymib.com: What has been some of the biggest lessons in life that you have gained from your journey's thus far that you would want others to know as well?

Soulflower: When life is based on unconditional love and good intention there is a higher overstanding that all things are divine. A great lesson in my life has been that you can come out of struggle stronger and wiser. When you truly overstand particular struggles you never have to repeat them. There are too many folks repeating the same struggles over and over.

ymib.com: In your opinion, what is the definition and characteristics of true hip-hop, and do you feel that hip hop artists hold a responsibility to the political upliftment of African People in our world?

Image

Soulflower: The definition of true hip-hop would be the same definition of a true poet. A true hip-hop artist steps out of the "box" and is a leader and individual. They speak from there soul. It doesn't have to always be uplifting as long as it's truth. Real hip-hop to me is when I can listen to a song without the vocals and the beat takes me over. Then I could drop out the whole track and just listen to the vocal and they can take me over. Then I could just focus on the lyrical content and that could take me over as well. When all 3 take me over, I consider that TRUE HIP-HOP. I feel that since hip-hop has such an influence of so many kinds of people worldwide, the hip-hop artist has a reponsibility to the upliftment of all people worldwide.

ymib.com: What inspirational songs, organizations, movements, books, or movies would you recommend someone to listen to, join/research, read, or see?

Soulflower:  Some of my favorite books are, Flower of Life by Drunvalo Melchesedek, The Art of Shenku by Zeek, Metu Neter and Egyptian Yoga by Muata Ashby. There is a man named Ashra Kwesi who released an educational lecture DVD series full of truth. I mostly listen to Roots reggae. Most of roots is inspirational and rooted in spiritual consciousness and awareness. In Hip-Hop i listen to artists like KRS ONE and Talib Kweli.

ymib.com: How do you feel about home/un-schooling, and in what specific ways are you able to incorporate creative teaching & what you do in life into your children's learning environment?

Soulflower: I live in Miami. There are very little options in the way of sending my children out to school and there are so many lies within the schooling. I've been homeschooling from the beginning because I don't trust the system to raise my child. People say I'm shielding them from the truth. I say I'm shielding them in the truth and from the lies. I need to take control of their education and what they receive, hear and see while I can because when they reach a certain age it's on them. I need to know I did all I could do. I incorporate creative teachings by having them practice their instruments everyday. Get in the studio to create tracks, writing poetry etc... They hang with me all the time so they're usually in a creative atmosphere.

ymib.com: What 3 things would you tell your son to never take for granted in a woman?

Soulflower: Her tolerance.her ability to forgive and her love.

ymib.com: What do you love most about being you, being a woman, & and mother?

Soulflower: What I love most about being me is being a Queen and a mother. What I love most about being a woman is having the opportunity to be a Queen and a mother. There is no higher blessing for a woman than to overstand how worthy and divine she is. To be a Queen to a King and a mother to a child is the completion. I also love that I  recognize and overstand my blessing and what I'm here to do and I'm moving in that.

ymib.com: What is your favorite affirmation or inspirational quote?

Soulflower: "I AM THAT I AM, I ALWAYS WAS, AND I WILL BE WHAT I WILL TO BE"

ymib.com: If you had to write a mission statement for your life what would it be?

Soulflower:  I'M HERE TO WORK ON BETTERING MYSELF IN THE HOPES OF ONE DAY RETURNING TO THE STATE I WAS BORN IN.  I'm here to raise my children and help keep them in the state they were born in.   I'm also here to do the works. To be a living example that love, light and consciousness exists even in Babylon and if it exists for one it exists for all.

ymib.com: What has been one of the most memorable moments/performances thus far and what goals would you like to accomplish within your career for the future?

Soulflower: My favorite performances thus far was The Bob Marley Anniversary in Miami. Over 10.000 people and it fealt like my voice was reaching the heavens. It was so beautiful. I also was beyond honored to go on tour with KRS ONE and rock with him on stage every show. The crowds were all so receptive and open to receiving truth. As a career goal I just want to be a part of uplifting people all over the world. I would love to help influence others to step out of the box and become more aware as people and as artists, especially within the hip-hop culture.

ymib.com: How does the current world look through the eyes of Soulflower?

Soulflower: The current world looks like a balance of love and war, saving and purging. There are to many lines and separation. The closer you come to the IAM and the overstanding of the ONENESS of ALL THINGS, the more you see that there really are no lines or separation. I overstand that this world was created by THE MOST HIGH,in love and being that all thing were created by THE MOST HIGH,in love, all things are divine and equally blessed. This world may need to go through these struggles and purges in order to return to being what once was.

All Hail The Empress!

http://www.myspace.com/soulflower777

Butterflytribess: Hey sis... how have you been?

Soulflower: Blessed, give thanks. I'm mixing this week and should be finished in the next couple. I'm itching for this album's completion.

Butterflytribess: Blessed it be! You ready for your INNERview?

Soulflower: I'm here and ready sis.

Butterflytribess: Aiight. So, basically, I need for you to share with me a story - Something life changing perhaps, or, something that shows where you get your inspiration from. We have already heard, and know about your music...

Soulflower: I got you. So you want me to just start flowing...

Butterflytribess: Yes, just start flowing sis. What does your soul have to say?

Soulflower: I have this track entitled "Empress". The hook explains in summary the evolution of the Empress and my story, which is, - Girl to a Sistren...Wife to a Woman...Mother to a Queen to an EMPRESS.

Butterflytribess: That's good.  Now, tell me HOW you've arrived to Empress? What's your evolutionary process been like?

Soulflower:  As far as my earthly roots in the music goes, my father's a jazz pianist, so I came up with jazz everywhere around me. I picked up the clarinet & sax around 8 years of age and began accompanying him on the horn and vocals - playing and singing old jazz standards at folks private parties, in their homes and in clubs. The jazz led me to writing the poetry around the same age, and the poetry led me to the hip-hop and the emceeing.

Butterflytribess: uh huh... that's the earthly, but there's something else at your core. What is that?

Soulflower:  I represent the "soul" and "soul music". In a genre of music that's been dominated by blasphemy, I'm constantly fueled to come with the love consciousness and the fire to wake this place up.

I represent the, "Empress Movement", in all humbleness. In this time there's no time to play. Our people have been brainwashed and we need to de-program and re-program them. That's my mission.

Butterflytribess: Who or what fuels you?

Soulflower: I'm fueled by LOVE from the Most High, which fills my soul and comes out through my movements and sound. I'm fueled by WAR which is the opposite of love, yet reminds me how necessary it is to be a warrior at all times.

Butterflytribess: So, you're a sistah soldier in the struggle?

Soulflower: A warrior of LOVE consciousness - but, I deal with the martial arts as well in order to defend mine, by any means though love rules all things we have to prepare for anything.

Butterflytribess: Yes.

Butterflytribess: Tell me more about the "Empress Movement" - is it a collective of sistah artist, or something you've personally, co-created with the Most High? What?  I am not familiar with the terminology...

Soulflower:  I used to have an organisation called, "Queendome". The Empress movement is the evolution of that. It's a conscious collective of sistren around the globe.

Butterflytribess: If other sistren (myself included) are interested in building with the "Queendome" and/or the "Empress Movement", what do they need to do?

Soulflower: Just stay connected for now. Once my web site comes forward again, it will be fully functioning.

Butterflytribess: What's your vision for a New World?

Soulflower: The New World is, "here" and "now". It's the life I'm living and you're living. We have to spread it the same way babylon spreads it - through action, through media, images, etc. The New World is a community that's safe enough for our children to be free and not on leashes. Where love rules ALL things... no question.

Butterflytribess: How did you come to this "knowingness"? Please share a personal story with me...

Soulflower: I came up knowing that I was special and had something special to give the world - as EVERYBODY does. I had to, in order to make it out of my childhood home alive. I went through a whole lot of mental and physical abuse coming up and was living with folks that didn't believe in the Most High,  and laughed at those that did.

They didn't show love or affection, and would fight ALL the time, it was crazy. I stayed out of that house as much as I could, and focused on sports and my music.

I've realized that you go in the same direction as those who raised you, or, you go in the opposite direction - and I've always moved in the EXTREME opposite direction, which would be a devotion and overstanding of the MOST HIGH "IN" I, and living in LOVE.

Soulflower: I realised my bless'in was to be a poet and emcee at age 12 - when I had my first emcee battle in the 7th grade and started taking stages.

One of the highest bless'inz and way of giving thanks, is to know what you're blessed to do. and to DO IT. I feel  one of the greatest sins is to overlook your bless'in..

Butterflytribess: So...do you feel that you are living in alignment with your life purpose? Or, should I say - your soul's purpose?

Soulflower:  Soul purpose and potential - exactly. No question!

Butterflytribess: Are you a mother?

Soulflower: Yes, Mother of a King and Queen.

Butterflytribess: How do you nuture their personal potential within them? How do you keep them free, or "unleashed" as you say?

Soulflower: I study them through feel'n. I feel out their highest bless'inz - what their soul purpose in this place is, and focus on, and nurture that.

Butterflytribess: Do they homeschool?

Soulflower: Yes, I keep them with me because I can't trust the energies of the world.  I have to constantly show them and tell them how blessed and loved they are - ALWAYS! HOW POWERFUL THEY ARE, AND REMIND THEM OF ALL THE GREAT THINGS THEY'RE DOING, AND HAVE TO DO HERE.

Butterflytribess: What a blessing.

Soulflower: No doubt.

Butterflytribess: So, I understand that you've worked with Erykah Badu...how did that come about?

Soulflower: We linked through having the same spiritual mother, Queen Afua. We just connected in the 1ness and began vibing and building. I've been blessed to have shared a few stages with her as well. She's such an evolved and beautiful Queen.

Butterflytribess: Sister Queen Afua? That's one of my spiritual mothers. lol.I'm not surprised...

Soulflower: 1ness is real.

Butterflytribess: I was just thinking "0" - as in cypher...

Soulflower: Seen.
Butterflytribess: Wow sis...So,  what do you want people to know/understand most about you?

Soulflower: It's all in the humbleness. I'm just here to remind them of their own divinity. How beautiful and powerful they all are - by movin in it, and showing and proving. I'm striving to infiltrate through hip-hop, because it's more than a music, it's like a New World religion, led by some real backwards and confused folks.

Hip-Hop needs new leadership, whether it be the I, or another. We have to build an army within it and take over the energy. The people have shown that they want a more uplifting and powerful message over and over again.

Hip-Hop is a massive, UNIVERSAL culture and through it, we can reshape the Universe.

Butterflytribess: That's powerful...

Soulflower: I've learned a lot through my own personal struggles. "Struggle IS the strengthening of soul".

Butterflytribess: We do need a new message - generated through hip-hop, and other music genres.

Soulflower: It's beyond essential.

Butterflytribess: The power is truly with the people.  If the people - flat out - refused to support music that DOESN'T heal, and uplift, then - those artist that are causing and perpetuating death, would be forced to do something different. We need to raise musical activist!

Butterflytribess: What's been your greatest struggle?

Soulflower: Within my spirit, it's been patience. I've been an emcee, longer, than most of these cats on the radio have been alive - for real. I've always felt ready to do this on the next level but the industry has always set limitations - especially within hip-hop. From skin tone, to gender, to message. I've just been awaiting for my divine time to shine - which I overstand is always now.

Butterflytribess: It is. The time is always NOW! We can't continue to wait on industry or its contract(s), to do this and that for us. We have to do for self, in all that there is. I thank Tom and myspace for this particular avenue.

Soulflower: It's a collective movement and I truly feel the change in the air and the shift It's happening.

Butterflytribess: This is powerful tool.

Soulflower: No DOUBT!

Butterflytribess: You have the opportunity to reach folks that you wouldn't necessarily be able to reach otherwise. You also have the opportunity to sell your own music, keeping the industry's "pimp" hands out of your pocket(s). lol

Soulflower: You just have to stay focused, and use the tools given wisely.
  .
Butterflytribess: No doubt about that. We must make a committment to SUPPORT and UPLIFT one another.

Soulflower: That's everybodies job - whether they know it or not.

Butterflytribess: Well, for those who do know - it's our job, to make sure, that those who don't - do.

Soulflower: Yes Queen.

Butterflytribess: You mentioned earlier that your album should be complete within the next few weeks - will this be your first album?

Soulflower: No, it's actually my 3rd.

Butterflytribess: Ok - I need to hear the others, and I am looking forward to this one.

Soulflower: Give thanks sis.

Butterflytribess: Well, it's been a blessing sis. This is only the beginning. Let's build!

Soulflower: Give thanks for that - the buildin' of the new nation, come on...

Butterflytribess: Every moment of every day! I don't have time for anything else. lol

Soulflower: I know you don't. I is I.

Butterflytribess: I'm a zombie warrioress. lol. Programmed!

Soulflower: Just stay OPEN...

Butterflytribess: Always - that's the only way to recieve the transmissions. I can't do that if I am closed.

Soulflower: The vail is bein lifted,TRUST.

Butterflytribess: Aiight... love, light, and flight - to you and your family sis!
  .
Soulflower: You as well beautiful Queen, give thanks for the love!

WHAT IS THE A.E.I.O.U. TOUR?

By Monique Ward
Special to The Truth

The "Artist Exchange Initiative out of the Underground" Tour was conceived from the idea that we (the artists) can share our talents with the help of others like us.

SoulFlower

It is a way to provide a means to share verbal expression in different parts of the U.S. without any expense to the artists. The A.E.I.O.U. chooses talented artists from different cities across the country and invites them to participate in a unique touring experience that showcases their art forms. It gives the artists an opportunity to receive more exposure and possibly reach new audiences.

In doing these tours we are able to raise funds for our non-profit organization, Alternative Directions Counseling & Wellness Center 501(c)3, which caters to helping families and the communities of Toledo, Ohio live healthy and more fulfilling lives. The message that this organization aspires to convey is a simple but often not an understood one, and that is that, "We are the artists who desire to be heard and we'll always find a way to share our thoughts with the world!"

What better way to make that possible than to work together as a collective body with same goal in mind?

As with any great idea, there has got to be teamwork in order to successfully see a constructive dream become a fruitful reality. What we need is steady cooperation and support from the communities that we come from.

Everything from mental to financial contributions will assist us in creating positive relationships like-minded artists all over the world. Please join us for our first fundraiser November 18, 2006 for our B.Y.O.B. Open-Mic Party.

International recording artist Soulflower

& poets from Toledo to New York City. Soulflower recently finished touring with Wu-Tang, KRS1, & Jurassic 5. You can check her out at www.myspace.com/soulflower777 to hear her song "Young Girl" which was the anthem for Macy's national back-to-school commercials.

HipHopExplosion2

Soulflower is also a hip-hop activist and had expressed delight at being able to come to Toledo specifically to help raise funds for Alternative Directions Counseling & Wellness Center's "Any Kid Can Program" so please let's show her some love, Glass City!

Universal Zulu Nation Calls Emergency Meeting to Recapture Hip-Hop

The Supreme World Council of the Universal Zulu Nation will hold an emergency meeting Feb. 22 to address what the group feels is an imbalance of
Hip-Hop played on radio and TV stations.

Expected to appear at the meeting to support the Universal Zulu Nation and founder Afrika Bambataa include Hip-Hop activists Kevin Powell, Davey D, Rosa Clemente and April Silver; rapper KRS-One; the Temple of Hip-Hop, educator and
filmmaker Martha Diaz; Public Enemy frontman Chuck D; photographer Ernie Paniccioli; Rock Steady Crew member Crazy Legs.

According to representatives for the Universal Zulu Nation, Bambaataa hopes steps will be taken to bring consciousness back to Hip-Hop.

"We are not saying to stop playing what you are playing on the air or showing on the TV, but to have balance and play it all, old-school to new-school to be true school," representatives for Bambaataa said in a statement.

The group hopes a plan of action will be devised to curtail "death and destruction playing on
radio and TV music video shows."

The coalition of artists and activists hope to stop being scared to expose "record labels, radio stations, TV Hip-Hop shows or whatever shows that show us in a BS vision of just being pimps, playas, gangsters and hoes, straight up niggers, wiggers or any other derogatory words that they use and we use to call ourselves."

The emergency meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the National Black Theater, 125th Street and Fifth Ave. in New York City

So, nearly 200 stations have been implicated by the New York
State Attorney General's office for payola violations. As I'm
sure you know, many are owned by the handful of radio
conglomerates that have risen to prominence since the industry
was deregulated in 1996.

This practice is dishonest, unrighteous and illegal. The airwaves belong to
the public, and since 1927, the federal government has required
broadcasters who use them to serve the public interest. This
e-mail is for a petition to get a thorough investigation into
all allegations of payola and hold the responsible parties
accountable.

Sign if you will, and please pass this on to others.

COMMERCIAL RADIO HAS BECOME A PLAGUE...

THIS IS A COLLECTIVE MOVEMENT!!!
