DALLAS, TX - GoGirlsMusicFest celebrates its 10th anniversary tour this year, and GoGirlsMusic.com founder Madalyn Sklar and her team have selected a new beneficiary of the event's proceeds - the nation's maternity homes including The Wesley Inn Program of Promise House in Dallas, TX.

The Dallas Event will be held on November 20 from 7:30-11:00 pm at Opening Bell Coffee (1409 South Lamar, Basement #012, Dallas) and will benefit The Wesley Inn Program of Promise House, a maternity home that guides 14- through 20-year-old homeless pregnant and parenting teen mothers to become healthy, independent and nurturing parents.

Music for the Dallas event will be provided by Cary Cooper, Merry and the Mood Swings, Chelsea Madrigal and Jackie Doss. Donations will be accepted and a silent auction will be held with items donated from a variety of local businesses and sponsors.
Admission is $10.00.

Following the launch, Sklar and her GoGirls Elite members will bring the best of independent women's music today to cities across the country, and work to educate their fans on the maternity homes that offer assistance to women in need at the most critical times in their lives. This year's GoGirlsMusicFest will reach San Francisco, CA; Austin, TX; Dallas, TX; Long Beach, CA; New York, NY; San Diego, CA; Santa Clarita, CA; Santa Monica, CA; Venice, CA and Washington DC.

Sklar and the staff of GoGirlsMusic.com carefully review different charities and causes as the planning for GoGirlsMusicFest gets underway. One cause is then selected that will benefit from event proceeds. "With everything that has shaken our economic stability this year," said Sklar, "we felt it was critical to offer our collective voices to those organizations that assist pregnant women with professional help, loving support, housing, and education during their pregnancies. More and more people are forgoing medical care during this tough economy; expectant mothers should not have to struggle to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies."

"Everyone here at GoGirls is excited to be working to increase awareness of maternity homes throughout the country," says Sklar. "Maternity homes have played such a key role in the lives of so many people, yet there are fewer and fewer of them every year, and the ones that survive often have very long waiting lists. Leveraging the GoGirlsMusicFest to help spread the word about important issues and causes is something I'm proud that we're able to do. We're thrilled to reach out to these organizations, and work with them and their clients as we hold our events around the country."

National GoGirlsMusicFest Coordinator, Evonne Rivera adds, "Most of these homes are run independently, without the help of a national organization. It fits perfectly with our independent artists helping independent charities."

About GoGirlsMusicFest

Madalyn Sklar, founder of GoGirlsMusic.com, created GoGirlsMusicFest, a series of annual showcase events across the United States. The festival promotes independent women in music while supporting various charities which have included MusiCares, Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, American Liver Foundation, The Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research, UNOS and more. Since 2000, well over 100 all volunteer run shows have taken place throughout the U.S. Additional info at www.gogirlsmusicfest.com

About GoGirlsMusic.com
GoGirls is a unique organization that focuses on advancing the careers of independent female artists. Founded in early 1996, the organization works tirelessly to help artists through education, networking, and events like the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls @ SXSW, Folk Alliance and more. Artists who become involved have the opportunity to perform, have their work reviewed, and get involved with a hardworking group of women who "get things done" in the music scene.

About The Wesley Inn Program of Promise House

The Wesley Inn Program of Promise House guides 14- through 20-year-old homeless pregnant and parenting teen mothers to become healthy, independent and nurturing parents. As a group residence for homeless teen mothers and their children, the Wesley Inn Program provides a safe residence for up to 12 moms and babies. Residents may stay in the program for up to two years and are encouraged to stay at least 90 days. During this time, each resident and her child benefit from a wide range of services and training opportunities.

Hello Dallas GoGirls Members and Friends,

I hate to let a whole year go by before we get together again!  Let's meet up at the Bandmates and Mojo Dolls gig on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Lakewood Bar and Grill.  Come early so we can chat about what everyone is up to before the music starts at 9:00 PM.  The Lakewood has good hamburgers  and veggie burgers in case you don't have time to have dinner before.

This is an informal gathering, so if you want to bring a friend please do!  You do NOT have to be a GoGirls member to come.  If you have friends who are interested in joining GoGirls this would be a great time to bring them along so they can meet some of the members.

Please let me know if you can be there!  I'm really looking forward to hanging with you all and catching up on what you've been doing.

Hugs,
Mary

Darryl Smyers posted this item about the Dallas GoGirlsMusicFest today in the Dallas Observer's Music Blog.  You can read it here or you can read it on the Observer website: Dallas Observer Music Blog

Seems GoGirl Music Fest Doesn't Hate Men As Much As Other Female-Centric Festivals

thebright.jpg
The Bright will be there, male members be damned.

A couple of months back, I told you about Mary Hestand from Merry & the Mood Swings organizing a series of concerts at the Dallas Women's Museum.

As you may recall, the museum told Hestand that all acts had to be female–no male band members, period. So Hestand busted her ass searching high and low for area female singers and all-female bands to fill the bill. She succeeded in that case and now has a more manageable task: Coordinating the 2008 GoGirls Music Fest to take place November 8 at Opening Bell Coffee.

"GoGirls is boy friendly," Hestand says, "which means bands like The Bright and Rocket Girl can play with their male members."

Hestand says that the Fest will feature a transgendered performer, but, sadly, She Dick, the drag queen, electropop outfit won't be performing.

"They don't have a female member," explains Hestand.

Besides the acts mentioned above, soulful R&B songstress Rhonda Nicole and eight other acts will complete the line up. A $5 cover charge and proceeds from a silent auction will benefit the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the charity selected this year to benefit from GoGirlsMusicFests across the country.

Nice to know that the guys can take part in this worthwhile effort. –Darryl Smyers

Attention all GoGirls Elite Members!

The annual GoGirls MusicFest is coming up fast – Saturday, November
8
, at Opening Bell Coffee and Music in Dallas.  Artists wishing to
perform at this year's Fest need to reply right away!  Performance
slots will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.  (Remember,
you must be a GoGirls Elite member to participate – another great
reason to renew your membership!)

This year the GoGirls MusicFest benefits United Network for Organ
Sharing
(UNOS). UNOS brings together medicine, science, public policy
and technology to facilitate every organ transplant performed in the
United States. Every day, UNOS assists transplant doctors, patients,
and members of the public by helping to ensure that organs are procured
and distributed in a fair and timely manner.

As in past years, each artist is asked to donate an item to the Silent
Auction, with all proceeds to benefit UNOS.  Gift baskets,
complimentary hair styling, spa visits, restaurant vouchers –  anything
the public would love to win all in support of a wonderful cause.  Of
course, your CDs, T's, and other artist merchandise are always welcome
to round out your donated item.

If you would like to perform, email right away to:
maryhestand@sbcglobal.net or message Merry & the Mood Swings under Top Friends below.

Looking forward to seeing you onstage and in the audience at this year's GoGirls Music Fest!

Attention Dallas GoGirls Members!

Want to get involved in the local music scene and with GoGirls in
particular? Committee members are needed to help with this year's
GoGirls MusicFest, scheduled for Saturday, November 8 in Dallas.  The
time frame is between now and November 8. Various committee
members are needed:

Want to get closer to the media? – Enthusiastic promoter-types are
needed who are willing to write, send out and follow up on press
releases to local media.

Want to network and get to know your fellow GoGirl musicians better?
-- Help is needed the day of the event getting artists signed in,
instruments stored and watched over, and overall helping/hostessing of
the event.

Great at retail or merchandise?  Help is needed coordinating the Silent
Auction before the event, and running the Silent Auction on the day of
the festival – this would be a great project to do with a friend!

Have a jones for running sound?  Be sound manager for the event and
help each act get their sound levels right-on on the Opening Bell sound
system.

To get right in the middle of the exciting activities, email right away
to:  maryhestand@sbcglobal.net or message Merry & the Mood Swings under the Dallas GGMF Top Friends.

It's taken me forever to write my latest comment for a couple of reasons…

1) I was pretty tired when I got back to LA. If you saw me at the Dallas show you know I was running on pure adrenaline (it ran out yesterday!!)  and 2) I was very happy and sad at the same time. SO happy with seeing everyone and how amazingly well the show went and yet sad to leave my friends and Dallas behind. So I slept. I'm ready to ROCK the Long Beach and LA GoGirlsMusicFests this week, but wanted to give you a recap:

Thank you to the following people without which we would not have had such a wonderful show:

Madalyn: for GoGirlsMusic – You ROCK!!!

Pascale & staff: for the wonderful venue of Opening Bell Coffee

Scott and Ken: for the beautiful sound

Scott and Dick: for the amazing video with sound that is forthcoming!

Dick: for the photos forthcoming (I've seen a few already!! Brilliant!)

Barry: for running the front door almost all night!!! THANK YOU!

Lisa and Ken: for setting up – otherwise I would STILL be in my Daisy Rock sweats!

Operation Kindness: for being our inspiration and the beautiful donations! (and the wonder friendly volunteers!)

The Artists: Leah Marr, Jana Pochop, Cynthia Bennett, Julie Pham, Annie Benjamin, Bastet, Ruby Rendrag, Merry and the Mood Swings, Rhonda Nicole for donating their time, their amazing performances and the generous donations they were able to secure to help make the Auction and Raffle so successful and fun!

Our Sponsors: Daisy Rock Guitars; Couch Vegan Guitar Straps/Belts; Dave Cool/What is Indie; Vetraceuticals; Chad Dingham of Anderson, Cox & Company the Salon at Stanley Korshak; Special Care Pet Sitting; Kimberly and Susan of the Bandmates; Amber Richardson of Lifestyle Portrait; Kathy Sahagian; Zoey March; Dick Roth; Cotton Patch Café; CD Source; Merry and the Mood Swings; and Tropical Day Spa for their generous contributions to our Auction and Raffle. (if I missed someone I apologize!)
The Auction Participants: for making the auction a success and so much fun -YOU ROCK!

The Audience: for giving each artist such a wonderful, supportive ear and raucous applause! YOU ROCK!

The event was a great success by all measure. I am thrilled with every second of the night!

Did I leave anyone out?? I might have and if so I am terribly sorry. I am overwhelmed by the support and generosity of each and every one of you.

I received a wonderful email from Bryan from Operation Kindness today. The only thing I ask of you is that you remember Operation Kindness and GoGirlsMusic as you move forward in your daily lives.

In typical Dallas Observer style they missed the point entirely…

It took a move to Los Angeles to get an article about an event I'm doing this weekend at Opening Bell Coffee for Operation Kindness.

Instead of actually writing ABOUT the benefit (we are raising money for Operation Kindness – the largest No Kill Animal Shelter in North Texas) and discussing the wonderful 10 female fronted bands playing, the great auction items, and the hard work put into organizing an event like this from the west coast, Jonanna instead chose to focus her article on criticizing the founder of GoGirlsMusic and the web coaching seminars she offers online.  How this is relevant to the event I'm not sure.  Please read on and make a comment. I would appreciate your support and hope to see you at the event. It's just $5 and the parking is FREE!
