* * *
Part 1: "Happiness Machines"
Meet Sigmund Freud's nephew Edward Bernays and his groundbreaking ideas on crowd control. Bernays invents public relations in the 1920s by using Freud's theories to influence people. He shows corporations how they can make people want things they don't need.
Part 2: "The Engineering of Consent"
The theories of Edward Bernays and Anna Freud gain power after WWII. Bernays is hired by the CIA to use advertising techniques to sell the overthrow of Latin American countries. Anna Freud is hired to start a national mental health program based on conformity.
Part 3: "There Is a Policeman Inside All Our Heads: He Must Be Destroyed"
In the 1960s, transformation is in the air. But when people realize they can't change government through protest, they retreat to changing themselves. For corporations, this becomes another opportunity. They develop lifestyle marketing and convince people they can express their individuality through buying things, leading to the creation of the "Me" generation.
Part 4: "Eight People Sipping Wine in Kettering"
Starting with Ronald Reagan, contemporary politicians adopt lifestyle marketing techniques. Later, Bill Clinton perfects the use of the focus group which lets the whims of target voters determine national policy.
