Artist: Arden of Eden

CD: Love Street

Home: Los Angeles, California

Style: Indie Pop

Quote: "This artist has the concept of vocal dynamics down pat."
By Rachel Sedacca

After three releases under her belt, Mary Arden Collins manifests her gifts as Arden of Eden in the most recent 4th release Love Street. Reminiscent of some of the hottest pop artists of the past decade, listening to it made me think Pink, Alanis Morrisette, Jewel and Avril Lavigne. I was impressed with the production value on this album; it's obvious she has some heavy hitters in her corner. A top shelf vocalist, Mary exhibits great voice control and versatility. This artist has the concept of vocal dynamics down pat.

Her poetry puts a clever spin into each and every song, telling us she is using her degree in English to make a mark on the world. Sometimes dark, sometimes bubbling, this album has great balance and something to offer in every track.

"Someday" has a haunting quality to it, and Cameron Stone’s cello fits in perfectly with the feeling of mystery and hope in this song of unrequited love. "Misting in my cereal, choking on your stereo" evoking images known to those who have suffered a broken heart. "Mississippi" is a sultry and sexy track touching the blues and pulling away in a strut. There's the unmistakable sound of Keb’ Mo on shiny national guitar.

Mary covers a Richard Thompson song made famous by one of my very favorite artists, the incredible Bonnie Raitt. This can sometimes be scary, but Mary has assured me after the first few bars that she has the chops to pull it off. A real test of vocal range and guts, "Dimming of the Day" is excellent, a great job done on a very tall order, if you ask me.

I guess I often comment on music with the visions it stirs in my head. "The Light" brought visions of a belly dance troupe to mind with the intricate rhythms leading us into the song with a multi-layered dose of percussion. Some of the vocal work sounds as if it’s a recording of an ancient chant. Is it an artifact? No, it’s fresh, funky and bohemian.

Mary Arden Collins hits it out of the park with this project and first release under the new name. Love Street delivers the whole package with a fine job on the hard copy album artwork, complete with lyrics. With the talents of Mark Gorman and Cameron Stone to back her up with solidity, Mary’s hard work is getting her somewhere, obvious from this body of music.

MERRY HOLIDAYS to all! It's the end of another year and so much has happened, personally & globally. We thank you so much for your love and support on our musical journey! The release of our first official ARDEN of EDEN album Love Street, was a dream come true!

ONE LAST CHANCE: I know many of us have felt the effects of the economy lately, but there are always others who have it worse. We have one last chance to make donations, in the 2008 tax year, to charities that help those who are in need of basic food and shelter. I recently got an email from a fan who volunteers at the Sunday Breakfast Mission, describing how the food lines have been growing and the amount of supplies has been shrinking. Anything donated, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated: http://www.sundaybreakfastmission.org/about_us.htm.

NEW YEAR'S EVE: Mark and I will be doing an acoustic performance for FIRST NIGHT WILMINGTON in my homestate of Delaware. It's early, fun and family friendly. We play from 8-9PM at the Bank of America Lobby (11th & King Sts). There are many cool activities, including fireworks at 10pm! For more info, go to: www.delawareonline.com/firstnight .

May 2009 be an amazing year of love, hope and prosperity for all!!!

Peace, Love & Music,

Mary Arden Collins & Mark Gorman

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to? What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama was a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"? What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and maximizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference. - Kelvin , Fort Worth"

"If you're a minority and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a "token hire."

If you're a conservative and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a "game changer."

Black teen pregnancies? A "crisis" in black America.
White teen pregnancies? A "blessed event."

If you grow up in Hawaii you're "exotic."
Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you're the quintessential "American story."

Similarly, if you name your kid Barack you're "unpatriotic."
Name your kid Track, you're "colorful."

If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're "reckless."
A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a "maverick."

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer growing your organization from a staff of 1 to 13 and your budget from $70,000 to $400,000, then become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new African Amerian voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, then spend nearly 8 more year s as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, becoming chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, then spend nearly 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of nearly 13 million people, sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you are woefully inexperienced.

If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, then you've got the most executive experience of anyone on either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska military and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is the closest state to Russia.

If you are a Democratic male candidate who is popular with millions of people you are an "arrogant celebrity".
If you are a popular Republican female candidate you are "energizing the base".

If you are a younger male candidate who thinks for himself and makes his own decisions you are "presumptuous".
If you are an older male candidate who makes last minute decisions you refuse to explain, you are a "shoot from the hip" maverick.

If you are a candidate with a Harvard law degree you are "an elitist-out of touch" with the real America.
If you are a legacy (dad and granddad were admirals) graduate of Annapolis, with multiple disciplinary infractions you are a hero.

If you manage a multi-million dollar nationwide campaign, you are an "empty suit".
If you are a part time mayor of a town of 7000 people, you are an "experienced executive".

If you go to a south side Chicago church, your beliefs are "extremist".
If you believe in creationism and don't believe global warming is man made, you are "strongly principled".

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
If you have been married to the same woman with whom you've been wed to for 19 years and raising 2 beautiful daughters with, you're "risky".

If you're a 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton, the right-wing press calls you "First dog."
If you're a 17-year old pregnant unwed daughter of a Republican, the right-wing press calls you "beautiful" and "courageous."

While not a good name for a Music Publication, The Biggest Letdown posted a unique review of "Love Street" (though I think the deer would dig the music too). Here is an excerpt...

Monday, 29 September 2008

This album showed up at the BIGGEST LETDOWN OFFICE a little while back, and it waited very patiently for a kind review. ARDEN OF EDEN is Mary Arden Collins. Her band is composed of Mark Gorman, Cameron Stone and Dave Allen. I can definitely close my eyes and hear these songs on the radio or on popular TV shows. It's very commercially produced. That's a good thing.

Arden of Eden's music is a combination of indie and pop. On this album, there's a few songs that really stick out. Namely FREE, MAGIC CHILD, and ONE MORE DAY. Those are some catchy songs. Alright, I like this album. It's the kind of music you can listen to while you're driving around town, getting your daily chores done. It's also an album you can listen to while doing your laundry. Do NOT listen to this album when you are hunting deer in the woods, though. They will get scared off and you will never catch them.
